Personally I prefer Revelstoke to Kamloops. It's a smaller town, but you're still in the middle of the mountains with some pretty amazing scenery, and a couple of cool museums to see (Mica Dam and the Train Museum). You can also go up to the Ski Resort and do the pipe coaster. http://www.revelstokemountainresort.com/lessons-activities/mountain-coaster .Get there early, as it lines up, but I've heard it's fun. By the time you get to Kamloops you're starting to get into lower mountain ranges. I've always found Kamloops kind of uninspiring. If you want to stay in an area with a pretty awesome lake. Drive another 30 ish minutes and book a place in either Sicamous or Salmon Arm. Sicamous is smaller but sits right on the narrows between Mara Lake and Shuswap Lake, Salmon Arm is on the Shuswap. If you're driving to Vancouver and if you have the time, drive up through Lillooet, through Pemberton/Whistler, and come down the Sea to Sky to Vancouver. You will not be disappointed. Once you get to Kamloops, stay on the #1 until you get to Cache Creek, then jump on Hwy 99. It'll take you about 8-9 hours from Revelstoke. Seriously drive this......it's awesome.
I haven't spent much time in Kamloops, Revekstoke is nice and there's some cool attractions but have you considered heading to Jasper from Lake Louise? It's about a 2.5 hour drive. From there you can take the Coquihalla (Hwy 5) to Kamloops. Jasper is honestly my favorite town in the Rockies. So many cool things to see like Maligne Lake, Whislter's Mountain (not to be confused with Whistler BC) and you're guarantees to get some cool photos of wildlife. Oh and that drive up the Icefields Parkway (HWY 93 north), I'm not the first person to call that the most scienic drive in the Rockies. I just finished up a two week roadtrip with my sister and bro-in-law, we hit Banff, Louise, Jasper, Kelowna, Van, the sunshine coast and the island. They'd never visited out here and Jasper was their favorite part of the trip. PM me for more info on Jasper or Revy.
Lake Louse (town) is nice, but Lake Louise (lake) isn't nearly as nice as Moraine Lake nearby. There's a tiny out-and-back hike around the lake (<2 mi) which is pleasant. For either lake, go super early to miss the tourists. There are some stellar hikes if you're into that... You can PM me if you want to know some of the hikes we did. A couple years ago we spent 10 days pretty much nonstop hiking in Banff and Jasper.
Pretty much this. The Prestige Harbourfront Hotel in Salmon Arm is very nice... right on the lake, nice restaurant... pretty good place to stop over. Kamloops is basically a big strip mall on the side of a mountain. Sun Peaks resort is a nice place to go and spend the night, and you can head up the tram for some sight-seeing, but personally, I'd just skip Kamloops and go for Salmon Arm. The drive up through Lillooet into Pemberton and Whistler is absolutely amazing. I've organized a ton of Porsche Club drives along that route, and they're always a favourite... great winding (but usually rough in spots) roads and absolutely beautiful scenery. The only issue you'll have is it's a favourite path used by rental RV's, so you'll get a bunch of really slow moving idiots that don't know how to drive an RV blocking traffic, which will piss off some people and make them do stupid things. Be prepared for that, but don't let it dissuade you from going. Oh, and only drive as fast as you can see and stop. It's not uncommon to go around a blind corner to find a goat-sized boulder sitting on the road that is primed to take out the front grill of your car. There are also some wild animals (horses, etc) that wander in that area. Seton Lake is a nice little spot to stop for a picnic, and you can watch mountain goats on the cliffs across the lake. Here's a video of the road so you get an idea:
I would like to point out that so far this week, my computer crapped the bed AND I just got a dirty phone call from God knows who, at the office. It's only Tuesday.

Today my high point embodied me being headbutt by a two-story tall giraffe. My wife and daughter certainly found it rolling-on-the-ground hilarious. The low point embodied attempting to hammer tent pegs into what appears to be uncut quartz buried under our campsite. I could penetrate the door in NORAD with by bare fists sooner than I could break ground here. This fucking place is lucky they don't ban beer because I'm about to steal a gas truck and pull a Lethal Weapon 3.
Well, after today, I can cross "seeing a squirrel killed with a shuriken by an enraged neighbor while it ate at his bird feeder" from my to-see list.
I once watched a drunken friend miss a rat with three of those, then be too afraid of the rat to go fish his ninja stars out of the bush.
Holy fucking shit, what the hell happened to my drunk thread? Where are the tits? You people seem agonizingly grown up. Jerks.
