She absolutely killed that role. Sad as it towered over everything else she did. Star Trek fans know her as the sniveling, conniving, Kai Winn Adami in DS9.
Later on she was excellent as Frank’s equally awful mother on the USA version of “Shameless”. Most didn’t recognize her by that time.
I agree, I love that song. But the fact I’m an aging white guy probably doesn’t reduce the corniness.
It was just played to death at the time and then he never followed it up with anything close. It was a gritty banger with one of the all time great hooks. Video also had peak Michelle Pfeiffer. Then the ultimate praise a Weird Al cover:
I can’t hear Gangsta’s Paradise without thinking about all the trailers for Dangerous Minds. It was the first time I was aware of a movie’s obvious Oscar campaign.
Apparently this parody pissed of Coolio for a bit. He got over it. https://twitter.com/danozzi/status/1575314452286578689
A. great song from one of the worst movies ever made. It made that movie a number one box office hit and it was worse then shit.
Lol. For some reason I remember a few years ago you specifically ranting about how Michelle Pfeiffer was the shittiest actress imaginable for that movie.
Wasn't that all a publicity stunt? I could have sworn that there was an interview with Weird Al where he said Coolio agreed to it.
My understanding is that Weird Al was told Coolio had said it was fine to do, but hadn't actually done that. They spoke about it and the miscommunication got fixed up and Coolio gave his blessing.
What street gang wouldn’t follow their teacher’s word after she beats one of them at a game of pool? The only trope that movie was missing was the climax being decided by some sort of downhill “race” involving makeshift vehicles.
Brando was seen as insane—which he was— but now we can see that he was so ahead of his time for sending her to reject his Oscar. Fuck award shows.
Every time I think of Brando I just remember John Travolta doing an impression of him on SNL years ago. “would you like a cookie?” “sure, what kind is it?” “let’s just say you’ll have a cookie-eating grin on your face.”
