Remember, offense is always taken and not given. So when somebody says they take offense to something you say, tell them you're welcome for the gift you've just provided them.
Few years ago I was at a Halloween party and a black dude showed up in a KKK costume. It was awesome because some people have a sense of humor and realize that if something pisses them off they always have the right to just leave the room.
Look at who these people are crying about. It's not a white supremacist. It's not a religious nut preaching sexist subjugation. It's a Harvard grad who is now (ahem, was) a professor of childhood development and education at Yale. Did she preach segregation or sexism? No, she asked the students to stop coddling each other and view college as a place for freedom of expression rather than repression and they fucking lost it. This is your battleground now? This is your righteous crusade? You have fucking failed as an activist and as a human being.
I agree. In the spirit of ensuring no one's costume has any chance of offending someone, just go naked and you don't have anything to worry about!
The great thing about being white and/or male is that when you get all pissed off at someone saying something about white people or male people or - gasp - daring to call you "privileged," it's not "getting offended" it's "expressing your beliefs about why you disagree with something" and everyone is supposed to take it seriously.
How do you know? Are you white or male? Where does this insight into what it's like to be white or male come from?
I think part of the frustration is being white, and male, and being blamed for every fucking thing that's wrong with everyone else, when I just look around and think to myself, "what fucking privilege?" Are there issues, of all kinds, such as racial and gender? Absofuckinglutely. But quit fucking blaming me personally for that shit all the time. My ancestry is traced from poor Scottish farmers that immigrated into Canada to escape their own persecution and poverty, and then busted their asses farming to get where we are today. So tell me again how I'm to blame for the shit you're going through, or how I'm to blame for some bullshit slave owner from the south generations ago, just because of the colour of my skin. I fully agree that there are problems, and willing to work towards solving them, but so much of this is stuck on "blame the white dude" without having anything beyond that... and at some point I stop giving a shit. So "have a dialogue" all you want, but when that dialogue focuses on nothing but blaming me, then don't be surprised when I check out and tell you to go fuck yourself. Just sayin.
It's unpossible. Hysteria is a feminine trait. There is no emotion attached to these posts, only simple questions.
What these people are offering... it's not a solution to anything. Being offended is the beginning and end of it. Their complaint to the university involved saying they wanted to celebrate the holiday free from these issues. Most shameless lie ever? In line with Nett, my family came over as broke as fuck indentured servants fleeing persecution. I'm sorry it's not as terrible as riding the slave trade ship. But do you know what that has to with being a modern black student on a university campus in desperate need of a 'safe space?' Not a fucking thing. Audrey, you're not making any kind of argument at all. Just a vague accusation of white male privilege, and frankly it's both lame and disingenuous. If you want to argue why the protesters are right, go ahead and make your case. I certainly hope you can do it better than Parker did.
For what it's worth, audreymonroe's post followed by Nettdata's post was the funniest fucking thing I've seen on this board in ages. Not sure if nett was being serious or if you two just planned that, but it's honestly great either way. Oh and the reason headdresses are offensive is because European-Americans who colonized in America tended to...you know...murder, rape, steal, systematically oppress, and generally assfuck the Native population so thoroughly that little remains of their authentic culture and gene pool today. If you want to be another white person who steals another thing from a Native culture after you've DIRECTLY benefitted from the loss of their land and way of life, then by all means....be that asshole. But don't for one second think it's okay with anyone who has a shred of decency in their soul.
So basically, you're too fucked up and crazy to view anything without tying it, no matter how unrelated, to the worst atrocities in human history. Gotcha.
I'm sorry, this itch needed scratching......why do they (The Natives, that is) make them and sell them as souvenirs?
Um...what? How on earth did you arrive at the conclusion that stealing garb from Native cultures is unrelated to the rest of the shitfucked behavior white people directed at Natives? Do you also think that precedent shouldn't matter in Supreme Court decisions? Do you feel a slap in the face is, like, totally not the same as the previous 300-ish years of stealing from this population? I'm honestly not sure how you're failing to draw the line from A to B here. The murdering has ended, yes. Ripping children from their parents and reeducating them elsewhere has ended, yes. Stealing the small bit of land they're allowed has mostly ended, yes. We don't sign treaties anymore with the intent of reneging on our agreement as soon as the ink is dry, yes. Welcome to 2015? The indignities are less violent but every bit as upsetting. Progress! Is the fact that something can be bought an indication of its moral or ethical acceptability? If so, I have a seven year old who loves to suck dick for the right price...just PM me. I also have a fine collection of pickaninny figurines and white rhino tusks. EDIT: please no one PM me about that
I bet when the braves won the world series you nearly died of dehydration from all the tears you were shedding. MY STATE IS NAMED AFTER A NATIVE AMERICAN WORD. I HOWL AT THE MOON AS I DANCE ON THEIR BONES, PINK CUP. THE BEAST MUST BE FED.
There is presumably a distinction to be made between simple titles and deeply symbolic religious iconography.
Are we just going to let this go by without comment? Who is this seven year old? Where are his or her parents? Why has the state not taken them away from you? What in the hell?
It's a Native child, his parents were given a parcel of land in a super remote area with zero economic prospects so they make meth and sell that for money but obviously that means they're not home much? The state doesn't care because Rez problems aren't their problem and it should be obvious by now that I'm trolling harder than Audrey
