Another Portland parade cancelled. Thanks Antifa. "Portland police say officers have arrested several people near Pioneer Square during a May Day rally and march which they now consider a riot. Police said on Twitter Monday afternoon that anarchists destroyed a police car, damaged numerous windows and property, started fires in the streets and attacked police. Police were telling people to leave or risk arrest after canceling a permit obtained for the May Day event." When are people going to wake up and when they see these black bloc crews roll up, just tell them to get the hell out of there?
So rumor has it that this is going to be signed as a "religious freedom" executive order this week. A draft of the order that matched FADA pretty much bullet point by bullet point leaked in February so we'll see if and how much it's been changed by then, but the jist is that those with "the belief that marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, sexual relations are properly reserved for such a marriage, male and female and their equivalents refer to an individual's immutable biological sex as objectively determined by anatomy, physiology, or genetics at or before birth, and that human life begins at conception and merits protection at all stages of life" are above the law and protected by punitive actions based on discrimination, even when lives are at risk. This might be relating to organizations/companies, or it might be for any individual, or both. Truly an exciting week where it starts with us all learning why the Civil War happened and ends with us getting to see what the latest draft of this will be. Of course, there's already talk of it being blocked because the language specifically aligns with Christianity and it would be against the Establishments Clause, but maybe they've worked it out just enough in the latest draft that that wouldn't stick.
Spoiler: For size Spoiler: Again, for size This is how shit gets out of hand really, really quickly. Does the Antifa want civil war and FEMA camps? Do the Trumpers want it? That is the direction this is heading and that is what you will get if you can't figure out how to play nice with each other. Speaking directly to what this reddit section talks about, the Berkeley riots; very few people at that rally were racists or skinheads or communists or alt-right or whatever negative left/right label people want to use. Many of the people there aren't thinking and don't think because thinking is hard. Instead they listen to people and follow them regardless of where they are being lead because they aren't thinking about where their ideology leads. The funny thing here is that kids in Antifa aren't that different from Skinheads or ISIS for that matter. On the most basic level they aren't thinking, are doing what they are told is right and are willing to use violence to those ends.
Marine Le Pen loses to Emmanuel Macron. She was really, really right wing and her father was a (actual) fascist. I think the French made the right decision here.
I think the best part was how Macron's campaign baited the hackers in their phishing attacks with fake emails they knew would be released and Wikileaks released them.
I do enjoy that we've reached the point where we're congratulating other countries merely for not completely fucking up.
I understand your point - but Macron is not a socialist or an uber-liberal, at least not by European standards. Hes the moderate candidate. The hyper-leftism was rejected, too.
I think this is an important point... this is a nice change from left vs right, as it seems to be a middle of the road choice.
Well there's always another election, hopefully. But globalism for France is not the same as the US. The US's decisions will have a global impact whether Trump adopts an America First policy or not, it's just the role of the biggest kid on the block. Comparisons to China are a non-starter for anyone who actually looks at the details. France needs to prevent Germany from fully controlling Europe.
The comparisons between Trump/Hillary were way overblown. For one thing, Macron was never going to lose the race. He was leading by almost 30 points against Le Pen before and after the run off. He didn't enter the race with much in the way of baggage and Le Pen was carrying a ton around with her. A lot of his positions aren't particularly popular with much of France so it'll be interesting to see how he does. Le Pen was just totally unlikeable to most people and made Macron winner by default after the first round. One of the things that got lost in all this was that the left wing candidate was quite anti-EU as well, and as annoying as it is how recklessly people get labeled as communists he really was all but in name. Not even France is far left enough to put someone like that into the run off.
I don't think this has been covered very much at the national level, but one of the former representatives of a district near me has been on trial for robbing a charity of over $800,000. https://www.news4jax.com/news/inves...losing-arguments-begin-in-corrine-brown-trial It's been one of those trials where there is virtually no chance the defendant isn't guilty. First she tried to claim the money wasn't stolen. Then, she's saying her staff orchestrated a scheme to ruin her life. Instead of presenting an actual defense her lawyers only called character witnesses to the stand(everyone involved with the charity finances testified against her). The closing arguments were heard today and the jury is in deliberation. I hope she goes to prison. I don't believe she did anything all that different than many other congressman, but 70 year old woman or not it would be a pretty sad testament to our court system if a politician doesn't do any time in a trial with a long money trail and several witnesses testifying against her.
A former teacher of mine I think around a decade ago became the president of the school district sports committee and stole more than $800,000 to landscape his backyard with a pool, take his kids on ski trips and help bloat he and his wife's gambling habit. Basically he borderline wrecked sports for every kid in school for a whole year in this whole city so he could piss it away on himself. I think he only spent a few months in jail. Still ruined him, though. Is that temporary, fun party with dirty money worth the lifetime of misery and shame when you finally get caught? FUCK NO. Why can't these people see that? You can't trust anybody with money. Eventually enough of it dangled in front of you will turn you bad.
I don't know why people do stupid shit like that. 9 times out of 10, they're going to get caught. Not worth it.
And it's never poor people who do this shit. It's not for life-saving surgery or to start that dream business. He already was living in a big five-bedroom house in the west end, making over six figures a year easily. Douchenozzle extraordinaire. Fast forward to after he's in the paper for months as they guy who stole away sports programs to spent it on whatevs: His kids have no college funds now, he's divorced and probably working at either the one of two things when you're a heartless, rotten criminal capable of stealing from children: fast food or show business.
Posted March 31, and the interstate re-opens tomorrow. A month and a half. That's pretty impressive (read: I hope they didn't miss something.). http://www.ajc.com/news/breaking-ne...mmute-probably-sooner/ApPLoIUZT2ZaFv2ANNL04O/ Also, is it just me, or does anybody else think they're filming B roll for Top Gun 2 out in the Black Sea? http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...es-within-20-feet-n758091?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma
What could possibly go wrong? "On Friday, Sacramento launched a pilot program that put eight shared electric Kia Souls at public housing sites. Up to 300 residents can apply for on-demand access to the vehicles, with no charge for maintenance, insurance or juicing up the battery." Free car. Free housing. Free food. Free health care. Free phone. Free utilities. Why work? Thank God California doesn't get to dictate to the rest of the country how we should do things. I give those cars, at the very best, a two year life span. I've seen public housing elsewhere go from brand new construction to ruin within 5 years and buildings are a bit tougher than Kias.
It's amazing how despite this sweet sweet offer, the state of California still manages to get enough people working such that they generate more wealth and productivity than any country not named The United States, China, Japan, Germany or The United Kingdom, and is responsible for more than one out of every eight dollars generated in the USA.
The US debt is $19 trillion. California alone as of 6/30/15 has a debt of $1.9 trillion. The threshold for low income in Marin County for a family of 4 is $105,000. Low income is a 6 figure income. I'm sure they're doing just fine.
