FUCK YOU JOHN CARNEY. This old cunt just cost me $50. All he had to do was slot that easy field goal and my aggregate points bet would have panned out. FUCK.

Indeed. So if we're really lucky this year we might get a match up of WHO DAT? vs. WHO DEY? in the Superbowl.

Still recovering from another Pats loss. Two things I noticed during the game. 1) Wes Welker is amazing, but complaining about a call while the pass is in the air to you? Who do you play for, the Colts? 2) Watched the game in a college bar in Providence and was very surprised at the amount of cheers I heard for the Saints. There's no way that my school has more than three kids from Louisiana, I'm guessing the rest of the Saints' supporters were bitter Jets fans who needed something to celebrate? Either way, it was a bit confusing.

The problem is that you're so quick to write both of these teams off. You sound like a bit of a band wagoner, and while I'm not going to give you shit for that I'd like to note a couple things. The texans played the colts with equal intensity relative to the titans. Is that game worth less just because of Indianapolis' record? It hasn't been very long since the giants beat the patriots and the 6th seed steelers crushed the seahawks in the super bowl. In some ways football requires a short memory. Like you're insinuating in your post, the titans slumped to 0-6 and have been 5-0 since. The record isn't impressive, but their recent performance is. The concept of 'any given sunday' is what makes this league great. Limiting title contention to just 4-5 teams in ridiculous. History defends that point.

That being said, the saints have established themselves as the team to beat. When they blew out the giants people weren't convinced because it was early in the season, and they had fallen apart afterwards. Tonight, they embarrassed Brady and Brees had a perfect passer rating. I wonder if they'll be as effective against the run if they have to go against AP.

For my money the best part of tonight's game was seeing the incredulous look on Belichick's face.

I'm not a band wagoner, I'm an eagles fan. (sigh) I'm also married with kids, so I can't sit and watch every game on sunday. What I try to do is watch the eagles (I know, I know) and what I feel is the best game of the week. Titans vs. Texans not the best game of the week, while it may have been a great competitive game I'd be suprised if we see either team in the post season. I think you made my point in your argument "for" the texans, intensity did not close out that game, The colts were the better team period. I doubt any of the premire teams would have squandred that lead.

Anyway how about the saints?? I knew they could win, I didn't think they would own the saints like that.

So who loses first saints or colts?

Answer was obvious last week. Patriots were clearly the best team left on either teams schedule. Now both teams have a pretty mediocre to weak schedule.

Colts: Titans, Broncos, @Jags, Jets, @Bills

    Saints: @Redskins, @Falcons, Cowboys, Bucs, @Panthers

If this was college FB and going undefeated meant something I'd say the Colts by a tiny margin just for homerism's sake, but the Colts have already started taking the foot off the gas (Dwight Freeney could have played, but they wanted him to get healthy more than they wanted to win Sunday) and with a 3 game lead for the 1 seed they aren't in serious danger of being caught. The Saints have the Vikings trailing a game behind them which will keep them playing for homefield.

How have the Saints changed their game up this year? I was talking (more like excitedly yelling) with my brother after the game last night, and we both came up with these two main points: a) MUCH better running game now that they finally let the deuce loose (I loved him though), and are using the bell/thomas tandem.
b)defense stepped it up--this we weren't sure of how though. They had a GREAT secondary post-Katrina, then it sucked, now it's good again. What gives??

Any input on this would be great, I am fascinated on how this team is so different from last year. Also, it is going to be hard for them to not lose during the season as Chater said, basically for his reasons (panthers and falcons still on the schedule--they will be tougher games than you think).

The teams with the best offensive lines in the game are usually the best teams - Saints, Vikings, Colts. If the quarterback has time, he will be accurate for the most part, and Brees is the most accurate quarterback in the league right now. Plus, most of the receivers are taller than average, and faster than average so they get a lot of yards after the catch (it also helps that Brees hits them in stride). That's what I've been noticing.

The Colts OL is better than last years (because they're healthy) but it's one of the teams weaker units, or at least it houses some of the weakest links. Jeff Saturday and Ryan Lilja are excellent at Center and Left Guard, but they benched their starting RG, Mike Pollak, after he gave up 3 sacks while splitting time in the Niners game and now have a guy who last played football in AFL2 starting there. Charlie Johnson has been a surprise at LT, but he's probably still better off as a RT. For all the attention on Marvin Harrison's decline last year I still the RT Ryan Diem was the most washed up player on that Colts O. Peyton helps that line out a ton with his quick reads and release and the line certainly doesn't do the RBs any favors.

I'm just hoping the line holds together for this year until they can bring in a real LT in the draft and shuffle some guys into places they are better suited for (Diem to RG, Johnson to RT).

Also, you touched on this a bit earlier, but it can't be stressed enough how important the addition of a competent running game is to the success of the team. It helps do a couple of things:

    1) Wear down opposing defenses
    2) Control the clock
    3) Keeps the defense honest, which opens up the passing game (even more)

The last one especially. Teams last year would rush 4-5 people every down, and leave most of their players back in coverage. Now, they have to keep more people in the box than before in order to try and stop the run, which creates more 1-on-1 matches in the secondary. Keep in mind- Brees put up record numbers when he was throwing into more coverage last year. If you give him the openings he has been getting this year, they are going to do just what they have been doing- score a buttload of points.

Another thing, I don't know the numbers off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure that the Saints are like +12 in turnovers this year. In years past, they had been in the negative. That has been the biggest improvement in the defense this year(along with the elevated play by the d-line and secondary)- they have been creating turnovers.

I agree with Chater about the level of the Saints' play in relation to the talent of their opponents, and I actually had the same conversation with my brother about it last night. They definitely sometimes play to the level of their competition, which is a double edged sword. On one hand, you see them beat the shit out of a perennial powerhouse like the Patriots, but the next week, they will struggle against the Rams. And THAT'S the big thing I am worried about down the stretch. Its not the Vikings or the Colts that scare me- its Washington and Tampa. That and injuries.

Hey, no point in worrying about injuries, if it happens, shit, it happens.
I fear for their playoff ability because of your last point. If they play down to a lower seed, it's going to hurt them. You don't want to have your starters out there for 100% of the playoffs--it's been a long season already. That being said, I think they are going to be strong contenders.

This. Or Who Dey!? for the Bengals. I know these are the rallying calls, but I don't know their origins.
Fans of the teams who spawned these calls will get negative rep points if they don't know, or answer too slow.

I'm looking at you, Chater and BlueDog...

After spending four years up in Providence I can assure you that by the end of any given season, New England fans had done a pretty good job of turning everyone from outside the area against the Patriots. Add that to the fact that the Saints are a fun team to watch with a likable story what they've gone through with Katrina, and all you're left with is anyone from within 90 minutes of Boston, the Tom Brady "But he's cute!!" Pink Jersey Brigade, and this guy.

Out of curiosity, where were you watching the game?

I didn't know the history of the chant - that's a fun fact though, that the Saints' cheer has racist origins - but the Wikipedia article somehow neglects to mention what it actually means.

"WHO DAT? WHO DAT SAY DEY GONNA BEAT DEM SAINTS??" roughly translates to "Who is that publicly declaring his/her intentions of defeating our home team, the New Orleans Saints? I repeat, who is it that dares purpose to intend such a declaration?"

The most important part of a football chant, of course, is how fun it is to yell with a giant group of rabid fans while shithoused - and Who Dat passes that test with flying colors.
