I used to hike in that area and have been following the case since he first went missing. It seemed pretty clear, pretty early, that he wasn't going to be found alive, but still crazy it took this long to find him.

Is it the hike itself that makes it dangerous, or is it exposure/temperature changes? You can walk on your feet from dead winter to blistering summer in less than a day in that state.

It's a combination of things. The Baldy/Cucamonga peaks are ~9k-10k feet, so while things are a nice 50-70 degrees in nearby LA in the winter, there's real snow and ice up on the summits. This turns what is a fairly simple, if strenuous, hike in the summer, into a legitimate mountaineering challenge in the winter. A lot of people get in trouble because they go unprepared for the conditions, since they just came from the beach a few miles away, and aren't expecting to need crampons and ice axes to go on that hiking trail they saw (summer) pictures of on instagram. Sands was an experienced climber, so he certainly had the right gear, but even then the ice and snow, combined with the steep ridges, can lead to falls or small avalanches that could, with a bit of bad luck, take out even an experienced climber. Mountaineers looking for a challenge will also sometimes attempt the Baldy Bowl instead of the trail, which is, as the name implies, a steep bowl that you go pretty much straight up with mountaineering tools. That's more dangerous than the normal trail as well.

Madonna was intubated in the ICU. Apparently she's out now, but she was fuckered up there for a bit.

Sadly, there are no reports indicating that they fixed her face while she was in there.

So? From what I understand about the 90s, Madonna had a LOT of tubes thrown in her.

I don’t think that is decade specific.

True, but it was the 90’s when she basically fucked the entire NBA. And Vanilla Ice.

Kevin Mitnick died from pancreatic cancer.

He wasn't a celebrity exactly, but he was a seminal figure in the hacking scene in the early days of the internet - one of the first who really exposed just how insecure many of these connected systems were.

My office sent out an email about his death because we use his company, KnowBe4, for our security training. Dude led a pretty interesting life. https://www.engadget.com/kevin-mitn...-wanted-hacker-has-passed-away-084912966.html

KnowBe4 is a Mitnick thing? Crazy... I didn't know that... I've used it and recommended it for dev training for a few years now, and my company adopted it upon my recommendation.

Damn, called it. I still have a solid shot at the other two.

Bummer though. I enjoyed him and Lady Gaga singing together

Heard he was sliding into dementia soon after that collaboration. Sad stuff.

He was in the midst of Dementia when he performed with Lady Gaga. It is crazy how the mind works, but 60 minutes did a segment about his battle at the time with the disease.

Yeah, watching him recall a song immediately, while not recalling much else, was heartbreaking.

Tony Bennett was the king of smooth, and had no hates. Cool people like him don’t exist anymore.
