Outrage Media. Slacktivism. SJW's. Those were terms that weren't familiar before the rise of social media. This place we all met each other on has given power to the powerless. Back in the day, if something in society bothered you you either took true activist action or you shrugged it off, ate a tiny piece of crow and continued living your life. Now you can get a stranger fired from their job --instantly-- because they typed something that pissed you off. We will boycott your business. Blast you on Yelp. Threaten your female employees with rape if you let this person work for you one second longer. How dare you disagree with me. Social media has awakened this simmering ego in these frail people who want to take their mood out on the world because no one listens to them in real life.

The fact that the Internet gave power to morons has a nasty effect on society because too many people believe everything that they read. To back up your statement about white cis males always being wrong, here's a post from a moron with hundreds of thousands of followers who clap like circus seals whenever she says anything:
    image.jpg
..you can't call yourself a feminist if you don't know what feminism means. Having an army of morons hanging off the word of another mpron has worked out exactly zero times in history. They have the power to, and DO ruin lives, meanwhile all these celebrity activists are doing is bilking their idiot white knight followers televangelist-style. And if somebody calls them out or stands up to them, they sick the dogs on them.

People can no longer care about all the people who like things the way they are because they fear too much the one person who doesn't. Too many people nowadays refuse to control their feelings, instead they expect the people surrounding them to bend over and do it for them.

The same "logic" applies to racism. You can't be racist against white people because white people have power. I could maybe see a claim that racism against whites doesn't matter, since whites have the power, but to say it doesn't exist is batshit. I also understand words change over time, but a word with a clear and concise meaning shouldn't change so suddently.

    Fuck this noise.

EDIT: Wow. I just read the article from Seventeen magazine ....you know, the magazine for teenaged girls?

Holy shit. They said the parents and other students were "Misinformed." And then there were the comments from girls after the article, most in support of this crap and attacking the girl that dissented...this world is going to shit in a hurry.

I have no idea why people are so invested in the genitals and bathroom usage of total strangers. But then, at some point I assume we'll finally just have unisex bathrooms and stop tying ourselves in knots over the dumbest things. Or, as someone once suggested, a urinal room and a full stall room so you had an expedited line for people just wanting to piss.

The recent thug one that has come up recently baffles me. It seems the only people who think thug=black are the ones complaining that thug=black. All those memes with white protesters vs black protester were such shameless horse shit. I'm sorry, did you forget every white union protester in history being called a thug? And what about all those OWS thugs? They were called thugs with total disregard to whether they looted or committed any violence, and that's just dandy for you. No wait, never happened...according to you. However, when someone protests by burning, looting, even shooting at people, and they get called thugs, that can ONLY be because of racism. Give me a fucking break. There have been several articles plastered over the internet dissecting this 'truth', and they are without fail complete utter bullshit.

The only time I can actually remember being offended though was a Chris Rock segment where he started with this bit that went "White people got all their money from killing people. Killing people's kids. That's the only way whites got their money." HAHAHAHA. Gee, that is clever. What kind of inbred moron thinks that's funny?

I mainly know her as that crazy, crazy woman who raised a bunch of money for a project on sexism in video games. Holy shit does she suck. I'll admit I'm a little ashamed I sometimes watch this guy's videos, and he's certainly no one to admire either, but his rants of the insanity of SJWs gone wrong can be pretty damn funny. The one on Anita Sarkeesian highlights some her powerful contributions to the modern dialogue.

Are there any examples of good feminist article/spokesperson/twitter/video or racial commentary you guys would like to provide? Just think it might help the productive conversation as this thread has been going so well. 100% serious, not being sarcastic.

Seconded. Lets steer this away from just posting links or articles of sexism/racism/feminism/etc.that you want to scoff at, thats not what this thread is for. If you find one you want to legitimately discuss, fine. But I dont want this place to just be "Look at this article I found about some fringe lunatic, amirite?"

Here's something thought provoking: The Best Map Ever Made of America's Racial Segregation Here's a link to the map itself, so you can check out your area.

