    Merry (late) Christmas fellow idiots,

We had kind of a subdued holiday here too. We hosted 2 get-togethers and went to the in-laws for a third.
The first was with the wife's kids + their SOs. That was really nice. Now that they are all grown, it's great to get them together (except for mine in Taiwan with his mom/stepdad) since they are spread all over the state.
The next was my moms side of the family which includes the One-Upper aunt and the annoying-as-fuck brother in-law who made an ass of himself pointing out to my wife that he had clearly dug through the medicine cabinet at least once. Also, my dad who keeps finding a way to get invited even though he and my mother divorced 25 years ago. He wasn't too bad except for his non-stop inappropriate or racist jokes. I've learned to tune him out but one of the step daughters refuses to come around when he's around because she knows herself - she's going to say something to him if she's been drinking.
The in-laws get-together was pretty laid back as well, no family drama (this time).
Christmas day was just me and the wife which consisted of great leftovers, day drinking, naked naps, and lots of bad TV/Christmas movies (wife's choice).
No really great or bad gifts, and everyone seemed genuinely happy with what they got, even if this year was a little less than other years.

I'm off until Jan. 2 and was hoping to be able to get in a good bit of duck hunting but the weather is going to be absolute shit all but Friday... but there's not been many ducks to be found so I have no idea if I'm even going to bother.

Oh well, there's plenty of bourbon and shows to binge watch. Plus all the Bowl Games.

    Cheers!

I am considering a greyhound bus for the trip back home at Mardi Gras. I'm giving it another couple weeks to see if the flights go down in price. I'm about to get murdered, aren't I?

I had to use a greyhound a little while ago. You’ll meet some....colorful folks on there.

How far was your trip? I want to know about yours!

I found the Frugal Travel Guru (formally known as the Greyhound Guru) and have been watching his videos to prevent theft or death. Looks like most of it is common sense stuff, but the worst thing that can happen is getting stranded at a small or unsavory stop. But I'm a cheap idiot so I'll charge my stungun and strap on the mace. Let's go!

It’s the bus depot where the real action happens. “Adventures In Babysitting” nailed it perfectly.

I don't know the particulars of dudes medical history, but they say in that article that he was schizophrenic. The main thing about people with major mental impairments is it they are usually okay when they are on their meds and compliant with treatment. And mental impairments that include paranoia and distrust of others usually depends on the patient's family and friends to vouch for them and their behavior because compliance can be iffy at best. Schizophrenia does not manifest usually until twenties anyway. So his compliance history was probably short in the best case scenario.

Worst case scenario, he didn't have anybody vouching for him and was totally off the rails for a long period of time. Usually they don't have court orders for treatment until something really bad happens. Turns out, really bad for this guy was murdering somebody.

    Womp womp.

A good friend of mine was just found dead.

He’s bounced around jobs as a line cook and I guess tried to model his life after the more self-indulgent parts of “Kitchen Confidential.” First time in rehab was for alcohol and perscription drug abuse. He was sober for a few years, but then the stress of starting a family got to him and he hit the bottle hard. He and his wife separated, so from the sounds of it that was what spurred him to drink a bottle of vodka and chew some ambien. Cops found him on a wellness check.

Normally it kinda sucks, but right now I’m very glad that my brain surgery has largely removed my ability to experience normal emotions. Regardless, this story is a good lesson: if you hit the bottle for help, it’s a good sign you need professional help instead. Don’t be afraid of asking for a hand.

On a lighter note, here's a video of a guy reviewing a scotch while his girlfriend who just broke up with him moves out in the background:

You sure he didn't dump her? He seems pretty pleased with himself. AND he had a great week at work, after all.

Having no info whatsoever about a random Internet person's personal life.... if I were to reason a guess?

Dude had his priorities in order. She argued, he was tired of her shit and continued doing what he wanted despite the repercussions.

He made some comment about how the scotch did not compromise and he was definitely talking about their relationship.

I mean, there’s not too much to tell. It was from one end of the state(NC) to the other. Nothing too crazy, just people talking to themselves and one or two people obviously going through some sort of withdrawal. I’ve never done it across state lines though.

Not sure if this helps, but a I have a 6'4 retired Marine coworker who geo-bach's regularly takes Boltbus or Megabus to & from DC/Charlotte. He refuses to take Greyhound over an aversion to getting murdered.

5 out of 5 former Marines agree that I'm going to die. But I'd be missing out on situations like this:

Edit: this guy takes a million years to tell a story but he grows on you.
