Especially considering when it comes to hate groups like the KKK, neo nazis and what have you, they are constantly trying to latch themselves onto other movements. They know their horseshit isn't popular so they try to involve themselves in other things; either by making it their own or just saying us too. If you let them take things because they misuse them you're just giving them power they wouldn't otherwise have. That, and they crave attention any way they can get it. I don't see much of a reason to give them any unless they're committing an actual crime, in which case just throw their ass in prison.
The best thing to do is grin and bear it. Unless of course grinning is now offensive and punishable by doxing and nasty Yelp reviews, so perhaps instead it's best to stand perfectly still and bear it.
So Chicago is over 500 homicides this year. At the end of July, Toronto (which is now bigger than Chicago) had 26. I just....wow.
Wait, are we just counting Bears and Bulls fans who get their hearts broken each year? Because 500 so far seems like an awfully low number this far into it.
I think at least part of the reason for trying to redefine the word entirely is because it's provocative. One of the big challenges now days is simply getting people to pay attention to the continued inequities that exist. Say something like "Institutionalized racism is the biggest issue facing black people today" and people immediately zone out because they don't care. But you say something like, "black people can't be racist against whites" and those same uninterested people start paying attention. Sure, you've got an uphill battle ahead of you in trying to convince people of your reasoning, but at least you've gotten them to the table. I'm not saying that makes it right, just that it's an effective tactic to get people to engage with you, even if it means that engagement starts off adversarially.
I guess my biggest question is, does it actually help anybody at all? I see it about like taking down the Confederate and other statues that the left finds offensive. Ultimately the only thing accomplished is virtue signaling, and in the statues' cases....a lot of money being spent that could've been used for something more productive.
And for me this approach has the exact opposite effect. I hear someone or some group say something like "Institutionalized racism is the biggest issue facing black people today" I might actually listen because that sounds like real problem that can probably have some viable solutions. I hear someone or some group say "black people can't be racist against whites" I immediately stop giving credit to whatever else that person or group is saying because it's such an idiotic and poorly phrased argument why would I bother even listening to what else they have to say? It's like if someone were start telling me "Well the earth is flat so let me tell you what's REALLY happening when satellites orbit the earth..." I've stopped listening because the base of that argument is already false, the rest is going to as well.
I think the jury is still out on how effective of a strategy it is. Trying to change the commonly held meaning of a word is a slow, difficult process - especially when the change is deliberate rather than natural language evolution. If after many years the idea that black people can't be racist toward white people gains zero traction in the collective cultural mindset, it will probably be discarded in favor of other, more effective looking strategies.
OK, this is just bizarre. In St. Louis tonight they are having a BLM rally, nothing odd about that. What is odd is it's a “White Allies Only” rally. Like back in the old days of segregation in the south.
I'm not really saying it's upsetting, just really bizarre since they used the term "White's Only" for a BLM rally.
Didn't some BLM folks just get invited onstage at a recent Trump rally? That's a viral video I haven't bothered to watch. Maybe they're returning the favor.
I have an idea of what the thinking behind this may be. There's an idea about privilege - in this case, white privilege - that if you're a member of a privileged group, it's your responsibility to address the problems/privilege your group has/has caused and not burden the marginalized group with that duty. Kind of a "you broke it, so you fix it" thing. So, assuming that's what's going on here, this "white allies only" protest is a message that since white people are the primary cause of race-based police brutality, white people are standing up to say it needs to stop. While this may be some noble thinking, that doesn't quite negate the fact they're stupidly using the language of white supremacy to try to get their message across. Something tells me this isn't going create the results they're hoping for. Also, what I just said here is the charitable guess. The reality could in fact be just exactly what it looks like.
Exactly this. As soon as anyone stops being reasonable in hopes of getting my attention I totally check and and could not care less about them. Talk to me reasonably and logically, with passion, and you have a 99% better chance of reaching me.
Hooo Boy is lil Kim pissed off. Maybe his overworked heart will finally give out before anything comes of it. "Trump has denied the existence of and insulted me and my country in front of the eyes of the world." In the statement, Kim says North Korea will make the US leader "pay dearly for his speech calling for totally destroying the DPRK." Kim said he is "thinking hard" about his response and that Trump "will face results beyond his expectation." The statements supposedly came directly from Kim and not one of his spokesmen this time. I like to imagine him stomping his little fat feet as he was ranting.
I honestly hope he does something really stupid that provokes an attack. Then we can just be rid of them. I'm sure it'll just be more bullshit posturing though.
I think I know what you mean to say by this, but that exact situation is what should terrify everyone. I just don't see how any type of military action ends well. There's 23 million (I think that's the number) people living there plus millions in South Korea whose lives are put at risk as soon as that happens through no fault of their own. It's easy to say when we are thousands of miles away that we should attack, but what then? I don't have the answer and no individual person really does. But I think a diplomatic solution with Russia and China is the only way that this situation doesn't end without astronomical death tolls. And I think Trump has too much of an ego and not enough patience to guide that process.
