I would have guessed mid-30s. Absolutely devastated by this news. The world lost a brilliant mind and an even better person.
Not just operated... dude was also the main tech (Artoo Technician) behind them... upgraded/maintained all the remote control systems, etc. One of the reasons he went to Mythbusters was that the physical modelling/animatronics role at ILM he had was shrinking due to expanded use of CGI.

Yup. The Fat Guy outlived many of his healthier or younger “Cocoon” co-stars. Including Brian Dennehy. although to be fair, Brinkley was cast as a senior citizen at 49 years old for that movie. He has ALWAYS looked old.
