Am I the only one bothered by chiropractors calling themselves “doctors”?

I have one in the suite next to my office. He has a “doctor is in/out” sign.

I suppose anyone could call themselves a doctor if they don’t have a degree from medical school nor a doctorate.

I’m bothered by chiropractors in general. I know people who swear by them, and get their backs aligned regularly. To me they’re glorified massage therapists. Yes, they can relieve pain and discomfort temporarily, but you might want to look into the underlying causes of why your spine is fucked up and requires realigning in the first place.

There is NO way you could pay me enough to stand in front of that thing... those "safety" sewer grates would be somewhat useless protection, I'd think, and would probably just shred the bat/ball into lots of little pieces of shrapnel.

I think the next test should be to show just how useless that pitcher protection actually is.

    100% agree.

They are not doctors and it does annoy me that they refer to themselves as such. Their relief is temporary and they can also really hurt their patients. It annoys me that the clinics I've visited here at the hospital for actual medical care always recommend the chiropractor in their suite of offices for services. It annoys me that when I did see a chiropractor several years ago (my back was at its worst and I was doing everything in my power to get some sort of relief, OTCs, RX meds, PT, massages, chiropractor) I was forced to see through a fucking marketing video about why chiropractic care was legit and neccessary while also recommending it for everyone including goddamn babies. Babies fresh out of the oven.

    Give me a break.

I went to a chiropractor for chronic lower back issues about a year or two ago out of desperation, having tried everything else. Same deal, certifications out the wazoo, online recommendations from people who travel to see him. And he worked, while I was seeing him. My back felt great for those two months I had weekly appointments. But the pain returned as soon as I stopped going.

Then about 8 months ago I started going to the gym somewhat regularly, 3-4 days a week at first (now 5-6 days a week with intentional recovery days). It was the first time in my life I started doing targeted strengthening. Talked to the trainers to get some ideas. The back pain disappeared almost immediately and hasn't hinted at returning.

Never once did my chiropractor even come close to suggesting I get my lazy ass to the gym.

I know some people swear by them though, and I don't feel I should tell people what they should or shouldn't do with their money and body. Personally though I do feel that going to the chiropractor is akin to lighting your money on fire, or in the case of last night, fireworks.

I think chiropractors are more hit and miss than others in the medical fields (other than homeopaths... because fuck them), due to the low bar to get certified, but I believe there are a few good ones out there. My sister sees one and he does wonders... straight up good guy who does stuff that makes her feel better when she twigs something.

On the other hand, my ex-wife was having issues and as a "well, what do we have to lose" trial, went to see a local chiropractor, and he wouldn't even start to see her until she signed up for a "year's wellness program". It was a very high-pressure sales gig in the office, to the point that she felt scared and called me from the bathroom. "GET OUT NOW AND DON'T TALK TO THE FUCKER". We then filed complaints about it, and sure enough, dude was sketchy as fuck and ended up doing jail time a year later for some sort of scam he was running.

Then there was the chiropractor I used to hunt with... super nice guy, and did a great job of setting a dislocated hip on one of our hunting dogs who went over a log in a bad way.

Not sure they're heavy enough to stay where they are shred the bat, the ball for sure though. I imagine if the bat hit them, it'd push the grate into that plywood and send some nasty splinters back though. Either way, couldn't pay me enough. Not just in front though, I wouldn't wanna be anywhere near it. A piece of one of those bats could come flying through the fence behind it and cause all kinds of havoc if it hit the fence in the right spot and at the right angle. Only way I'd get footage is with a remotely operated camera. Spinning things scare the fuck outta me, see: Blendo.

    Y’all’s chiropractors are insane.
Mine’s like “I wanna see you twice. Three times at most. After that you need to have your primary care refer you to ortho.”

$50 a visit and no bullshit about anything.

    Do chiropractic treatments really work?
I know that my dad would get them once every few years when he'd overexert himself, and he said they worked, but then I've heard other people say that they're quacks.

I'm asking because I have lower back pain, and a real doctor took a bunch of xrays and couldn't find anything wrong.

In other news, Jungle Julia got a new cat today.
    Fuck. I hate cats.

Short answer: they can work in the short term.

Longer answer: A lot of persistent back pain is caused by nerves being pressed on. Discs that are bulging and pressing on nerves, reduced disc space causing disc bulges or nerves being pressed on, misalignment causing nerves to be pressed on. There's a whole laundry list of stuff that can be slightly off in your back that causes pain. An Xray won't really show much except maybe reduced disc spacing. You need an MRI. A good chiropractor can "realign" you which reduces the pressing on of nerves and gives temporary pain relief. The problem is that your daily life and habits make shit go back out of line really quickly, but how quickly depends on the person. Things like your job, how you sleep, your posture. Exercise can help a lot because it strengthens the muscles around your back and improves your posture. Exercise also helps with inflammation especially if you're eating better along with your exercise. For low back pain, physical therapy can start out almost like massage therapy and then progresses to stretching and yoga type training to improve core strength and functioning.

There's a lot of missing details in there but that's the main swath of it. Personally, I've found that high strength anti inflammatory meds with stretching and yoga do the most for me. I also have ben gay muscle rub, bottle of muscle relaxers, and a tens unit if it gets bad. And I avoid lifting anything too heavy or repetitive bending motions. I've had repeated disc tears and once you have scar tissue in there it is easier to tear again, plus a few bulging discs and reduced spacing. The only thing that got me straight when I had really bad flare ups (probably re tearing a disc) was epidural steroid injections.

This specifically is what did it for me. Broke my lower back (running) years ago, then combine that with shitty to no exercise and I was in a world of hurt. Started out with stretching, massage, body weight core and mobility exercises with the weekly guidance of a strength and conditioning trainer. Started watching what I ate, added more of the good stuff and took out the bad. Now I'm able to do it largely on my own, low weight high reps and lot of isometric exercises.

You can say change your posture but it isn't that simple if you don't have the core strength to do so naturally. Especially if your job involves a lot of bending over and things that put you in awkward positions, you ultimately need to make a conscious effort to strengthen those support muscle groups in order to be totally pain free. A good (and I stress that: GOOD) chiropractor can certainly make a positive difference, but under ideal circumstances that difference will only get you to the point where you can move your body in a way to develop a more permanent solution through flexibility, mobility and strength training.

I think the main issue is that modern medicine has turned into doctors = meds for instant fix. Some problems take a lot of work on the part of the patient to improve and due to how the system is set up, Drs don't usually spend a lot of time educating the patient. Hell, I empathize with a lot of docs... even if they had the time a lot of patients don't want to hear it. Meds don't fix everything, in fact, they can cause a whole lot of problems. Back problems tend to be chronic and take a lot of work to overcome. You can wallow in it and be miserable or put yourself first and work on it.

This is so wonderful. Why can’t stuff like this make the news cycle anymore?
