My sister and I had a chat before and de-escalated things and mom had wine and talked about our trip.

    No popcorn required.

And the place smelled great so it was quite calming.

Nice spicy bbq rub on the bird was amazing.

The idea that anyone expects or demands an inheritance is staggering for me.

My dad lightly broached the subject a while back to tell me how they planned to split things up, and I told him I hoped every red cent he had went towards making every year of his life better.

I’ll cut my sister a bit of a break due to the financial impact of her MS, and her concerns around being able to afford her treatments as she gets older and is retired.

Still, though, completely fucked up way to broach and discuss the topic.

My wife's grandfather is 95 and made a lot of money in life. His children are circling his estate like vultures. It's ugly.

I told my parents the same thing. Forget leaving us something and go see the world while you can.

Similar situation with my wife's grandmother. My wife's brother (who is the richest rich who ever riched a rich, by the way) always mentions, every time the topic of their grandmother comes up, of how he's getting so much money when she dies but don't worry he'll share some with us "hurr hurr hurr". He's such an ass. He also refuses to go visit her (she's 93) because she doesn't send presents to his kids so why should he bother. Also, he's always the first to point out how important family is and how family always needs to be there for each other.

As I slowly assemble the puzzle pieces of what retirement will look like for my wife and I, I don't factor in getting anything from relatives. Realistically, how can I? Yeah my dad probably has millions stashed, to say nothing of my wife's parents and her grandmother, but who know how that'll play out. What if they have major health issues that pop? What if they need to go into some super expensive assisted living facility? How do you plan around question marks? They way I figure it, my wife and I (barring some crazy situations) should have a really comfortable retirement on what we will likely have and anything else will be a nice bonus. Our folks worked their asses off for their money. *They* should enjoy it.

How does this work in Canada? I thought essential healthcare was covered - are these optional treatments?

That's one of the big reasons why I think trying to plan on an inheritance is unreasonable. There is such a wide array of end-of-life outcomes. Two (extended) family members have needed memory care at the end of their lives, and burned through all of their money. And you know what? It's great that they had the money because they got much better care.

Yeah, she’s in a few experimental programs that her work covers (government employee) that wouldn’t be covered otherwise.

Given your sister's situation I think asking is reasonable, but what you described is an example how not to.

Yeah... mom kind of changed her interpretation a bit after I pointed out that she very well may outlive her daughter.

I saw the greatest thing at a haunted house last night. This girl in a costume similar to Harley Quinn, but with much more gore, tried to scare my kid by jumping out of some dense fog. He didn't get scared. She turned and walked up the path to sneak up on people in front of us. Kid said, "she isn't scary." This girl is a contortionist and folds herself completely backwards and screams, "you sure about that!?", while still walking down the path. It was so unexpected, it made both of us jump.

    Ouch.

Sounds like the conversation should be less, "what are you going to leave me when you die?" and more, "I need financial help, can you help me?"

Touch situation regardless, hope everything gets resolved peacefully.

I know you are all deeply invested. I have made direct contact with a pig farm in the western part of the state and will be acquiring the fat I require.

I think it’s more that her new financial planner asked her how much she might inherit and rather than go with “nothing” she outright asked mom without any context.

End result is a trip to the lawyer’s office on Thursday to remove her as an executor.

Other than that it’s all good now.

Hopefully you aren't required to kill the pig yourself.

No, but I do have to name it and spend time with it first.

I read that story, it didn’t end well for the quiet kid. Or the nerdy one.
