That's also why there are so many "at will" states, where they don't need a reason to let you go.

There are also so many useless lawsuits around that stuff its no surprise that companies are gun shy.

For instance, Ellen Pao is probably one of the more recent, high-profile cases where she was fired for legit reasons but then claimed racial and gender bias and discrimination against them, and took them to court. She may have lost spectacularly, but still, it took some serious time and money to defend that suit.

True, but not-for-cause terminations will still entitle you to unemployment benefits in most states, while for-cause terms will not. EEOC violations are for-cause, so if you can make a termination for-cause when you were otherwise just going to let them go for some other reason in accordance with at-will employment, it can be in the organization's interest to do so. I don't disagree that fear of lawsuits is a part of it, just that it's not the only thing going on.

Absolutely. Almost nothing is as simple as it looks or as people think... there's always nuance and complexity around it.

    Yeah, a "bit" ironic.

Maybe it has to do with absolutely insane hiring practices. Below is Google's "Ideas & Diversity" team/joint task force. In the photo you'll notice con-artist nutcases Zoe Quinn, Randy Harper, Anita Sarkeesian and the clincher: one of Fred "God Hates Fags" Phelps' daughters. It's trigger central there:

    https://theoutline.com/post/2074/empowering-my-ass-capitalist-feminism

Apparently, it's not "preying on insecurities" if it comes shrouded in feminism.

This whole movement seems to have lost the thread: it's not about inflating the egos of pudgy lame women, or whatever inane nonsense reason some model takes naked photos, it's about the millions who are still considered property around the world and the millions here that are afraid of domestic violence, being disowned for their choices, and can't get the health care or education they need to make sane reproductive choices. For fuck's sakes, by this measure I'm more of a feminist than some twat buying empowering hand lotion.

Body positivity is a lot like psychics: charlatans using a lame con to grift stupid people.

Nobody should be proud to be fat, regardless. It proven unhealthy and I don't many obese people over the age of 60.

You know what? A rally of people carrying torches, giving Nazi salutes, and chanting Nazi slogans like goddamn Blood And Soil was never funny. It was especially never funny when their reception last night is compared to how a march of people holding signs and chanting "black lives matter" is met with cops in riot gear, anxious murmurs from here and elsewhere about how scary it all is and how they've gone too far, and live streams waiting for them to get violent because of course those people are going to get violent any second now, but these rallies continue to get waved off and belittled as something that doesn't actually mean anything and allowed to carry on with barely a comment. It wasn't funny this morning, when their numbers grew and they were joined by groups of armed men showing their support for white supremacy. It wasn't funny when David Duke said on camera that this was all in hopes to fulfill the promises made by Trump and how so far the most he's done to condemn this notion is to tweet "Charlottesville sad!" It's not funny how a car plowing into a group of counterprotesters - who are, again, protesting white supremacists - will most likely never be called a terrorist by this administration or any of the other people or media outlets foaming at the mouth about the threat of Islamic extremism, even if some of those people die. It's not funny how these people are perfectly comfortable showing their faces and don't even have the shame needed to wear a hood. These people aren't internet trolls in it for the lulz. They're the fucking modern KKK and it's not fucking funny.

I find it hard to get worked up over a couple hundred fucktards in the racist South and some idiots who "counter-protested".

The biggest issue I see with all of this is that they are being given a ton of focus right now... just ignore them. They are not representative of a large number of people, and I view them just like I do the Flat Earth, Chemtrail, and Anti-Vaxxor idiots... too stupid to know they're stupid.

    It's a real-world example of "don't feed the trolls".

The problem is these things operate in a pyramid-like fashion. A small handful are willing to kill for an idea, and they are supported by a small crowd who is willing to be violent for an idea, and they are supported by a large crowd willing to aggressively demonstrate for an idea, and they are supported by a community willing to organize and financially support an idea, and they are supported by a measurable fraction of the population willing to adopt an idea, and they are supported by a plurality willing to vote for someone who caters to this idea. If you're seeing overt violence on this sort of thing, you can be your bottom dollar that there are less visible, less overt ways in which these same beliefs are doing harm on a much larger scale. The vast bulk of the iceberg is below the surface.

I believe that shit is getting better, not worse. What you may be seeing is a sign of desperation that is a result of a melting iceberg, but it is being broadcast worldwide due to sensationalist social and mainstream media so appears worse than it actually is.

I believe that shit won't get magically better overnight, especially in your more inbred areas in the South... some people have to die (of old age) for some ideas to go away.

But again, I think shit is getting better.

Looks like it's going to stick around for a while.

I find it hard to believe that things are getting better when the guy who built one of the largest platforms for these groups is the chief strategist in the white house and the president gives a wink statement decrying hate on "many sides."

Edit* It's also to important to note that the car that plowed into people didn't come from the south. It came from Ohio.

It's getting better...for some people. For the people whose privilege (rightly or wrongly) is eroding, it's objectively getting worse. We are in the middle of a backlash to that, and the political sphere is stuck on "divide and conquer", with actual Americans too stupid to realize they are being pitted against each other for nonsense reasons.

I also think dismissing these people as stupid is dangerous. The most common group to perpetuate terrorism in the United States is the one marching, and driving into a group of people is terrorism in London or France, and it should be the same in Virginia.

Personally, I think ANYONE idealizing Nazi's or the KKK is the worst kind of human: that either should know better and ignores it, or is too stupid to see true darkness.

I'm mostly just shocked, disgusted and deflated that things have gotten to this point and no one is trying to lead these people to a better path, whatever that might be.

It's smart that they used citronella candles instead of real torches to voice the soul-crushing oppression that they face every day, that way they don't get ash on their Lacoste shirts.

People ignored the UVA torch idiots and roasted them in social media. You don't stop these people from speaking to piss them off, you do it by not showing up. They line their pockets by baiting people with a short fuse. And look how well it works.

Can't dispute their right to their speech or belief...until they start acting on it. That's the point at which they are no better than ISIS, Al Qaeda or any of the other far-away groups that our media posture as existential threats. I wonder what it will take for these people to see they are threatening their countrymen, and betraying all our values, especially our military values.

I also wonder how this will work when some of these younger people get....well, doxxed. I can't imagine being the face of an alt-right protest will make for a happy HR department, or a bright future.
