Not to justify the killing of that man, but I've been very close friends with many phd students and them getting railroaded by their mentors like that is very, very common. A lot of people end up hating their professors/mentors for reasons like this. Taking credit for work that students do seems to be part of the game because it's exactly what happened to them when they were students.
So the plot thickens: The Associated Press has just reported the UCLA gunman had a "kill list" in his apartment. A woman on that list was just found dead in Minnesota. If this holds water, then what the hell is going on?
How can you have a serious discussion around this? There are bad people out there, and they do bad things. When the media zeroes in on one event and blows it up out of proportion, it's not "mainstream" or "happening everywhere" or needing explanation or requiring a discussion in society. I'd much rather talk about the 69 people that got shot in Chicago over the weekend than a fucking gorilla that got shot or some student that broke under post-grad pressure and went after the people he blamed. There's nothing of substance to talk about there, and no real preventative action that needs to be taken as a result... it's a statistical outlier.
Yea, sad but true. One gorilla gets put down and its a national tragedy and everyone has an opinion. 69 people get shot in the south side of Chicago and no one flinches. Speaks a lot to how people are and what they value and similarly what they don't value.
I think there is a two fold reason for that: 1. On average this year, a person is shot every 2 hours and 24 minutes in Chicago. 1541 total people shot this year in Chicago as of 7AM this morning. 2. Most of the time, no one, not even the victim of the shooting saw anything. The murder clearance rate this year is 19.4%, which means an 80% chance of getting away with it. Until the Chicago communities themselves become more proactive about stopping the violence, why would anyone else have a reaction other then apathy?
Makes sense. Problems in urban areas are also harder to summarize or capture than say the gorilla event. When things happen continuously it seems like people get desensitized to them. If the gorilla thing was an everyday occurrence it wouldn't make the news I'm guessing.
Exactly. It's not titillating, so therefore not "newsworthy". In a strange progression, more and more of the shit that appears in the news is becoming less and less relevant to what society should be giving a shit about and doing things about.
. Man, that dude was messed up. He kills his ex-girlfriend in Minnesota, then drives all the way to California to kill a professor, with the intent to kill another one? A crime of passion, in the heat of the moment, or panic during commission of a crime is a totally different mindset, than continuing to drive, without remorse, over a several-day period to execute somebody.
Goddamn it just keeps getting worse. Nothing but the same old bullshit as usually coming out of the NCAA. They're right up there with FIFA and the IOC as corrupt, scumbag organizations as far as I'm concerned. Unfortunately I don't know if there's anything that could ever get the NCAA to change its ways.
Maybe a level-headed, honest organization that's not influenced by money and power could get involved or offer oversight. Like, say Congress.
I completely agree that the NCAA should have no say in how colleges decide to distribute their scholarships. I'm against them outright paying college athletes, but if the school can afford it there's no reason they shouldn't be allowed to give out as many as they want. I don't necessarily think that just because someone is a student athlete their entitled to a full, free ride. Obviously, the lower division schools simply couldn't afford it anyway since their programs generate little revenue and they generally already charge less for tuition. In fairness, it's not just the NCAA fucking this up. Like the article said- Title IX, which mandates an equal number of athletic scholarships between male and female athletes is a federal law. Most affirmative action requirements are good, but some are seriously misguided. It's ridiculous that universities are forced to dole out an excess of scholarships in major sports like football, and then screw over male athletes in track and field to offset it. I could write an entire essay on how fubared and inconsistent the affirmative action programs for companies that hold government contracts are.
My problem with it is there's no clause acknowledging or leveling out the fact that some sports don't have a female team. So if you happen to be good at the wrong sport you're much less likely to get a scholarship than a girl. There's also the fact that male athletes are often required to have a greater commitment to their respective sport, although the disparity there isn't huge. https://www.insidehighered.com/news...y-they-devote-too-much-time-sports-year-round I agree with you that college sports shouldn't be about money. The fact that hardly anyone wants to watch the girls' sports doesn't really matter to me, but I don't see why title IX can't be contained to sports with a female equivalent and a separate title that applies to male only sports, or when the college doesn't field a female team. Edit: Or the government could just fuck off and not tell universities how to appropriate their scholarships.
I'm a stereotype sunday. A mix of german and native american (Cherokee). The only thing that offends me about the Redskins is their complete lack of ability or apparent desire to play the game of football. Other than that, who gives a shit? People who get pissed off about the indian thing (sorry, native american, we were here first white man!) are just looking for something to complain about and/or have a stick up their vagina that the indian quota was filled at the college they wanted so they had to get on scholarship elsewhere. If people can't get outraged about one thing they'll find another. Easy targets for stupid people. Shitheads don't understand things like "homicide rate" and "conviction percentage" so they turn to something that makes more sense in their tiny little brains. That's why Trump is getting so much support. He's running on the emotional beliefs of the lowest common denominator because unfortunately everyone's votes count the same.
Fresh off the presses: "Protesters attacked Donald Trump supporters on the sidelines of a San Jose rally Thursday night, in a raucous scene where a dozen or more people were punched and at least one woman was pelted with an egg. Protesters also reportedly grabbed Trump hats from supporters and set the hats on fire on the ground. " http://www.foxnews.com/politics/201...upporters-with-punches-eggs.html?intcmp=hpbt3 Who exactly is the lowest common denominator here? These protesters are the ones that are fueling Trump's campaign. Also there was this: "The mayor, a Democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter, criticized Trump for coming to cities and igniting problems that local police departments had to deal with. "At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign," Liccardo said." Really? The guy needs to quit campaigning because people act like feral animals? It's all Trump's fault and not in any way the fault of the people that taunt, steal, assault and vandalize? No personal responsibility? That's where this country is at?
I'm watching footage of them full-on chasing people down trying to escape them and beating them up. One rally attendee wanted no part of thenprotesters but he was blasted in the face with a cheap shot. He was bleeding and REALLY hurt. In trouble. And the fuckheads cheered the pussy who suckered him. Do people not realize you can kill a person doing that? Oh, right: they don't care, because it's the victims fault for not believing what they believe. Look at this fuckhead pussy media editor for voxdotcom. He refuses to accept this as anything but what's right: ...you bitch and complain how Trump's words incite violence while directly encouraging violence. Get cancer.
The violence against the Trump campaign supporters is almost daily now. Can you imagine if this was in reverse and it was the Tea Party doing this (even though the left pretended that they did)? The right has a mountain of its own problems, but the left wing is really coming off the rails. Its a problem when its become so far radicalized that they also occasionally protest someone like Bernie Sanders. Beat Trump in the battleground of ideas. Political violence will get him elected and those chickens will come home to roost.
There's a lot of truth to that. Take two different federal laws: (I'm not arguing for or against either one, just using them to show the dichotomy of the current administration's reaction.) Recently Obama mandated that every state will allow children use the restroom of their choice in public schools or they will lose federal funding. The individual schools, districts, counties and states have no say in the matter. Do it or else. Colorado and Washington legalized the recreational use of marijuana which flies directly in the face of federal law. The Obama administration's reaction? "Meh. If that's what they want to do, we'll ignore it." Some states are allowed to ignore federal law, while others are threatened into bending to the whims of the progressives. The government needs to be a bit more consistent then that.
