You know what this all tells me? That despite all the hand-wringing about how there are so many problems with this country the vast majority of people have it pretty fucking good. Because if things were really as bad as people like to claim nobody would give a shit about something as insignificant as whether or not NFL players are standing or kneeling during the national anthem. People would be talking about the actual important shit that matters.
http://www.snopes.com/al-sharptons-1992-speech-urged-blacks-to-kill-police/ Lol get the fuck out of here with your bullshit.
Yeah. It's almost like our poor people aren't so poor and people who claim abuse due to race/religion/orientation, etc. have as much or more freedom than anywhere else in the world. Everybody has ice cream now but we are complaining about the flavor or it or that some have a cherry on top.
Are you unable to detect mocking sarcasm or have you never watched further than that clip to get some context or did you only read the one subtitle they decided to write within that clip or what
I've watched it and looked in to it. The basis is he was mocking people that say "Kill Whitey and cops" for not actually doing it. I believe that would be called agitating. Hardly a person that I would call qualified to advise anyone on race relations.
He was mocking people who thought talking about how they were just going to kill cops was enough of a contribution to help fight injustice when they don’t actually do anything that would help, like not even march let alone do any kind of organizing or mobilization.
Don't misunderstand. A lot of people who are making a lot of noise about injustices in this country are doing so because it's important to them and also very likely because they're suffering for the injustice they're against. But the people who froth at the mouth because some NFL players didn't stand for the anthem but then turn around and complain about how unfair the world is being to them? Yeah, not buying it. People who are actually suffering real injustice don't have the energy to get mad at a bunch of athletes playing a ballgame.
I think that what we're seeing by the hard-core 'Merica! types bitching about the kneeling athletes is mostly a result of the almost brainwashing levels of patriotism that is pervasive in your culture. Same goes for Pence's reaction by walking out. Or the girl sitting during the pledge of allegiance that got suspended (illegally). It's being viewed as a "fuck you" to America by most people. There's also a lot of "think of the soldiers" being thrown in because "heroes!" and you pretty much wipe out any real message or nuance that is intended. And then you have those that don't speak out and don't give a fuck and are just sick of non-football shit getting mixed in with their football, and you get the mass exodus that the NFL is experiencing, which is why Goodall is meeting with owners to change the "should stand" rules... because some of the vastly silent majority are leaving them. Just like some of us mentioned quite a few posts ago, those that are mostly paying for this shit aren't posting crap on social media, or taking a stand... we're just going on with our lives and making decisions that are impacting the finances of the sport, so they're responding. We didn't speak out and tell the NFL on Twitter how angry we were... we just said, "fuck it" and tuned out. And I think you're going to see more and more of that happening... social media is not a reasonable sample space for society, and if corporations knee-jerk react to the outrage-du-jour that is on Twitter and is being blown out of proportion by the media, they will find that they are separating themselves from the mainstream. Corporations more and more are learning that by placating that one pissed off Twitter Warrior, they're pushing away the non-warrior masses, and are way over-correcting their policies and message, only to find that they get confused and have to adjust back.
I don't get how anyone is bothered by it that isn't looking to be bothered by it. If you're a football fan that doesn't give a shit about politics, I don't know how it's affecting the viewing experience in the slightest. If you're turning on the TV any time before kickoff, you didn't drink enough Saturday night to begin with.
It still goes back to this: I don't give a fuck about what you think (insert actor, musician, football player name here), I care about how well you throw a spiral/cry on command/sing. If I have to start giving a fuck about what you think then I will do something else with my free time because I can get political opinion I agree/disagree with everywhere. As usual, the media aren't helping the NFL one bit because they just can't shut the fuck up about it and televise the game. When you are marginally still a football fan (like I am), listening to people with head trauma try to give serious opinion on anything is awful. I would rather listen to my two year old sing the ABCs for the 3,000,000th time.
Remember when they were in the fucking locker room while the anthem played? Pepperidge Farm remembers.... The NFL is declining for a variety of reasons, politics simply aren't among them. I know I've watched fewer games, and not been as diligent with fantasy. The lopsided games, the constant injuries (seriously, faces of the damned game itself like Watt, Beckham Jr. are getting brutally injured), and the constant scandals for the players combine to make it...gossipy and watered down. I don't give a fuck about the player's opinions, I want to know who's going to cover the fucking spread. This league has struggled to adapt to a new social media reality, racism, player's criminality, and the pervasive stench of a dying form of toxic masculinity (anyone who's visited Glen Burnie, Maryland during a Ravens game can attest to this). Hell, for my adult life, the Pats stood a 44% chance of making it to the Super Bowl....if you're a believer in parity, how the fuck do you address a dynasty? The reality is that as a form of entertainment, the quality is diminishing. Watching a bunch of old white dudes freak the fuck out about WHATEVER the fuck a 20-something black guy does isn't fun, relevant or interesting. This kneeling issue is a production of Bullshit Outrage, Incorporated, brought to you by sponsors such as "Please don't acknowledge our actual social problems", "Pat Tillman Would've Fucking Hated You", "What happens when the poor people start paying attention to things that matter?" and the Journalism Board of "The Longer This Is In the News, the Less of Our Actual Jobs We Have to Do." This is the same unanswerable, semantic argument around abortion ("when does life begin?"), gay marriage ("Is marriage a holy right between a man/woman?"), the military ("They are heroes, despite not helping a fucking thing and are above all reasonable criticism or accountability: cue country music"), our safety net ("personal liberty/responsibility versus Venezuelan socialism"). In short, fuck these fucking fucks.
Since you work out of the country, shouldn't you be listening to your two year old instead of the TV anyway? I love the anthem controversy because it makes it easy for me to figure who to defriend on facebook. Anyone that feels overly passionate about it either way gets the chop. As a person that watches a lot of the NFL. It's pretty easy to ignore in game. After week 1 they talk about it less and less. By the time the second possession starts no one is talking about it. I literally think about it less and less, week by week. This makes me wonder, are you all watching the NFL or are you watching the news about the NFL?
I'm just sick of having everything tainted with some political or social protest or message. Period. It's everywhere, and it's tiring. Just because I don't care about the message doesn't mean that I want to always hear the message. And it's not like that message is only being broadcast in a specific time slot... it's overshadowing everything. It's wearing down on people, and they're getting sick of it.
I have recently had the good fortune to be transferred home. That occurred several months ago, now I travel out of the country only every few months. Therefore, I have heard her rendition (and sung) the ABCs many, many times recently.
No, no, no. I go with: next time won't you kneel with me. Especially on Sundays. I might start sprinkling in "next time won't you protest with me"
Given how the Patriots and Red Sox have been playing, the politics has been a delightful distraction.
That's what cracks me up whenever you hear feminists or whoever bitch about toxic whiteness. The predominantly white societies are practically the only ones that aren't rampantly sexist. But that's all the white people's fault... or something... I'm really at a loss as to how people don't get this. Is the concept that some areas and times are inappropriate for this just totally foreign to you? Who doesn't understand that? Since when does something like that need to be explained to people? I get that the people totally flipping out about it are being ridiculous, but not bringing politics into every damn thing all the time used to just be common sense. Not that I would ever sincerely expect common sense from people in this political climate.
