Dayum! It didn't look like that hard of a hit... but it looks like it was one of those fluke timing things that could stop the heart. Hopefully the CPR was all it took to get things going again and no harm done. Fucking scary.
It feels like (I'm not a doctor) that CPR isn't the right thing if it's a spinal injury. So, yeah, maybe a coincidental aneurysm or something? Very scary. Crazy that they suspended the game. I mean, appropriate, but just never seen it.
I was thinking that if you get a big hit at the right time in your heart beat, it can stop your heart... and that's what happened. I didn't get any sense of a spinal injury or aneurysm... but hey, I'm no doctor.
Looking at the clip, I think the chest hit he took might have caused something like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commotio_cordis?wprov=sfti1
Not sure why the long suspension of the game... Unless, and this is kind of macabre... if he died, would the field be considered the scene, and have to be investigated? Far fetched, to say the least... but man, I don't know?
CPR is only conducted if the heart has stopped. If you don’t get the heart started again, or keep the blood pumping until someone can, spinal injuries are irrelevant.
We just switched to the game for the hell of it, and didn’t know what was going on. I can’t wait for all the wonderful Facebook posts about this that we’ll get to see.
That's what I said. I guess that means that I could be a highly regarded sports medicine doc now, eh?
I think it’s happened before in hockey? That was my first guess too when I heard about it — wasn’t watching the game but saw an alert and then watched a clip. you can recover from it physically, but mentally is a whole different game. Shit at this point I don’t think Tua should play another snap either. There’s gonna be A LOT of people considering whether football is worth continuing to play after tonight. or at least their should be
I've heard about it happening a few times... hockey was one (junior hockey, which then brought on the push to put cardio machines in hockey rinks), and the other was a baseball pitcher taking a line drive to the chest.
a picture of a shrugging minion, with the caption “Hey Brandon, what’s with all the athletes getting heart attacks lately?”
Relevant bit of info: when I had to do cpr on a neighbor a few years back, I was told by first responders that less than 20% of those who receive CPR survive. I’ve seen figures as low as 10%. I’m sure Hamlin is in the best possible medical care possible, so I’m optimistic, but at the same time, he is not facing great odds. Same hospital that got Shazier walking though…
I've seen different reports, ones saying he received CPR and others saying he received oxygen, which are of course two different things altogether.
He was immediately given medical care and is young and healthy. His odds are much better than your average person.
