There are already city police, county police, state police, highway patrol, transit police. public safety officers, etc. Deputies and sheriffs have no use. They’re the worst form of police your county has, and they answer to a corrupt politician instead of a chief. Consummate fuck-ups who are constantly being routed for criminal activity, and yet USA’s GOP will not stop pushing this ridiculous practise as a national agenda. It’s a very shitty, ass-backwards and VERY humiliating form of law enforcement for you guys.
That sheriff guy was an idiot. That's not the way it works where I am, but I am in a rural area. The cities have a smaller Police department and provide law enforcement for the City only. The Police chief is appointed by the elected Mayor. The county has a Sheriff's department, and the Sheriff is an elected official. The Sheriff is responsible for law enforcement in all the unincorporated part of the County, which is where I live. Our county Sheriff is well-liked and does a great job. Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River and has 159 counties (2nd in number only behind Texas), and most of them have City Police and County Sheriff. There is a separate Georgia State Patrol, but most of what they do is on the interstate system. I don't know any counties that have all that litany of departments you named. The 2nd-tier population cities Columbus, Macon, Athens and Augusta all have consolidated governments, so there is only a Sheriff's department and no City Police. Savannah has fought consolidation, but doesn't need to combine services like the others, because their City limits area and demographics are completely different than Columbus, Macon, Athens and Augusta.
