There are literally people in Houston (and all of texas) with boats and trucks who have been waiting their whole lives for this opportunity to use their boats, trucks and trailers to rescue people. Wouldn't surprise me if Texas has the highest "large trucks and boats" per capita than any other state. Sadly, Houston is turning into new orleans. While the wind event is over here, the rain is really starting to come in. I just got back from the grocery store, which was thankfully recently re-stocked and men were helping women load their carts with cases of water, which was steeply discounted. I don't expect any power outages since the wind has largely subsided, but there's a 50/50 chance I get flooded in. Which means I will be visiting my neighbors (family) with my kayak.
I've never seen anything like this before. We are still ok for now. Here's a picture I saw on Facebook. My old street is completely sunk. I think all but one bayou has blown its banks and when that happens, the water goes right into homes.
Weather Channel is showing parts of Port A and Rockport. My favorite places to go shore fishing and bay fishing from my kayak. Is it wrong that I saw the drone footage and my first thought was "holy hell those houses are gonna make some amazing underwater structure to fish!!!"
This is nuts...my aunt and uncle's house has 2 feet of water inside, and they had to be rescued via boat by firefighters. I think it's time to move after this. F that noise.
Ouch... really sorry to hear it... hopefully they'll be OK and won't lose anything that can't be replaced with insurance...
The Texas coast is literally turning into a Katrina type situation. Of the various groups of people I know who live in corpus, port a, rockport, and houston (because in texas we got friends across the entire state apparently), I don't know of a single family who doesn't either have an immediate family member or close friend considered dead or missing right now. Sadly, the news is actually being very misleading about the extent of the drama, death, and urgency for emergency services. At least judging from the reports and pictures I've gotten directly from survivors who are there.
I can't believe that people are trying to give the mayor shit for saying, "don't call 911 if you're just trapped in your car but still safe... leave 911 for people who are about to die".
On a completely unrelated note, early reports indicate that 200% of the EPA is now resigning, signing onto a joint letter that reads "Climate change? Fuck you Trump!!!"
Note to self: Wizard of Oz jokes do not go over well when there are tornadoes in your area. Apparently Harvey is making the turn back into the Gulf, where it will turn into a hurricane (again), bounce off a high pressure system and do an about face to fuck up Houston (again). I would not be surprised at all to see it turn back into a Cat 1/2 and make landfall around Galveston area.
I saw on the news today that some low life cretin with a mini mart was charging $99 for a case of water. I hope his home is 12 feet underwater.
Same thing happened close to here kinda. A dude loaded up his truck with a few dozen cases of water, then went outside a Walmart that was sold out of water, setup a canopy, and sold them for $80 each. He was talking shit to everyone who confronted him about it (and video taped it) until the cops showed up and told him to just go away.
Nah Texans only shoot you once you set foot on their property. Dude did lose his job though after the videos went all over the news. Didn't even take twitter. Just a good old fashion local news shaming.
