And this motherfucker is going to be impossible to find until he makes a mistake himself. I’ve no love for the RCMP, but searching our country for a killer on the run is a logistical nightmare. It isn’t hard in Saskatchewan to go on the run. Farms are everywhere and many of them don’t properly secure their fuel or homes.
In regards to the RCMP, this being native-on-native violence does not exactly motivate them to do their jobs. Rampages and dealing with First Nations are the top two things that they are abject failures at.
My neighbor works for the railroad. It was very eye opening hearing of some of the specific practices of the company. The railroad somehow maintains some special classification that gives them the ability to enforce certain practices they wouldn't be legal anywhere else. They have zero federally mandated unpaid sick days and can be fired for taking off for an appointment or when sick. Their ability to be off is dictated by an algorithm, and they cannot check whether they can take off first but can be penalized for taking an off day after. Also, there's problems about pay raises or COL adjustments- they'll give a small raise and then change health insurance so overall take home is lower that before the raise.
I mean, we should electrify our rail system. We're running diesel-electrics a good portion of the time anyway, just cut out the middle man.
I thought the diesel were actually pretty efficient and really only burned fuel starting up. In terms of pollution vs cost to change it seems like there's a lot of other better targets to hit first. This is me repeating something I read from a discussion elsewhere. Do you have more info on this topic?
a coworker and close friend, her husband and son are both very high up in two of the companies for the southwest region. She just told me her husband has 5 weeks of vacation and 10 personal days he barely gets to use. Said he has to fight hard just to use them, and that he might just retire a few years early. Unsafe working conditions, overworked employees operating on little sleep. A very dangerous environment overall. Never mind the hiring issue and issues with pay and taking leave. I’m generally not a fan of unions, but the railroad companies can fuck all the way off with this one.
He gets a lot of vacation, even though he can hardly use it. My neighbor got fucked. The company laid off a fuckton of employees maybe 18mo ago or so and then rehired about a year later. Not only does he get some paltry number of days, he was reset to 0 and lost seniority.
Crisis averted. After 20hrs of negotiations, deals have been struck. Biden personally called in to facilitate a deal. Now the unions need to adopt the resolutions. https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/15/business/railroad-strike-averted-tentative-deal/index.html
