Sitting here at my desk at home, I heard the wind beginning to roar. I took note of the time and the temperature. It is rapidly falling from 36 degrees when I first took note to 28 less than an hour later. After raining all morning, it should get interesting out there pretty quick.
While the rest of the country is getting crushed by cold, I'm sitting here in New England where it should actually be cold, and it's 55 degrees. Just went for a walk with the dog and had to take my jacket off.
If I have one more family member call me about a frozen fucking pipe… drip the faucets. If the cold water line is frozen, try running the hot water line because chances are they’re plumbed right next to each other and the heat will break up the ice. Insulate your shit BEFORE it gets bad. Know where the shutoffs are, as well as the main house one. Fucking christ people! And this is just the start of winter. Fuck me.
Wut? I mean, it keeps the cold in as well as it keeps the cold out. If you get hot and run AC, why would you not insulate your houses? I can see not insulating exterior wall water lines or outdoor lines… but are you not insulating your houses at all?
There are plenty of places that were built before the invention of AC, or even built afterward without AC, and if they were in a warm climate, the builders didn't bother with insulation. Lots of places in LA like that.
Oh I just feel like all the places I’ve been in the south and in California the houses have all had garbage insulation, especially under the houses. Maybe my limited experience is incorrect? I was way colder in California than I’ve ever been in Michigan indoors since they have great weather most of the time.
I mean it makes sense… I just haven’t been exposed to it. And weather is changing pretty noticeably and faster than I think people were expecting. I have the luxury of living in an area that gets stinking hot and humid in summer and fucking cold in the winter, so our houses are probably more robust than some others.
think of the US not as 50 states, but as 50 countries, each with their own individual politics and climate. Makes a bit more sense that way. Our ranch house was built in the 1960s, not long after schools were desegregated. Our rock walls are crazy thick, but the roof is designed to vent the rising hot air. According to energy.gov, most NEW homes had central AC by the late 1960s. I can only imagine that the vast majority of what exists inside the frame of this house was retro-fit.
At my parents’ house in Connecticut it was 60F this morning. Now it’s sleeting pretty hard. Wild weather all day.
It was 50F and raining here in north Jersey around noon, now it’s about 10F and incredibly windy with a nice layer of sleet on the ground. All of that standing water from the last two days flash froze and there is ice everywhere.
Fuuuuuuuuuu left the dough proofing in the oven while it preheated. First day of the MiL visit is going just swimmingly. I'm hungry. Maybe I'll just buy a goddamn pizza.
