The bears offense isn't particularly great right now. Can you imagine how bad they would be without Forte? I just noticed the rams are averaging less than ten points per game. Good god, that offense sucks, and so does Bradford despite what their fans want to believe.
Lloyd to the Rams for a conditional 5th in 2012. Royal could be gone too. Elway and Fox are doing this for lulz. They have to be.
Skip Bayless is arguing that the Cowboys are the second best team in the NFC (behind Green Bay). Not the division. The whole conference. My head is exploding. I can't believe he is Rick's brother. I have known for a while he's just a professional troll who always takes the most controversial opinion b/c it sets him apart and gets him attention, but it's just exhausting.
We've been over Lloyd's numbers and typical production, but a 6th-5th round pick seemed a bit low to me. But then again, he's in the last year of his contract and I imagine the Broncos didn't think they were going to resign him. Plus, I did not realize that he is already 30 years old and he is only 6ft tall. A shorter guy who's going to lose a step or two doesn't sound very appealing to a rebuilding team. I forgot that Josh McDaniels is the OC for the Rams so it makes sense on their end. So glad someone already made one of these so I didn't have to.
I think I remember hearing that Lloyd was an adamant Kyle Orton supporter. Now that Tebow has the reins, I'm sure they want everybody on board. Along with the contract being up after this year, and last year being something of a fluke year, I don't see why this seems like such a crazy move. When he was on the Niners I remember him being something of a locker room annoyance and the kind of guy who takes plays off. I was surprised to find out he was still in the league last year, much less putting up gaudy numbers. It does seem like they are selling kind of low on the guy though. Also, the Niners are 3-0 on the road against Detroit, Cincinatti, and Philly. That is all.
6 foot isn't really short for a receiver. Jennings is under that and Welker is well under 6 foot. Ditto for Steve Smith. A lot of receivers aren't particularly tall because the position favors quickness, which tall guys don't usually have. That being said, the best of the best are usually a little taller. I think the broncos management have lost their minds giving up Lloyd for a 6th/conditional 5th (which they should get). The guy is worth a 3rd rounder in my opinion. I get that he's 30 and has only 3-4 years left of being a #1/2 receiver, but the odds the broncos get a similarly talented player out of a 5th round pick are pretty slim. He was probably the best player on that offense and their dumping him for virtually nothing. Just not smart. I agree Skip Bayless is an annoying moron. He was babbling the other day about how it's Rodgers' fault they lost to Arizona in the playoffs even though he put up 45 points and 420 yards. I don't really get how that guy has a job, and while there are a lot of bad so called 'analysts' he's by far the worst. He's also the most shameless Favre lover on the planet, which pretty much makes him a douche by default.
Yes they're unlikely to replace him one-for-one in the fifth round, but that's not really how trading works. First, contract year players come at significant discount, since retention may or may not happen. First, everyone in the NFL knows that the Broncos are in a seller's position. And everyone has known for a while that Lloyd might be moved at some point. And if they didn't know these things....they sure as hell knew by end of last week. It's damn hard to make an equal-value trade when the other side knows what you're up to and everyone is sure of the value of the parts being traded (when it's more uncertain, it's a little easier). I expected a third rounder, but that was probably the best-case scenario. Third through fifth was the realistic range. So a fifth is bad, but not that bad. Also, word is that Eddie Royal might be moved too, with the same teams being named as potential destinations. He seems like he'd fit in pretty well on the Panthers.
Lloyd was awesome and can make amazing catches, but he was not worth what he probably wanted. The compensation was low, but it's better than nothing. Royal has had 3 coaches since he came in, he wasn't properly used by McDaniels. I love the guy, but I understand why he's available.
Here's a couple of interesting bits of trivia from the South Florida AM sportstalk radio shows: The Florida Panthers scored more goals last night (7) than the Dolphins scored points (6). And In giving up (2) 1st round picks for Carson Palmer, the Raiders have now spent more 1st round picks on a quarterback than the Miami Dolphins have in their entire franchise history.
