Surely we are adults who can refrain from name calling and have an honest, open and respectful discussion. Uh....yeah. But I don't think it will dissolve into that. Yes, while much of the "story" is about the politics behind the criminalization and decriminalization of drugs, I think there is enough meat to it that people can play nice.
Go for it. You guys could pick the Communist Manifesto for all I care. If anyone acts like a dick they get a forced vacation.
And I'll put it up in the polls with everything else next month. I just wanted to lay out a couple things in case a book like your suggestion gets nominated. People pretty much know the rules when discussing politics on here, but it never hurts to emphasize them again. Really, I'm all for doing a book like this, and if it's a well written and thought out take it will probably be one of the more interesting book threads we've done.
I'm leaving for vacation on the 23rd so adjusting the schedule a bit this month. Poll will go up early and I'll start the thread when I get back at the beginning of October. So far we have: - Flatland by Edwin Abott Abott - All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Towes - Catch-22 - Joseph Heller - Under The Volcano - Malcolm Lowry. - Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs - Johann Hari 1984 got the second most votes, but I'm taking it off for a couple months so we don't repeat genres. Nominate anything else you want to see added.
Poll is up. Vote away. If there are any last minute nominations I'll add them tomorrow if I get on the computer. Otherwise this will be it.
At 3 weeks+ into the month and one response to last month's thread I'm going to skip November and give people more time to catch up on the books we've already done. We'll try again in December.
Alright, we're going to do a thread for December and see if it generates more activity. Post any nominations you want to see in the polls.
I'm just barely catching back up due to working 100 hours a week, but I should be good now. My recommendation for the next book: Living with a SEAL 31 Days Training with the Toughest Man on the Planet
There's just not enough replies to these threads for me to bother with this anymore. If anyone else wants to take over have at it. Sorry to shirk my duties, but I have no interest in running a book club where I'm just talking to myself.
No worries. Thanks for giving it a shot. Maybe something will happen a bit more spontaneously moving forward.
I've had similar problems with book clubs in the past, no big deal. I am enjoying the Lowry book though.