Obviously we know it still exists today, and we know what it means, but the degree to which some cities are segregated (including my hometown and other randoms in the state) was very surprising to me after seeing it laid out visually like this. It sheds new light on something that may not have been as easily grasped before. It would be even more interesting to me if there were voting and school districts, etc. laid over the map too.

It's worth pointing out that an ever increasing percentage of black Minnesotans are first generation immigrants. When you're from Somalia, deeply religious, and don't speak the language very well it's not really strange that these communities are somewhat isolated. Not saying geographical segregation doesn't exist for other reasons, but that is a pretty big one.

Dog-whistling is absolutely a thing that exists: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog-whistle_politics

For a historical example, here's Lee Atwater basically admitting to it with regard to the Southern Strategy:

For most contemporary uses, especially when it comes to discussing social issues, 'thug' is coded-language for 'black person' in a lot - not all - of cases.

Yeah, and that has nothing whatsoever to do with popular black culture's beautification and embracing of the word and lifestyle.

    Thug.jpg

What the hell is wrong with people? The word thug meant a ruffian. Tupac got a tattoo and now suddenly it's a fucking trigger word meaning vaguely masked racism? Screw that. I'm to old to keep up with all the recent implications of every Goddamn word in the English language.

You know what I find offensive? When my company hires a bunch of temps and I hear the word "Nigger" all day long. Every single time I hear it, it's said by a black person. "Nigger, what you doin?" , "What up Nigger?"., "Nigger you ain't got your food yet?" and on and on.

So which word is offensive? Or does it depend on which race is using it?

To me, "thug" is synonymous with "piece of shit lowlife"... and it's got absolutely NOTHING to do with skin colour, regardless of what ethnic group tries to co-opt it for their own use.

No, it isn't. I'm sure there's some idiots who use it that way, but in modern American culture it means what Nett just posted. I'm not going to avoid using a word because some jackass might perceive it a certain way. Seriously though, the whole thug=black thing didn't originate from actual prejudice. It originated from certain people wanting to bury anyone who disagrees with them in racism.

We need a major war or something, some major event to shake up the social mental retardation going on right now. How many hours are we (as a society) going to spend debating literal semantics?

For those who don't think thug isn't a racially charged word, you can listen or read this, I'll quote some things below, for the tl:dr.* Look people aren't complaining about white players in the NBA getting paid more than black players, because that isn't a problem. When an entire group of people are saying "There is a problem with this word 'thug' we should look at that." Saying that it isn't a problem is an issue, when there is smoke, you best believe there is fire.

Now, black people using the N-word. I just went through through databases of the major languages in Africa and no version of the N-word is in there so it had to be taught to black people somehow. Let's check off that historic fact. Now let's get to the Tupac reference and tie in the use of black people using the N-word.
Now my real tl:dr and my last post on this topic because we keep coming back to it at the wrong ways is very simple. Black people were taught and forced to use language in a way that was coded so the slave owners or white people didn't understand what they meant. So they called each other the N-word so the slave owners didn't think they liked each other or were congregating. I don't think I need to link the systematic approach of how slave traders broke up families and tribes so they couldn't organize to support that previous statement. It's how we arrived at the now very common slang of using "bad" "mean" "disgusting" "sick" to actually mean positive descriptors "good" "nice" "healthy" "awesome."

Any time anyone brings up the whole "Well black people say it! They brought this on themselves!" I'd like to quote an article, keeping in mind the first quote from up above.

I'm not saying there isn't racism, so don't put words into my mouth.

What I am saying is that just because you think "thug" now has some new, special, racially-charged meaning doesn't mean that it does for everyone. Who are you to say what a word now means? I don't care if a small group of people suddenly say "red is blue", that doesn't magically make it so. Talk about fucking entitlement.

if you start using that word in that new manner, well, that's on you.

Until then, go read the generally accepted dictionary definition of the word and show me where it denotes black guys in a racially derogative manner.