As mentioned, Oakland trades their 2012 first round pick and a conditional pick in 2013 to Cincy for Carson Palmer. The condition is that if the Raiders win at least one playoff game this season, they give up a 2013 first round pick. If they fail to win a playoff game this year, they give up a 2013 second round pick. Here's a pretty good article breaking down the details. Two important things it points out: It'll be interesting to see how Palmer does. He is well suited for Oakland's vertical offense but the man hasn't taken a snap since January. Wonder just what kind of shape he's kept himself in as well. Granted the Raiders were never that concerned with the fitness of their QBs. EDIT: Here's a bit of poor prognostication from 24 hours ago. "Palmer to Raiders trade is unlikely."
This trade makes a lot of sense for Oakland. A team with a 4-2 record picking up a Pro Bowl level QB isn't going to be drafting very high. The fact that Oakland doesn't have a pick until the 5th round (until they get untradeable compensatory picks for Gallery and Asomugha anyway) only cements the fact that they're going for it all this year and the next. The only issues I can see is that Oakland is hovering right at the limit of the salary cap and Palmer is going to have zero time to learn the playbook.
Yeah, the Raiders. I don't think he's great but I don't think he's pure bench material either. This reminds me of what the old school Raiders did...and they did it well.
Palmer is all class, never bad mouthing anybody or shifting blame. A lot of people gave him shit for pulling this retirement stunt but I empathized with the guy. Our organization has got to be a black hole of suck to work for. At least Mike Brown made a decent decision for once. Like to see how he holds up somewhere else.
Al Davis lives. Shit man, we just made out like bandits. I don't know what I'd rather have: the Raiders tank so we can get a higher pick in '12 or win in the playoffs for the first round pick in '13.
Palmer fell into a pretty good situation. A very good running back to rely on, capable WRs, and he's had plenty of rest. That said, I don't think there's been any evidence that post-surgery Palmer is still a pro-bowl level QB, and he's going to have very little time to learn the Raiders (albeit simple) offense. He's the kind of QB who will try to fit the ball into tight spots and probably cause a slew of turnovers that will hinder the Raiders. I'm not really sure what's going to happen, but I definitely don't see AFC championship in the near future. They do play the Broncos, Vikings, Bears, Chiefs twice, and the Dolphins throughout the rest of the season. A playoff spot is very attainable barring a complete breakdown.
Campbell. Duh. Am I the only one who feels the raiders gave up too much for Palmer? He turns 32 in December and I don't think he's quite an elite QB. Definitely a step up from Campbell though, and like you guys pointed out he'll have time to get back in form while they have a bye and play a couple terrible teams that McFadden can shred. This was a very smart trade for the bengals. The guy wasn't going to play for you, and if he's worth that much to a team you just can't pass on it. If Palmer doesn't turn into what the raiders think he is, this trade is going to be so ugly. It's as if they've approached this like they're a team ready for the super bowl minus a serviceable QB, but the problem is they're not.
No doubt, the Raiders gave up way too much. They were desperate for quarterback and despite Mike Brown being a stick in the mud, every man has his price. Palmer's QB rating has dropped every year since 2005. To be fair, he had reconstructive knee and elbow surgery within that time frame. I think he still has plenty of game left in him. He looked great in his last couple of games last year throwing to Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson rather than T.O. and Chad. I'm optimistic about the Bengals' future. We have an efficient defense without any stars (though Carlos Dunlap, I think, will get there) and lots of young playmakers on offense in Dalton, Green, Gresham, Shipley (hurt this year). I hope we use the new draft picks to upgrade the O-line.
Seems like we've needed a new O-line since Palmer got here. He never had much time and wasn't one to scramble or extend plays. Luckily we've had a turn around and the rebuilding hasn't been as bad as anyone anticipated. Somehow I still don't feel like giving Mike Brown credit, I mean it was like waiving two large set of tits in ya' face.
