What you get in New Orleans is the regular batch of drunks clearing out around 2AM and then the crowd of chefs, waiters, waitresses, hotel workers, and other people from the "hospitality industry" pouring in once they get off work, so the bars never really stop. There's always a crowd of people that need to drink, so the bars cater to it.

As an aside, if you haven't ever been around a bunch of waiters drinking at 4AM it's something you should try. That is a thoroughly maladjusted and fucked up group of people.

I was half-joking about that, and I agree- really the only reason I'd tip for getting a bottled beer is to get any service for the rest of the night. But if I didn't tip and in return was ignored for the rest of the night, do you think I'll return? If I ordered some drinks above and beyond pouring a pint or a rail mixer and didn't tip that may be out of line, but otherwise it just seems like bullshit to me.

Work in the kitchen, it's even better. They attract a "fun" group of people.

I'm convinced the cocaine industry would fall apart if it wasn't for restaurant kitchens in New Orleans.

Wait, so you mean line cooks have that much energy because they are on cocaine? I thought they were just very dedicated people.

But holy moly is it fun.

We stayed out after work til 3am one night and it was amazing. There is a picture of me groping my coworker's right booby while el husband has his arms around me, looking like he is trying to pull my drunk ass out of that situation. She said she paid $7500 for her breast reduction and to feel free to touch so of fucking course I did.

What's a mac 'n cheese? I'm torn between saying it sounds awesome or gross.

Here's my dilemma. I always get a medium Dunkin Donuts coffee, cream and sugar (they just know the magic combination--delicious). It costs $1.79. They have one of those big ass cups near the drive through about Gratuities. I feel stupid tipping my .21 change, but I feel just as stupid waiting to get it back. I get it back, and now have about $8 worth of dimes and pennies in my car. So I feel like I'm making the right decision. Plus if I start tipping more, I may decide to add up what I spend there on a weekly basis and talk myself out of going altogether. I really don't want that to happen.

    ...and? How were they?

A pizza topped with macaroni and cheese. Not the Kraft bullshit either (okay it's not bullshit), but real macaroni noodles and different cheeses. It's like the ultimate cheese pizza. The noodles end up cooked just right somehow and add an interesting texture and taste with the cheese and slightly crustier crust. They do takeout and delivery for the huge crazy pizzas too, it's the best.

I always felt weird about tipping at Sonic when just getting a soda or slushy or something, I thought that if I told the carhop to just keep the measly 30-40 cents change that it would be almost insulting. Then I talked to someone that worked at a sonic once and he was telling me how each carhop would just keep a cup in the back where they would dump all of these little 'tips', but at the end of the night they would walk away with $50 easy. Now I don't feel so bad about leaving seemingly insignificant little tips here and there.

Anyone take any online classes before that weren't court mandated?

I'm taking an epidemiology course online and its driving me crazy. I think schools offering online courses are simply going after a cash grab because they are worthless.

And no, its not University of Phoenix, its for the CU-Public Health Program.

Online classes are fucking stupid. They are a whole lot more work for less knowledge, full of busy work to prove you are doing something, and notoriously disorganized and therefore even more confusing and worthless. Schools either need to get their shit together or stop with them entirely. Fucking waste of time.

Really happy I dropped my online Biostatistics class. That would've sucked. I've done stats plenty of times because I have an Econ degree. However, its not like riding a bike, but more like riding a bike while blacked out. You may get where you are trying to go, however it'll be a fucked up painful process.

If it wasnt for here and the RMMB, I wouldn't know just how much contempt people have have for the restaurant industry. And what I learned is:

    - Nobody is happy
    - Everyone is horrible
    - No fun whatsoever

The entire thing sounds like a wading pool of contempt. Count me out.

My jobs in foodservice weren't all that bad. It could be a lot of fun at times and even a little gratifying if you really like cooking, but when it sucked it sucked badly.

The lone online-only class I took was a one-credit Alcohol and Drug education course during my freshman year, and my rule was to never work on it when sober. What I really hated were the TERRIBLE online test or homework programs where you'd get a write-in answer wrong for stuff like an errant space or comma, or they'd crash mid-essay.

But the thing that really, really chapped my ass? The $10K or so of my education that was mandatory Lib Ed bullshit like History of Rock and Roll and made no contribution to my education. To hell with an easy A, I'd rather not have to be paying the loans right now. "Well Rounded" translates to "Well Scammed" in my book now.

Yea in undergrad I never took those worthless classes. CU was pretty good at having classes that weren't too frivolous. I think the biggest bullshit class I took was Film, but every school has that.

My twin took a fucking class in racquetball, for actual college credit, at Indiana University Bloomington. What the fuck.

Ever sat down and calculated exactly how much one minute of class actually costs you? Yeah, the joke classes don't seem so funny after doing that.

    Not the only reason.

That bartender makes $2.13 an hour. They live on tips, literally.

Here's a good guide to tipping:

If the employees make minimum wage or better, tipping is not necessary. Of course, there are exceptions to this.

If the employee makes $2.13 an hour, tipping is expected.

I've bartended, and if the shift is slow, I've walked out with $20 in cash. Add the $2.13 an hour (minus taxes of course), and as you can see, I"m on easy street! Good shifts? For 10 hours, I've made $250. So obviously that's really good, but again, since you're balancing shit shifts with money shifts, if you don't tip at all? Yeah, no one will bartend anymore.

The other side of the equation is if employers need to pay all employees minimum wage, thus making tips less expected, you're going to pay more for food and beverages. You've just basically quadrupled the front of the house labor costs. And most people don't realize that restaurants don't operate on large profit margins. Now we can debate whether such a move would be better for society or not, but by not tipping - and pushing a minimum wage for service workers, you're going to pay more for your visit.

It depends, from a higher education resource perspective, they are much more efficient and take up less faculty time. Listen, like it or not there are pre-req courses that you need to equalize a knowledge base for kids from different HS backgrounds, would you rather deal with some online PPTs and videos or pile into a 300 person lecture hall with some foreign TA who speaks limited English? I would never want to take an online course directly related to my field of study, but I took Human Resources and MIS classes online in grad school and they were fantastic. They were less work and saved me from 2 hours of lecture each week when I was only going to need to know headlines and very top line topics anyways.

I took Horseback Riding and Broomball in college. I stayed an extra year due to switching majors and then adding a second major, but that only took up 28 of the 32 hours over two semesters. So I took a 2 credit Phys Ed course each semester. I don't know specifically why they exist, but they were great. I knew kids that were accounting majors that needed their 150 hours for their CPA or whatnot, but it didn't matter what those hours consisted of, so ostensibly, you'd have kids taking a critical class or two over the summer and making up the remaining credits with bullshit basket weaving classes. Its dumb when you pay per class, but when you're paying a semester tuition regardless of class load, might as well.

Racquetball was awesome! You shut your mouth! Best waste of college money ever! And I got GRADED on it. Dean's List, here I come. You know what I hated? Piano 101 or whatever the hell it was called. I had to study for that damn class. It might have been only 1 credit, maybe 2? Worst decision ever. Sorry Angel. I mean, I got an A, but it was hard.

And here I am thinking the biggest waste of time and money in college was an art history degree. It still is, but broomball?!? How do you have a sport class based on something that isn't even a sport?

When and where were you bartending? According to BLS figures from 2012, the national mean hourly wage for bartenders was $10.40 and median was $9.09- but there are some states without a minimum wage.

Regardless, it's a good thing they do more than just pop off bottlecaps.
