As Facebook or Instagram surely informed you, today is Back to the Future Day or something. For the sadly uninformed, that is the day that the main characters Marty McFly and Doc Brown arrived 30 years into the future from October 21, 1985 (in Back to the Future 2) to help his family and fuck up the past with a sports almanac. If you haven't seen the films, you are an incomplete person and you should go watch them. For the rest of us, now that the day is here, obviously the predictions in the movie havent come to pass. Theres no hoverboards, flying cars, retrofuturism based on the 1980s, or Nike high-tops with power laces. Focus: The Back to the Future movies and how great they are (or shitty, if you dont like them). Alt Focus: For those us that are old enough, waht did you think 2015 was going to be like after you saw the movie? Alt. Alt. Focus: What will life be like 30 years from now?
I think at the time I was mostly just thought it was bizarre to imagine what my life would be like at 42. When you think about it, if the technology of today had been included in the movie, I probably would have thought it was more full of shit than microwaves that turn tiny pizzas into normal size. Smart phones and tablets would have literally been considered only in the realm of Star Trek the Next Generation.
The first movie was a classic, the second seemed way goofier but was ok, and I didn't even bother watching the third one. I was 18 when the movie came out, and at 18 I didn't think very much about 30 years into the future. Getting laid pretty much dominated my concerns for my future activities. At the time, I didn't take the movie seriously as a representation of what 2015 would be. Skateboarding, in 2015? Get real. Skateboarding is a fad . . . . . . One that has now been around for 40+ years, so I was wrong about that. But I didn't expect hoverboards, so I nailed that one. And the Cubs aren't winning the World Series this year.
The third BTTF is the best of the three, a true "Movie Magic" film. Cool Things in BTTF 2: -Hoverboards (we're not even CLOSE yet) - "Mr. Fusion" -Hydrating ovens -descending fruit gardens in kitchen -power laces -self-drying jackets -cool-looking Pepsi thermos -dog-walking drones -Organ/youth rejuvenation NOT cool things in BRTF2: -Wearing two ties at once(most of the fashion is hilarious and ridiculous) -Flying cars. We can't even drive golf carts without killing ourselves. We'd all be dead within hours. -Dot Matrix printers. I haven't used one since 1993. -"Jaws 19" -Upside-down thereputic hover belts
Yeah I really like the 3rd one. It's hard to put any of them down, I probably like watching number 2 the best but I still think it is the weaker of the films.
Agreed. The first half of part II was fun (especially back when it was considered state-of-the-art) but the second half killed the gee-whiz innocence of the first with that cruel and sleazy alternate reality 1985 sequence. The metafilm-style climax mirroring part 1 was really cool, though. Anybody notice Elizabeth Shue is the girlfriend in part 2 and 3 (which were shot together as one) and not the original?
Of course, the original chick went to do modeling or something, so they had to completely reshoot a few scenes. I think I like 2 the best, specifically because of the bizarro 1985 sequence.
Yeah I thought the alternate 1985 was fun. Who doesn't think of becoming biff gambling with the sports almanac every time they bet on games?
Agreed. It's just a fun sequence because you have to imagine how fucking bonkers shit must have gotten with Biff for things to get that bad.
Im seriously surprised at how many companies have had marketing material for this "event." Parker did one add agency handle all these products or something? Nike, Pepsi, Toyota, all had something commemorating it.
Cracked.com has a shitload of articles about this franchise today; I recommend that the fans check it out. They even changed their normal font for the article headlines.
I recall in my childhood I must have seen all three of the films, along with the original Jurassic Park and Jaws, a couple hundred times apiece. I especially like Back to the Future Part III.
This is my favorite movie of all time, and I really liked the complexity of II and the converging timelines. Flawlessly written. III is an excellent film in it's own right, and caps off the series nicely.
I've seen parts of the one with the sports almanac, but that's it. Guess I have some catching up to do(in a related matter, Amazon Prime is awesome).
