Louis released a statement owning up to all the stories. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/11/10/arts/television/louis-ck-statement.html
Damn good start in my opinion, by C.K in owning up. Now he just needs to disappear for way more than a year from the public. Maybe just do some writing and helping young comics.
Not that it excuses his behaviour, but it's refreshing to read something that was a basic apology with no real excuses.
Bill who? I dont think this is something that Louis CK cant overcome, whereas Cosby, Spacey, Weinstein, etc. are (and should be) done forever.
I think the big difference, as alluded to by Louis, is that he didn't realize at the time the power his position gave him, and the different context that provided for those he was with. Since then he has recognized that and taken steps to try and atone for it, and has learned from it... whereas the others I'm hearing about (Weinstein, Spacey, etc) knowingly took advantage of that position as leverage to get what they wanted.
Although he’s gonna have to come up with some new bits I think..... Props to him though for doing an apology letter the right way. People are willing to forgive a lot, provided the person in question is “worthy” of forgiveness. I think Louis CK did as much as the public could have hoped for as far as showing genuine regret. He’ll rebound from this eventually.
Theres also got to be some fucked up personality traits that run through people of this sort of fame. I just think comedians are a little...different. Not that this behavior is ever justified, but I think a lot of comedians have some dark shit in their personalities that they reconcile through their comedy. Its quite possible that Louie truly had no understanding of his power dynamic, especially if a lot of this shit took place back before he was famous. I've listened to a lot of interviews with various comedians and something a lot of them tend to feel is that they either don't understand how famous they are or they don't think they should be. Something Bill Burr discussed in a bit he had called Gold Digging Whores, he talked about how most men never experience temptation on the level that famous athletes do. And that everyone who judges them for cheating on their wife with the maid(Arnold) or behaving like Tiger Woods has no idea what it feels like. I'm not saying infidelity is even close to the same thing as sexual assault, but the power dynamic is the same. Most comedians are like your average Joe Schmoe and might actually be tempted and have zero understanding of how to behave, especially if they have fucked up personality issues.
I would love to know who requires an apology aside from the women directly involved. Because if it involves anybody else besides them, it’s a bullshit apology.
Absolutely. I can only imagine the behind-the-scenes game film from someone like Kinnison or Eddie in his prime...
I'm not convinced he's not still cooked like a goose, but if anything is going to save him it's the (purported) fact that he stopped and tried to change his ways years ago before being forced to by public outcry. That said, the fact that he was denying the allegations and calling them rumors as recently as a few months ago isn't a great look for a supposedly repentant man.
I agree but I also think there is a natural tendency for people to self preserve. Especially if there’s a chance it might not blow up into something bigger. A few months ago, the Harvey Weinstein thing was starting to come to light publicly. I’d be willing to bet Louie was hoping it might just go away like it sorta did before. But now that everyone’s nuts are on the chopping block, it was best for him to own it. His will probably be the one quickest forgotten since his apology was the most honest and without much justification.
To be honest I've never seen his act, I know his name but that's about it. His apology is probably the most honest act of contrition I've ever seen from a public figure which tends to make me believe it's an actual apology and not a "Son of a bitch. I'm sorry I got caught acting like a piece of shit. Here's my apology." I hope the apology is as authentic as it seems to be and not just blowing smoke up everyone's ass.
The fact that he made personal apologies years ago to those affected, and that nothing since then has surfaced, leads me to think that he's not full of shit. Actions speak louder than words, especially historical ones.
Very true and I wasn't aware he'd personally apologized to the women. I like how the news overlooked that fact. If he really did personally apologize to them, that takes a hell of a man to do that and own up to his own past. I have a lot of respect for him if he actually did that before everyone was being called out for similar shit...that would tend to make me believe he's actually remorseful for his actions rather then just saying the words.
And it makes me wonder why the women are throwing this crap out there now if he’s already purportedly made amends with them?
