I think most people who think wine events are full of the "snobby Sideways assholes" haven't actually been to wine events. I've been to a lot of wine tastings and the snooty jerks are definitely in the single digit percentages. Most people are just there to have a good time and enjoy their alcoholic beverages.

Even the ones I've met who are legitimate wine connoisseurs usually aren't uppity about it, and will answer stupid questions and point you in the direction of something delicious.

This. Whenever you see that shit in movies it's a caricature of what those events are like. 90% of the people there usually don't know the difference between a Cabernet Savingon and Pinot Noir, shit I come across as knowledgeable at them and I still can barely pick out the subtle flavors.

And shit, if you read the book Sideways he's WAY less of a snob, and much more of a drunk.

I know I'm a little late on the Miyazaki love, but I always felt Porco Rosso was one of his more underrated films. Castle of Cagliostro is pretty amazing too should definitely get more love too.

Did anyone here catch From Up On Poppy Hill? It was the one that he did with his son Goro. He still has a good way to go (if he ever could) of living up to the old man, but I thought it was a pretty solid film.

I was at a food truck event a few weekends back and there were a couple wine companies that had tables for tastings/samples and the girls that were working were all about getting people hammered. And they weren't dumb liquor company glamor models, they were dropping a bunch of knowledge that made my uninformed head spin. Talking about finicky grapes and secondary tannins. Add to that a demographic of people who go to said events to party, and I can definitely see it being a good time.

Depends on your lifestage. Actually aligns nicely with the "getting old" thread. My buddy works for Beam (well just quit today actually, like an idiot) and its a great, fun culture but it will burn you out. Cause its all events where you get hammered. Not a drink or two after work, but out till close to midnight, once a week, maybe every other. In your single/unattached 20s, its great. Ive tagged along to a few of the bigger ones and had a blast (Hello Beam-Maxim joint Halloween party), but I can see how it would get tiring. I used to get sick of going to vendor dinner and events sometimes when I was still in advertising, and alot of those didn't have a getting wasted component. Sometimes I just wanted to go home on a Tuesday night. I have a coworker now who used to work for Constellation Brands and he said it just became too much once he had a wife and a family. That being said, its a super interesting industry and its constantly evolving and changing.

I was worried, because of how boisterous Duke is, that the Bug's surgery would be a problem for us. I was afraid Duke would hurt him when he was weakened or doped up.

I guess I was wrong. A popsicle, two cups of jello, three bottles of water, and a fruit bar later, the kid is snoozing and the dog is watching.

Holy mother. 2 weeks left. We decided that we are leaving, regardless of job possibilities here. We really just don't want to be here any more.

All I can do is exercise to keep from being overwhelmed. We have 2 weeks left, no moving arrangements, no flight plans, no nothing. And there's nothing we can do about it til he gets his orders in hand (hopefully today or tomorrow). This is scary y'all.

I do not want to be in your shoes. I'm two months out, still don't have a house, he has orders but not on paper, and I'm leaving a damn good job to move and follow him.
No wonder I can't sleep. If I were in your situation I would have to be perpetually drunk to make it through the stress.

I'm actually going to be doing this next year. I've decided that after this tour of AFG, I'm going to get out of government contracting. I was thinking about what I would do even if they weren't paying me. The wine industry was the first thing that came to mind. Having lived in Central Coast CA for a couple years, I grew to love wine culture, and I have a shitload of friends and contacts in that business. I'm going to do my general ed stuff at a Jr. College while working a winery internship (which a friend already told me she'd hook me up with), then transfer over to the Viticulture program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

And to restate a point, anyone that thinks of wine culture as Sideways type snobs, has never been to an industry party. That shit rocks, and almost no one is that much of an asshole. Plus, a fuckload of hot girls in their mid 20s that work in tasting rooms.

Oh for fucks sake. He came home about an hour ago to tell me that there are MORE forms and paperwork that he can only now pick up and get signatures for now that he's gotten nearly all the signatures (command check out sheet has about 35 alone) on that one piece of paperwork. I swear to God. It's like a bad video game. You need to meet up and get a signature from, well it's looking like about 100, different people (lets call them NPCs because they basically are) who are never in the office when you need them, or out on vacation, or taking a long lunch, or just wandering around because fuck office hours, right? And every time you think you are almost complete you unlock a new level with more of the same shit. The usmc needs to revamp their EAS process. You can pcs/eas in about a month in any other branch but the usmc recommends you devote your last 6 months to the process. Yet, this same dysfunctional branch did not approve his shit until now. Fuck us, right?

He's still riding the morphine, which is good because it means he isn't hurting but it's bad because he's not hurting so he feels somewhat 'okay'.

The dog is unimpressed with his superhuman abilities and keeps glaring at me when I walk past.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping I only have one more sleepless night before it's just uneventful recovery.

Oh, yeah. And that. Not just ones that work there or are "in the industry" - but a tremendous number of hot, single, professional girls show up to these things, and you have a built-in ice breaker just asking which one they liked.

Sorry, I bow to the master. Please, tell me how I may enter into a joyless, barren marriage with a vacuous, emasculating gold digger?

You say it with sarcasm, but that just tells me you don't know what you're talking about. If they show up to this thing, then yes, it will.

If people are gonna mock sack for this, could we please start mocking every dumb call we've seen? You've got people who have put their children around addicts, people who have put themselves in a position where their children could be taken by the state, people who spend time in jail once a year, people lying to their family about what they do for a living, people who post naked photos of their siblings. Countless other stories where the situation is much worse. Same people that jump on sack are the same to jump on the no judging train.

I never posted (or had) naked pictures of my sister. I simply complained that she'd told me she was doing cam porn. In a related note, she's out of rehab now...

But then, I'm not making sarcastic comments while pretending to be the expert on how to keep your siblings out of porn.

So we've had two that were in this situation? I didn't even remember that.

If someone who posted naked pictures of his sister commented on the wisdom of posting a particular photo, I'd probably make a similar comment.

Just sayin' that maybe someone who couldn't see through a woman like that probably wouldn't be the first person I consulted about what women want. Nothing to do with whether he's allowed to make a mistake.

Yeah and she was hot as shit as I remember. Should have right clicked saved that sum-bitch. Oversights like that are probably why I don't get many call backs on job applications...
