Interesting study on the deteriorating mental health of teens and the correlation with the rise of social media. https://theconversation.com/with-te...over-five-years-theres-a-likely-culprit-86996 Obviously, correlation does not mean causation, but it's a really good indicator to "hey, look over here".
They're not allowed to "turn it off" anymore. Used to be you went home and whatever bullshit you'd been dealing was left at the door, but now it follows you right to your bedroom. Grown celebrities lose their minds at the loss of privacy and always being "on", I wouldn't give the average teenager a single chance in hell of navigating unscathed. The only way to win is to never play, but tell a 15yr-old to ignore social media when all his classmates are on (and probably talking about him) having a good time cliqueing.
Jesus. People are truly fucking stupid. "A British YouTuber has been criticized for a video he's made pretending to throw acid on citizens. Arya Mosallah, a U.K.-based YouTube star, doused people in London in the face with water. In the video, Mosallah runs away as his targets scream in horror." But of course, he's the victim in all of this: "Mosallah released a video claiming the media was “slandering” him. “You’re (the media) crying over one video that was a joke and was never meant to be for these old boring people.” That's some hysterical shit bro. Maybe you should pretend to shoot people too, that would be a barrel of fucking laughs.
The employee who sent the missile warning in Hawaii did not hit the wrong button. He meant to send it, believing they were actually under attack. Also, apparently there is an "Are you sure?" button involved: "The employee followed emergency protocol and transmitted the “live incoming ballistic missile alert to the State of Hawaii,” selecting “yes” when reaching a page asking: “Are you sure that you want to send this Alert?”"
Well, that kind of explains why he wasn't cooperating with the investigation. I bet he wasn't paying attention, or was napping, or something, that caused him to miss the "EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE" part of the message.
Does all of our missile defense run on this same procedural quality? Seems like the type of thing more than one person should be required to sign off on prior to sending out.
I mean, if one person can send it, there's already a major flaw. When the system asks "are you sure" for something as important that, that should require a second person confirmation.
The dude got fired. I find this a bit troubling: "During the investigation, Oliveira said the employee, who had worked at the agency for 10 years, had a history of confusing drills and real-world events. At least two prior incidents had occurred, after which corrections were made and the employee was counselled." Why was he in charge of any buttons?
Sounds like it but haven’t read up on it completely so I’m not sure whose jurisdiction this falls under. Is it part of the military or is it up to each city/state/town to set up their own warning system? A bit tongue in cheek with my response but if you step back I think it’s a pretty big fuck up not only on an individual level but also an institutional level for not having a better system in place that wouldn’t allow a single employee to do something like this whether through a mistake or because of malicious intent. Just seems like the type of thing we should have somewhat of a standardized system and protocol for.
Yeah when I was in Maui and there was a 4.6 earthquake and we all went scrambling while sirens went off and tsunami warnings, only to have authority figures (like hotel management) tell us “it’s just a drill”.... take my opinion for what it’s worth (on the Internet: nothing) but: Hawaii needs to get their shit together.
If only this were their only high visibility problem https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/21/...&gwh=71D84B68C274E7A831134FC939219DC2&gwt=pay
What I'm getting at is that its function is to alert the municipalities through their early warning system, like a tsunami, not the actual missile DEFENCE system. It's not like there are inbounds that Cheyene Mountain have detected and they aren't going to do anything until bumfuck here clicks on that URL in his browser.
I work for local government, this kind of fuckery goes on daily, it is damn near impossible to fire people. We have a saying, “city fired”, this is where someone who should lose the employment they have are transferred to a different department. HR requirements for firing someone are so fucked that we just shuffle people around. I am in a small management role and have been working with my immmediate two managers to fire a mechanic for 18 months now, the best we have have gotten from HR is a “letter of concern” which means the next time we catch him fucking off he gets three days off.
