The only move theater I go to right now is ipic. Its more expensive, but I don't have to sit elbow to elbow with greasy assholes. Its quiet. The food is better. There is booze. They include popcorn and basic non-alcohol drinks for free. The seats recline. They give you a blanket. The video and audio quality are excellent. I'd rather spend a few more dollars for that experience because I don't go to the movies very often at all.
Wife and I just had a date night yesterday and went to see "Daddy's Home 2." The first one was pretty good. The second one though was definitely worth it to see. One of the better xmas movies I've seen in a while.
Nett and I have the Cineplex VIP here in town. Served at your seat, reserved stadium seats, all leather recliners with their own night tables, full bar...as nice as it gets in a theatre, WELL worth the extra cash. And you have to be 19 and older to get in so your date won’t get ruined by mouthy youth. I haven’t gone to another theatre since (except the Colossus in Toronto) because this place does it perfect.
I wish I had one near me, but the closest is Boca Raton, and there is no way I'm driving 6 hours to watch the crap Hollywood is putting out lately. The $6-8 a ticket is well worth it if there's one close to you though, especially considering if you're buying popcorn at a regular theater you're already paying more anyway.
I don't know about the experience, but I liked Thor. Entertaining, funny (Taika Waititi, the director steals the show as Korg) and you don't have to know all the previous Thor or Marvel backstory to enjoy it. There's a Matt Damon cameo, too and Hemsworth has a "holy crap, is he buff!" shirtless scene that your wife would probably like.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as Nett/Crown/Xray - If I'm going to see a new movie, I'm going to the theater in downtown Chicago that has reclining seats, food/booze brought to you, no one under 18, etc.. Pricy, but well worth it. The only times I go to a different theater are the smaller independent theaters in town that have special showings of older movies with special events attached. At one in particular (The Music Box), I got to see Nick Offerman introduce a showing of Highlander, a special showing of Withnail and I with a Q&A with Richard E Grant, and most recently I saw Suspiria on the big screen with a Q&A with Jessica Harper afterwards. Just to name a few. If the big multiplexes don't have a fancy setup or start renovating to something more modern, I don't see how they can compete. It's just not worth going.
Around here they are renovating the older theatres with leather recliners and offering bonuses like cheap admission and free refills. And they’re still making a killing. People love going to the movies. They’d rather pay a shitload of money than watching it free without going out. It’s certainly a business run well.
And I’ll still go to an Indie theatre. The VIP places won’t show “The Room” because they’ll get pissed when everybody throws spoons and footballs at the screen.
My favourite part of that whole things is nobody could tell if it was a guy or a girl... even the cop said, "she identifies as male".
I had literally typed that and deleted it before I decided on the bully joke. Figured it’d piss too many people off. Maybe I need a bully for that one....
Since localities have tightened up the LARPing protest, this is just an example of when internet comment section people collide in real life.

Wait, you posted this in the serious thread. My bad. So, what does that mean for old, computer illiterate people like me?
