Listen to segment 6. LaVar breaks it down for all you namby-pamby, "I'm buying into the media's slow news day," NFL hits are too hard bull-shit. This whole discussion is bull shit. Oh, this is pretty awesome too. Go watch soccer if you don't like it.
Then let him get the fucking reception. Tackle him when he hits the tip of his toe hits the ground and prevent him going an inch further. The worst hit I've ever taken was when I caught a kick. I turned my back and jumped up to catch it like we're taught. One of the opposing players took a 10 meter running start and cleanly put his shoulder into the small of my back the instant my foot hit the ground. It took me a long time to be able to walk right after that and an even longer time before I was able to confidently catch a kick again. The bottom line is that you don't have to use your head, you don't have to hit them in the air, and you can use your shoulder to properly and safely hurt someone.
Pretty much my thoughts. You realize what you're suggesting would ruin the game right? If a player isn't willing to take the risks they need to find another sport. Besides, covering a player is probably the most difficult part of the game. The refs are already too flag happy on late hits and pass interference. Handicapping the defense further would favor the offense too much. Seeing defenders charge a player, stop, and then make a tackle would be really fucking lame. Can you imagine watching your team give up a last minute touchdown reception because they didn't want to hurt the receiver?
Bullshit. Have you ever played a contact sport? Whether you spear the guy in the air or whether you spear him the instant he hits the ground isn't going to make fuckall bit of difference. If you hit him hard enough, he's going to drop the ball. End of story. It's about timing. Every big hit you see is all timing. If they can take the necessary steps to position themselves, load up, and then launch their helmet directly between the receiver's numbers, into the ball, or into their helmet, they can sure as fuck take the necessary steps to position themselves, load up, and then launch their shoulder into the guy the second his foot hits the ground. It's going to change the game? Well, no shit. So did the 2 minute warning, so did instant replay, so have a bunch of other rules over the years. Deal with it. I'm not lobbying to take away hard hits. I'm all for it. I'm against (and always have been against) leading with the helmet. It's been a rule for a long time. It's about damn time they start enforcing it. The only people bitching about it are fans who have no concept of the true damage brain injuries can cause and the defensive players whose egos rely on illegal, dangerous hits.
Yep, and guess what? It happens to be the same sport you play, rugby. Granted, I only played for a year though. Actually it does. If it didn't then why were you saying earlier 'well just let them make the reception then'. Sure they can time the hit for when the player touches the ground, but then the player has more time to secure the ball. Anyone with a shred of common sense can see how that restriction makes it harder on the defender. How is this the same thing? The instant replay just makes sure the refs can get calls right. The two minute warning essentially adds a time out and another commercial break. Changing the way people can hit is way, way different than these adoptions. I have no idea how you can even compare these three. I think everyone here is against leading with the helmet, but earlier you were saying only allow wrap tackles. If you're not against allowing hard hits I'm not sure we disagree on that much. Again, not calling for cheap shots to the head. I've been drilled like that before and it's not fun. The nfl can suspend those people if they want, as long as they allow defenders to play the sport they were taught.
I thought this was a good (but very hard) hit but he got fined for hitting a defenseless receiver. I'm assuming it's because hit head went down but it looks to me after watching the replay that he was trying to lead with his right shoulder.
I was watching a new show on ESPN called Audibles (Herm, Steve Young, Dilfer and Keyshawn) and they were discussing that some players will WANT to get suspended as it will be some sort of badge of honor to be the first person suspended under the new rules, so some NFL analysts are predicting big hits this weekend.
Dallas Clark was just placed on injured reserve. Last night on ESPN's Audibles, Steve Young and Trent Dilfer said the tight end is the quarterback's best friend, the security blanket. Steve mentioned Brent Jones from his 49ers playing days, and Dilfer brought up Shannon Sharpe for his one year with the Baltimore Ravens, which culminated in a Super Bowl title. But this is Peyton Manning we're talking about. This is a guy who just threw a touchdown pass to Blair White a couple weeks ago. It's tough to tell if Clark's injury will really get in the way of Peyton reaching the playoffs for the ninth straight year. What do the rest of you think?
How is this not hypocritical of the league? They are pushing for a longer season that would directly lead to more concussions injuries and shorten the careers of players while simultaneously drastically stepping up the enforcement and penalties for big hits. Something that has not only been part of the game but a celebrated part. Watch a nfl network countdown of top players and every defensive highlight is precisely the type of hits they have recently been so focused on. This is the same league that is notorious for providing poor health care to retired players and will cut existing health care if the lockout occurs next season. Not to mention until this happened there were multiple pregame and sportscenter segments that focused on only big hits. Jacked Up.
I'm guessing the NFL thinks that their would be less concussions and injuries by making a safer league. Seem's silly but they are not being hypocritical, just greedy and trying to satisfy the media coverage of the hits. If they care about the players they would try and settle the 110 workers comp cases they have. A point that was brought up was actually making the field larger. I can see how this could help simply because a safety will not be able to just sit and wait for a streaking receiver who is looking at the ball. It would completely change the game offensively but it might give a player a chance to juke before getting demolished. I think they should fine the player who leads with his head. I'm not sure about the Jackson hit but the guy who went after Heap should be fined, also it seems that "incidental contact" happens a lot as well. How do you avoid hitting a ducking RB in the head sometimes?
Audibles is probably the best Football show I've seen in a long time. I thought it was fucking awesome. They did a test show like two weeks ago before even advertising it like they're doing now. I couldn't turn away. They 4 guys really got into it the debates. This Sunday is going to be exciting, because I don't think players are going to lead with their helmets for big hits just to get the suspension, but they're going to rock the shit out of players with their shoulders. And that one Harrison hit they keep showing before the actual helmet lead, why do they keep showing it? It seems like he's hitting with his forearm. I don't have the sports science right, but I feel like helmet should beat forearm in most cases. And yep. Peyton is fucked. When his receivers get blanketed and his run game is off, he always went to Clark for a 15-20 yard gain. Can't wait for the Patriots Colts game.
Yeah, I agree. I wish it were on every week. They said the next show is November 18, so I guess it's on just once a month. Hopefully ESPN gets pushed to make it a weekly show.

Watching this Bears game is caused me to pop some chewable Pepto-Bismol. This shit is terrible. I can't believe how bad the offense is. Just as they get a solid drive going and break their 28 unsuccessful 3rd down conversation streak, Cutler tosses a pick 6. At first, I really hated Cutler for looking like a sulky bitch. Now he can get away with it because he's eating shit every play. Also, why is there a little voice in my head rooting for the Browns and Bills? I don't give a fuck about either of those teams, but for some reason I want them to win. Go Football.
What the fuck was going on in that game? Did they grease the ball? There were roughly 1987337645 fumbles.
I'm convinced Childress is the dumbest coach in the league. He had 30 seconds there and Randy Moss. What do you have to lose? And what is with all these interceptions from Rodgers? He already has 2 more than his total from last year. I hope they come out firing in the second half. I can't stomach another loss at Lambeau to Favre. Not again.
They better overturn this, but FOR THE LOVE OF FUCKING GOD STOP THE 3 MAN RUSH. We get burned on it every time. Does our coaching staff ever learn? No. Never.
