Its interesting, I'm happy I grew up in Michigan, but I'm also extremely happy I got the fuck out and have no plans on living there again.

The Best part of Michigan is the summer, with all the lakes goods times abound. Soon enough.

I really don't miss February-May, thats just misery. Just straight clouds and hardly any sun ever. However the fall is pretty epic. The sometimes rolling hills, the cornfields, the fall colors, the deer trying to commit suicide..., Michigan football games, the start of hockey, the brisk fall air, there are some really genuinely good things going on then.
Summer is cool. Being on the extreme western part of the eastern time zone the long evenings are pretty cool. I miss the sun setting at 1030. Out here in Colorado the sun always sets early because of the mountains.

Jesus, you still have Long John Silvers too? That went out of business in my town in 1995. I thought that place was unpalatable.

Fast food fish. Be still, my beating taste buds. I'm astonished Swiss Chalet hasn't migrated like Asian carp down there (Has it?). That stuff is dee-lish, you guys don't know what you're missing.

My sister is encouraging me to do food blogging.

My family has a google groups email and we email daily about everything under the sun, including what we're cooking that day. I post a few pictures on the cooking thread here but my family gets a better look. She says that she has a couple make up and fashion blogs that she follows that are very niche but that have a good following, and indicates that I could probably do as well, if not better. I already own a .com. How do blogs get traction and followers? I'm wondering if its worth the time and effort.

Detroit is such a lead Zeppelin. At least for me it is. It's such a tragedy what happened to that city when you look at its history, and I'm not talking about the golden years when Henry Ford trotted out the ultimate meal ticket. I'm talking the last 30 years, as I have known and seen it. Back in the mid 80's, it was the fourth largest city in America. And it has those gorgeous art deco buildings downtown, but of course you have to drive though fucking Detroit to see them, the murder and crime capital of the galaxy.

This is the city where when we asked for directions, people would tell us to not stop at certain intersections even when the light was red. It was a terrifying place to go into the heart of. Outskirts? There's some nice ones like Auburn Hills and then there's ones like Lavonia, which should have a giant toilet seat put on top of it.

Detroit's population has dropped by the millions over the last twenty five years. The automobile crash was the coup de gras. It has lost over 70% of it's peak population. You go there now, there are seas and seas of empty neighbourhoods with three-foot tall weeds in the late summer. The average price of a house in metro Detroit is now $12,300. It's third world shit like I have never seen in my life, and if they didn't have such successful sports teams there would probably be a big, smoking hole on the map of where it used to be. It's heartbreakingly sad to drive through. All I asked my wife last time we drove through it was "This is America??"

To try and describe Detroit is really hard. Where do you start? Where do you end? You can put it simply in terms of crime, white flight, corruption, economic lapse, but really, those things individually or collectively hardly describe what the city is. There are a few brave souls, a few brave entrepreneurs and idealist who have hope in the city, but realistically its likely hopeless. I guess its easier to say that it has gone to hell and most people who can have left. Aside from Detroit though, the suburbs do well, and really a large part of the city identity there.

Gotta say, I don't go there much but the"Detroit"that is spoke of most often is Pretty small, you brought up Livonia, that's not bad at all, same for most of the suburbs. And apparently the hipsters are trying to bring Detroit back.hahaha

Yeah couple of years ago the D was having auctions to try and raise money because the city is massively underfunded, they were selling whole city blocks with homes on them for less than 20K, the kicker? Nobody bought one.

And why would they? Crime and poverty has decimated the city, you'd have to be crazy to drive through the side streets, let alone live there.

Saginaw is the same way, along with Flint my home state includes 3 cities on the highest murder rate list, drug dealers shot some poor homeless bastard in Saginaw last winter because he LOOKED at them. Guy froze on the street for 6 hours before somebody called EMS.

That's where I shop, and only in Michigan. Commerce here should fly fucking jolly roger flags above their businesses. In Michigan everything costs 30-50% of what it does 1 mile across the river. It's so much cheaper to shop there that my wife will do day trips to Port Huron, pay the duty and STILL save a chunk of cash saved.

Flint is simply doomed. Detroit could pull their shit together, it has a sliver of hope. Flint is a cesspool and a future ghost town. We love going to Frankenmuth right across the highway from Flint though. Really cool town to see, an enormous selection of beers there, and the best chicken dinners god DAMN.

Shit you could buy a lot with a shell of a house (no copper) for under $500. As far as i know that happens every year in either August or September.

Its funny, the only thing I knew about Frankenmuth growing up was that they have the year round Christmas store. Back when I was younger (19) I use to love going to Windsor so I could drink, gamble, and see some titties.

Spent a lot of money at Cheetahs, Windsor rocks when your 19 and 20, that was back when you could cross with a driver's license.

That would be Bronner's, the largest Christmas store on the planet. It's seven football fields, and it makes Branson look like Shangri-La:

I only went over to Canada once before I was 21. Think I was 19, lost too much money at the casino and didn't even hit the titty bar's.
