The news stated it was an F-22 which means either a radar guided AMRAAM or infrared Sidewinder. My money's on a sidewinder based on the distinctive smoke trail.
I saw some speculation that the missile didn't have a warhead. It's possible (most don't have a warhead when launched at drone targets) and there's no distinct warhead explosion at the intercept. The lack of a warhead makes sense as it would completely shred the balloon's sensor payload. It'll be banged up from the drop into the ocean, but we should still be able to gain information.
Massive earthquake in Turkey. Wreckage is giving me serious 2011 Tsunami vibes. Hundreds of thousands dead I'm sure. I know someone who has family there and fortunately they're all alive and accounted for, but..... fuck. Like entire cities are just flattened. Rescuers cannot get to them, because those rescuers are either buried themselves, or dead.
Unlikely to be that bad; water does what collapsing buildings can't. Still, it'll be bad. Current death toll is a little under 6k, with experts speculating it could reach 20k when the counting is done.
Usually the death toll peaks after day 3, with many of the missing assumed dead. That hinges on things like reunification programs functioning, having ample S&R teams, and communications infrastructure being restored in hours not days. Turkey isn't bad at this sort of thing, as the military is leaned on heavily. Winter and logistics are going to be constraints, and it's not like there are thousands of folks ready to go to Turkey or Syria for disaster reasons. There's some fuzzy math on causes of death as an indirect result of the earthquake (medicine shortages, lack of electricity), but I'd say 20k is fair, and I'd be surprised if it hits 25k.
I do like Greece and Turkey's mutual earthquake diplomacy. Basically they've agreed to help each other with earthquake relief regardless of how bad relations are between the two countries otherwise. I'm just imagining a bunch of Greeks walking into Turkey right now with a bunch of supplies, ready to help, grumbling the entire time about "those damn motherfuckers I'll save their life I swear those fucking bastard idiots gonna help rebuild and get them back on their feet those fucking..."
