Edgar Wright, director of Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead, et al penned a nice tribute. http://www.edgarwrighthere.com/2017/07/17/remembering-george-romero/
Also the very temporary STP replacement for Scott Weiland. I guess all those shrieky, angsty lyrics weren't bullshit. CRAAAAAWLING IN MY SKEEEEEEEEEEEEN Christ. Awful stuff. Sorry, they were a lousy band in my eyes.
That sucks. Their music may have been shit but it was entertaining and good for a gym playlist. Now all they have is that ambiguous Asian dude who kind of raps.
He actually had decent chops as far as rock voices go. They did fall squarely in the millennium based nu metal hot topic teen angst bands for me. It makes me wonder what is going on in their lives with endless capacity in time and money resources to get serious help but can't get serious depression under control.
You can get famous with a shitty voice. You can't get famous, get the attention of Chris Cornell, and be chosen to replace Scott Weiland with a shitty voice. Dude had talent.
I was 15 when I got Meteora and was absolutely an angsty teen but holy crap I wore out the metaphorical grooves of that CD. Hadn't listened in years but I think I will be today.
Linkin Park has been panned by many, but I think Chester had one of the better "scream" voices out there. Their collaboration with Jay-Z was phenomenal. Six kids and a wife. Depression is brutal. Tragic.
Doesn't matter how often you go to therapy or the quality of it. Depression takes one moment to turn into suicide. Not really something you can get "under control," rather something you just learn to cope with as best you can and it ebbs and flows, until it flows too hard and you swallow a bullet or hang yourself. There's a reason you don't hear about the elderly suffering from depression -- for those with severe depression, they don't make it that far. Also, who the fuck names their kid Chester? If that was my name I'd kill myself.
They were the last "big" rock group. Who since LP could consistently fill arenas? Critically panned but it was damned near universally heard. That truly sucks.
Mental health is simply an enigma we haven't even scratched the surface of. When people are depressed, no amount of money, pussy or resources will plug that hole. And until we start pouring real, actual money and research into it we'll continue to question these exact things. Imagine if we funded mental health the same way we funded things like the armed forces.
They're doing a study here in Australia into the genetics behind depression, having dealt with it since around 14/15 I did the survey they had and they wrote back asking for a saliva sample so they could add it to the data they're collecting. I'm very interested to see what arises from it. As for Linkin Park remember that taste is subjective but all should be able to agree that he had a hell of a set of lungs. One of my best mates used to absolutely smash their albums on a constant basis, it was all we would ever listen to if he drove.
