So you guys feel the Left changed to attack mode during the period of the mid-90s through the early 2000s? Well, the Left has been under attack from the Right for the entirety of modern history. In the 50s people on the Left were labeled communists and radicals, subject to blacklists and investigations by the House Un-American Activities Committee - which I may add that Newt Gingrich, who is being considered for a cabinet position, wants to bring back. The end of the Civil Rights movement saw the GOP making the decision to embrace the Southern Strategy, with Reagan using the stigma of "Welfare Queens" to help propel himself into office. Every victory the Left has achieved gets put under siege by the Right who will stop at nothing to undo them: Roe vs. Wade was over 40 years ago. Did the Right say, "Welp, we lost this one, time to move on"? Nope, the Right has been attacking it non-stop ever since. On another front, the SCOTUS made the decision to undo section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, several states immediately took measures to start disenfranchising voters, with North Carolina's since-struck-down Voter ID law the most egregious. The Obergefell vs. Hodges ruling immediately saw several legislatures try to (or successfully) pass "Religious Freedom Acts" because being able to discriminate against gays and lesbians is apparently just so important to a lot of people on the Right. Reread those last three things. Religious Freedom Acts cause actual harm. Disenfranchising voters causes actual harm. The 231 abortion restriction laws that have passed in just the past five years causes actual harm. And yet, people are painting the Left as the big bullies because lots of you feel hurt and attacked because you feel like the Left calls you stupid or racist. Yeah, that's totally equivocal to what the Right's done to the Left. My point is that while you ask the Left to try to understand a lot of the people on the Right instead of making perceived attacks against them, from what I can tell the Right makes absolutely no attempt to understand anyone on the Left - or that the Right does understand the Left but just thinks we're lessor, inferior human beings, if the actions the Right takes are any indicators. Like Aetius said, the Right asks for sympathy and understanding from the Left, but offers absolutely none in return. So I'll repeat what I asked of Kampf: What's the solution? The Left just shuts the fuck up and lets the Right do whatever it wants?
I agree with D26 and feel like that is the hardest pill to swallow for me. My sister ashamedly admited that she voted for Trump. I asked if she was so ashamed about it, then what was her reason for doing it. I voted for Hilary. Is she flawed, hell yes, but I can sleep at night knowing I voted for her. All I told my sister (and anybody else) was that you obviously have a right to your vote and your opinion but I want you to think long and hard about why you cast the vote that you did. That is all I ask. 4 For one, I hate to see Kampf feel like he has to leave this place. He is voicing an opinion that isn't my own but is at least speaking in a way that is trying to make the other side understand without throwing punches. Making him feel uncomfortable for those opinions certainly isn't the answer.
I think there are a LOT of people who voted for Trump and are upset by it, and I see it with a certain member of this board as a perfect example. You saw it throughout everything he said. Both were terrible, he expected Hillary to win, but he couldn't vote for her because of her corruption so he was voting for Trump. His logic was plain, but the same as many regretful Trump voters I've talked to in the past 2 days. "Trump is going to lose, so at least when Hillary crashes and burns or is impeached, I can say "well, I didn't vote for her," and feel better about themselves." Then Trump won, and a lot of people who "protest voted" for Trump assuming he'd lose collectively shit themselves, and immediately felt pangs of regret. Than they either had to defend their vote, or admit they made a mistake. Lots of guilt and anxiety followed. Trump's presidency isn't going to follow through on any of his campaign promises short of the dialing back of civil rights, because he can't end corruption and I don't think he wants too. I think he'll put all those tea partiers in charge. Palin, Christie, Gingrich... all those party insiders he claims to rail against will get cushy jobs. Pence will do most of the heavy lifting. I'd bet he'll be the first president to spend the majority of his time outside the White House, probably in New York at Trump Tower, because I don't think he'll even want to live there and be hands on. Yes, I'm still angry. I'm furious. I foresee the biggest dial back of Civil Rights in America since the end of reconstruction and the start of Jim Crow, because whether they can admit it or not, republicans directly benefit from minorities being disenfranchised, because minorities primarily vote democrat. It is easier to disenfranchise them than to court them, especially since they control pretty much everything now. I'm not saying it's a huge portion of Trump voters feeling regret, but I'll bet the number isn't insignificant.
From this point forward, no more politics in the Serious thread. I'm re-opening the other thread... do it there.
Without engaging in the politics of it, I would like to point out that these were responses to negative reps and PMs that continually insulted me and mischaracterized my positions.
I don't know if anyone outside of Georgia has been following this, but it's an interesting and sad case. Hot car death trial
Anyone who works with children I promise you is following that case. It is horrible. In the southern US it's a problem, not just under extreme circumstances like those in the case but what people would people would consider to be not a big deal. Leave your kiddo in the car while you run into the gas station for cigarettes. All the sudden the kid turns off the car, the doors are locked and it's 100 degrees outside. It's illegal to do that (I think it's a felony?), but people still do. And it happens frequently enough that it scares the crap out of me. What you see a lot more often than that too is people leaving their animals in the car with the windows cracked thinking that's ok. Yeah, well it's still a fucking sauna in there. The Harris case is sad. If the man was indeed guilty, I hope he certainly gets the punishment he deserves. If he is innocent, the death of a child, especially in that manner, is still horrible and sad and almost brings tears to my eyes thinking about it (I know the jury said guilty, and that's what I think too but I wasn't at the trial). Doesn't help me that the kiddo looks way too much like my son.
I have been hoping we'd get an update soon on the death of Philando Castile and this is good, I hope justice is served here: Police officer charged in fatal shooting of Philando Castile Also noteworthy:
I was going to bomb the political thread with this but I decided this one was where it really should go. Everyone should take a little over 8 minutes out of their day to watch this. "Nothing deep."
https://www.propublica.org/article/...han-thousand-bucks-hour-peddling-mega-mergers You pay someone $1000 an hour and they magically achieve research results that support your claim? You don't say....
That's not the cable company. The cable company known as TWC is owned by Charter. That is the movie end.
Wha-? Next thing you'll be telling me is that General Mills or Kelloggs funded research that whole grain is good for you.
Paraphrasing: It's better for 100 guilty men to go free than for 1 innocent man be executed. It's also better for 100 illegal aliens to be deported than for 1 illegal alien commit any crime against a US citizen.
Real top-notch policework going on in Standing Rock ND right now. Nothing upholds your sworn STH as a public servsnt like blasting people with a firehouse in -10 c weather. Fucking sadistic.
The only thing that pisses me off is that the protesters didn't involve themselves in the process that was put in place to deal with any issues months ago. http://www.npr.org/2016/11/02/50033...standing-rock-souix-sat-out-the-state-process But you don't hear about that, you only hear about how big corporations are fucking over the Sioux. So yeah, the cops are being pricks, and the local DA is trying to play the situation to her political advantage (almost criminally so), but the protesters aren't without some blame here.
