A thread to talk about any and all things related to the Olympics. EDIT: I never go to the sports board anymore because all the spam makes reading it impossible. My mistake for the doubled up thread...but in case anyone else also doesn't go there, here you go.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi I think there are going to be an inordinate amount of injuries this go. I remember when the Georgian skeleton dude wrapped himself around the track last time. But this time, it seems to be done with less attention to detail and safety. I read that Shawn White backed out of a certain event because he felt it was too dangerous. Either way, because this is mother Russia, nothing really surprises me.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi The games have already been a PR disaster for Russia. Instead of demonstrating how great Putins Russia is, its exposing how terrible it is. Its exhibiting quite clearly the level of corruption and outright theft that occurs there. Remember this is somehow the most expensive olympic games in history, and yet there isn't clean water, there is laughable rooms that aren't even duct taped together, and there's a massive security concern. Shaun White pulled out because the last jump was a 60ft kicker. Insane. I don't know if many people on here can fathom what that means.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi I'm enjoying the tweets from Russia. Some of my favorites:
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi Pooping aka dropping a deuce aka taking a dump aka taking the Browns to the Super Bowl is an Olympic event there. Those are the judges' chairs.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi Russia is a terrifying place. Despite all the money being thrown around, I can't fathom the discussions the Olympic committee had in determining to hold them in Sochi. It just screams BAD IDEA.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi The only thing the IOC knew when they granted the Russians the Games was that they had a nice pay day coming their way.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi Or a former KGB wet boy wouldn't knock on their door some night.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi Since Eussian officials and judges are also the worst and most corrupt in Olympic history, we can look forward to our countries getting the shaft a lot in scoring events.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi One of the things I like about this board is I learn numerous ways to describe bowel movements. Wait, did I just say I like describing bowel movements? What is wrong with me? And I thought Shaun White hurt his wrist and that's why he withdrew from the one event. So he could just focus on the other one he does. You can tell I'm well-versed in the snowboarding events as I don't even know what they are called.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi He said his wrist injury wasn't too bad. So while he's saying thats the reason he withdrew, its more likely because the slope style course is flat out dangerous and he doesn't want to risk getting a catastrophic injury.
Did the Russians steal the "m"? The events are called That One With the Thing and The One With All Those Things (or Halfpipe and Slopestyle). There are a couple other boarders complaining that he dropped out because he knew he wouldn't medal - that he should've dropped out before the Olympics so they could have a chance. I don't know all the details, but they sounded like whiny children to me. Shaun White has shown a history of being a tough competitor, and in addition to his impressive Olympic Medals, has won medals in Winter and Summer X Games. I give him the benefit of the doubt. If you want to go as an Olympian, then finish better than 5th next time.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi One of the downhill runs was insanely dangerous as well. An American came down her run, hit the last jump (mind you its not snowboarding, you dont want jumps in downhill skiing, but they happen due to speed) and she immediately said the last jump was trouble. The next 3 skiers all hurt themselves, some pretty bad, and they had to shave down a jump. I mean, get your shit together. Deadspin just showed Zdano Chara's "extended bed" that his hotel provided, which was basically an ottoman at the foot of his laughable twin bed. This is all a disgrace. I think my favorite part is after all the buzz around stray dog extermination, they are becoming a major storyline in hilarious fashion. From the one barking at cross country skiers on the trail to the picture I saw this morning of a dog that wandered into the concourse at the opening ceremonies. Can't hold them down!
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi In the past Olympics, there was always talk of all the sex that goes on in the Olympic Village. Apparently they would provide tons of condoms for the athletes (tons!). I just picture everyone being deprived of their sexy times as they'll be anxious to go home. That's just not right. Rush, you just sound so...manly. All right.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi In case anyone is wondering, Chara is a 6'9 hockey player representing Slovakia. This is the bed they gave him. He may be better off trying to buy his own mattress and have it delivered than trying to sleep like that. I know we have some freakishly tall people on here, a few of you must sympathize with this.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi Don't forget about if they stand up or sit down to wipe.
Re: 2014 Olypics Thread: Fingers Crossed, Sochi Standing? Instantly disqualified. Even the freaks in Roosha would ask him what is wrong with him. I've already learned from a board member I've been pooping wrong my entire life, so standing up to smear it even more would be tantamount a belly flop in diving.
