When I heard the reason why it happened, I cringed. Talk about bullshit software made for/by government.

The TSA-type employee, upon signing off, has to perform a "Test Missile Alert". In order to do this, he has to go to a menu drop-down, and select "Test Missile Alert" from the items listed.

RIGHT BELOW that selection is, "Missile Alert".

    He accidentally selected the latter.

Talk about absolute horseshit... I don't blame that guy one bit. Anyone could have done that.

A little glitch in Windows, or a hiccup with his mouse, and you get what happened.

And somebody somewhere was probably paid millions of dollars to have some Indian offshore "programmer" write that shit.

10:30 Monday morning and I already want to go retreat to my shop and drink.

Could happen to anyone. But, as you point out, shouldn't have. Even my tablet solitaire game is like "are you sure you want to quit?" Maybe add, "are you sure you want Missile Alert" in there.

    Welcome to bullshit government spending.

As an IT pro, when I see how much government spends/wastes on contracts for stupidly simple things, I think criminal charges should be handed out.

Now a false broadcast of an inbound missile attack occurred in Japan. Huh. Somethings up.

    *Puts on tinfoil hat*

I think its a little too coincidental for there to be two of these in 1 week. Could be one of a couple different scenarios:

    1) Its really just an accident and a coincidence that it occurred within a week of the Hawaii one.

    2) The US and Japanese are stress-testing their missile warning notification system to gauge how it works with modern technology and the public's reaction.

    Unlikely, by Maybe:

    3) NK really did fire a nuke at Japan and the US, which were intercepted over the ocean somewhere and its being covered up since they dont want the technology de-classified. Unlikely because missile launches are detected by satellite and multiple countries have that capability, so it would be a massive conspiracy.

I believe 100% that the one in Hawaii was pure end user action.

Look at the ACTUAL program that does the tests or send the real alarm:

No, "are you SURE you want to send the alarm?" pop-ups... no nothing... you single-click that one link and the alarms go off.

I bet North Korea has better UI's on their alarm/launch apps.

I've stopped being surprised at the extreme lack of knowledge and security for things that you'd think would be.

Especially in government. And usually because they are union IT shops.

Not just in government. A few friends of mine in IT have told stories about large companies with admin passwords like "password", or huge multi-million dollar plants being run with computers from the 90's on Windows 95.

One buddy told me he was hired by a company where the IT department didn't have any representation on the board and the VP's thought it was ridiculous that they spent $X on IT when every time they went by the office those guys were just sitting around: So they just cut the IT budget and laid off the department. They learned pretty quickly that those guys actually did do something once the network crashed.

I dunno, maybe obstruction of justice is not only legal in California, but also strictly enforced.

It's not obstruction of justice, it's a federalism pissing match. California has passed laws that basically restrict federal immigration enforcement activities within the state to only what they have the legal authority to do. The most relevant aspects of the law are that employers cannot give confidential employee information to federal authorities without a warrant, and they cannot allow immigration enforcement officers into non-public areas of the workplace without a warrant. It's basically the state equivalent of a "got a warrant?" response to the cops.
