Do you have proof for this Somali stuff? Specifically the chickens? Or that they were given everything they possibly needed? What does that mean? Cars, phones, computers what? I ask because people said the same things about the Somali population in Kansas. Well, it wasn't chickens, it was about goats. A lot of this sounds like urban legend and myth without any facts behind it.
If you ever get a mass immigration to your city of people from New Zealand, for the love of God, whatever you do, don't give in when they demand to have sheep.
My roommate became an EMT in Lewiston after college, circa 2002-ish. They went into these houses to see for themselves, they picked up the kids that were knifed or run over for sport. He dealt with all of that. I didn't get into this before, he told me stories of the violence between the location population, a population almost entirely of French-Canadian descended folks fighting with the Somali kids regularly. I don't have an article from the local newspaper on it, so what can I give you in it's place? A sworn affidavit? Separately given everything they need - housing, WIC, welfare, medicaid, social security disability, etc. etc. Things they never contributed to....that sort of stuff.
Are you a serial torturerer-rapist-killer who's victims include your own sister, but bigoted Murdererphobists won't let you hang around with children? Come to Canada where not only you can raise your OWN kids in your torture-murder stomping grounds, but you can chaperone their field trips! ...,Just like Karla fucking Homolka is doing right now, in Montreal. And after being encountered with this, the school doesn't seem to have a much of a problem with it. REALLY, society?!?! For the past two decades I've been hoping for some random to stab this bitch to death.
You know this might be a controversial statement but I am against sadists being around or having children.
Well, it turns out that this town is sort of semi-famous for it's refugee population. Here is a good read from April about it by the liberal rag known as the Associated press. "Maine Community Has Refugees and Resentment: Lewiston, Maine has seen an influx of refugees in last decade, which helps explain the rise of Donald Trump." That article references this fact sheet (pdf) by the Catholic Charities: Refugee and Immigration Services. The whole thing is worth reading. One key point I'll excerpt: The rest also directly rebuts a lot of your criticisms. I'm too lazy to quote and explicate it all, but generally it seems you're making a doomsday case out of this town using bad information. According to the AP article it wasn't even the government who brought them to Lewiston. They chose to go there on their own as the cost of living in Portland was too expensive. Does it cost taxpayer money to resettle refugees? Yes. Is that money what is breaking our country or the city of Lewiston? No, not at all.
Anyone else feeling numbed out to these small scale events? Yes they suck, but I'm not sure, I just find myself paying less and less attention to them. What happened all across the world is tragic, but what happened in London today had fewer fatalities than say Sandy Hook or Aurora movie theater. I heard someone say in terms of airline security, this lithium battery problem is a much bigger threat than what is on everyone else's mind as they cross through security.
In a weird way, even if using cars/trucks is more effective in terms of the casualties caused, it's almost less effective in terms of generating terror, because we as a society are so inured to vehicular homicide already. Six people were killed in London yesterday by a terrorist driving a truck. 82 were killed in the United States on the same day by regular old texting teens, speeding middle aged assholes, and geriatric cadillac cruise missiles (82 is a rough average of daily vehicular fatalities in the US). When I stand on a sidewalk I already position myself behind a telephone pole or steel traffic control device as a precaution against a car jumping the curb, and I'm not even thinking of terrorists. Adding terrorists to the mix doesn't terrify me any further.
Good point, when it comes to cars, a lot of people are kind of numbed out already, introducing firearms really amps up the terror equation I guess.
Car accidents kill fifty thousand a year give or take, but we as a society have designated all those casualties as "collateral damage" because we don't want to get to around on the back of a horse or camel. Automobiles will NEVER become an issue. We have two billion of them now.
I read more on the attacks in the paper. When I was in London I stayed where those attacks were, between London Bridge and Borough Market. Crazy to think on that same stretch I walked often while I was there a couple of cowards mowed people down with a van then went on a rampage.
Michelle Carter was found guilty. This is an important verdict for several reasons. Hard to believe that before this trial, encouraging someone to commit suicide via text had no judicial precedent for criminality. This trial doesn't do this, but I hope it shows that people who commit suicide are victims of mental illness rather than rational actors who chose to do such a thing. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/16/us/suicide-texting-trial-michelle-carter-conrad-roy.html?_r=0
I'm always careful about criminalizing speech, and extending the responsibility for someone's suicide onto others, but reading what she actually wrote I fully support the decision. She was actively encouraging him to do it, undercutting him when he expressed doubts about whether he should go through with it, cutting him off from any avenue of help he considered pursuing. She actively and knowingly used his mental illness against him to bring about his death.
Yea, in simple conversational terms, she wanted him to die and did everything she could to bring that about. I can't imagine how sociopathic someone has to be to encourage their supposed boyfriend who was physically healthy and free of any terminal illness, to commit suicide.
