Anyone with some Hotel work experience? I'm going to apply to a Audio Visual - Information Technology Technician job at one. I have tons of AV but not so much Tech experience. I know the basics on PC's and macs. My question is what do I need to know about for this job? Here's what the posting says: Coordinates the set up of all audio visual equipment. Ability to troubleshoot all hotel systems. Maintains all up to date knowledge of software, hardware and network applications through the hotel. Thanks in advance
For all you cooks/bakers out there, I need to know what counters the flavor of almond extract. I made some homemade icing tonight and though is good and sugary, I can't help but notice the almond extract aftertaste. I added vanilla in hopes of cutting it and that helped a bit, but I don't want to go overboard and have white vanilla extract frosting. Any ideas to get rid of the almond?
Can anybody find a link to the kd lang performance of Hallelujah at the Olympic Opening Ceremony? I can only find one shitty cell-phone recording, and the NBC videos are blocked in Canada.
Not blocked yet, watch soon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQBaK9hWDx4 Edit: I cant cook for shit, unless I have a recipe. Even so, what can alter Hamburger Helper to the point that it tastes homemade? Salt helps, but I have a bunch of spices, and want to liven up my daily fare...
I'm in the middle of designing a new label for some stuff I make and would be interested to see what someone else comes up with. I know there are some artsy/graphic designing people around... anyone want to play around with it? PM me for details. THANKS!
I'm sure I've seen this question answered before, but after digging around I don't think it's been posted on this board yet: Let's say that I'm going to a bar for the night, and want to be on good terms with the bartender. I want to keep the drinks flowing fairly easily, and maybe get a round for some people; if the bartender could comp a couple drinks that would be nice but this near the bottom of the list. How do I get this without outrageous tips every time I get a drink (I am perfectly fine with tipping, what I mean here is over the top tips--I'm a college student)? I want to emphasize that I'm not looking to screw anyone over here. I know there are a couple bartenders on this board that could help me out here. Thanks!
Make yourself memorable. Be polite, be funny and leave a good impression. Tips are important but if I was the one behind that bar dealing with turds all the time I'd really just want someone to be quick with their order, be polite about it and make me laugh. I'd remember them. And that's really what you want. Or just show some tit.
It doesn't work everywhere, but I've had good luck doing the following. If you show up before the place is super crowded, just talk to the bartender and let him/her know what's going on, if you have a group of people, etc. Order your first drink/round, and give him/her a real nice tip at the beginning. Let them know you'll appreciate quick service the rest of the night, and keep giving decent tips as the night goes on. A 20 at the beginning, and a little communication can work wonders. If they do a great job, I've been known to leave a real big tip at the end of the night too. Of course, nothing beats being a "regular" and getting to know the bartenders that way too. Shitty, dirty, hole-in-the-wall dive bars are better for that. Trendy, crowded, popular bars usually have terrible service no matter what you do.
I doubt I am going to get useful feedback but my internet skills are failing me in this search. I am looking to rent a hot dog cart for a day to use at a charity event. If anyone on this board knows anything about catering/vending rentals please shoot me a PM. Obviously this is location specific - the event is in St. Louis. But I'd also appreciate any feedback with general ideas on where to look for one. Thanks.
Walk up to one on the street and tell him/her what you're looking for. They'd be the best informed on it, I'd imagine.
First thing, don't hit on the bartender! It's so overdone, you'll get grouchy service (although you may not even realize it) the rest of the night, and any shot you may have had at free drinks is gone. Bartenders (even when we do the whole show cleavage look, etc.) are NOT there to try to be your next girlfriend, no matter how much we smile at you. It's all part of the game. Be polite. Make conversation, but not so much to keep me from doing my job. Case in point, last night I had a guy who kept trying to talk to me while I dealt with an entire bar full of people, shouting for drinks (another pet peeve). Dude, just STFU, I'm busy, as I nod, smile & walk away. If they *are* busy, let them know they're doing a great job, even if you had to wait a couple minutes. A simple, "Hey, I see you're swamped, but you're doing a great job!" can make my night, and earn you that free drink. As far as tipping, depends on the bartender. Personally, I tend to comp more to the nice guy who is patient, doesn't yell at me to get him a drink, thanks me, and an average or below average tipper than the guy who is a huge tipper, and an even bigger asshole. A couple of my (younger) cow-orkers will ignore the nice guys, and cater to the big tipper. Guess what? I make the same money, and less of a headache, because I won't talk to the assholes beyond here's your drink! and they're just overtipping to impress their friends. Basically, boils down to personality. Be nice, don't be lecherous, tip decent, don't bother overtipping, make conversation that isn't about politics or sex, and treat them as a person, not your servant. And yes, if you're a regular, it helps you a lot. If not, just be the nice patron, not the jerk trying to impress your friends.
Find out if the bartender has a favorite shot to make or some specialty shot he/she invented. I knew a few bartenders that liked to show off by conjuring up what ever shot they had invented. Ordering an extra shot for the bartender to take with you never seemed to hurt either. Also, slap a twomp in the barbacks hand as well, they do the real heavy lifting at bars.
I'm going to Chicago this weekend with my girlfriend. Are there any reasonably priced places that I must eat at. Reasonable being about $25-30 a plate. I'm staying at a hotel at Michigan and wacker, on the river. Pretty much in the middle of everything so far as I can tell.
Don't do this on a busy night if it's a complicated shot/drink, as they will hate you. Order simple drinks, quickly and easily, and tip well, and that will make you the go-to customer for such a night. Want to become a bartender's worst enemy? Blender drinks or fancy shit on a really slamming night. Unless you tip them stupid, of course.
Like everyone else has said, if you want to be that guy who gets service fairly easily or just "keeps the drinks flowing," be as manageable as you can. Simple, mixed drinks like gin and tonics or draft beers, and be polite. Act willing to wait as long as it takes and always, always smile and look the bartender in the eye. I get assholes all the time going through a list of questions or taking forever to make up their mind and trust me, they aren't getting any special treatment. If you're easy to serve, it'll be easy to order. Of course, when you're at other bars it helps to mention you're a bartender, which you may or may not be able to pull off, because in my experience that is a surefire way to get comped drinks. Why? Because bartenders tip big, bigger than anyone. I always get tabs back that are half price when the bartender knows what I do, which I make up for in tip, plus a little extra, that pays for a looot more than just the drinks.
Also I did have a question, and it's this: does anyone from the old board happen to have a copy of Slingblade's exchange with a user on the Quarter Life Crisis boards? It's old, from 2005 or so, that I remember being so funny I could hardly breathe. Someone pasted it and put it up for a while after the QLC boards deleted it, and if anyone happened to hang on to it I'd love to read it again.
Here is the audio of the commercial with most of Richard Thomas' voice removed. I was not able to ID it with Tunatic, but maybe somebody else can. http://rapidshare.com/files/354269250/m-comm2.mp3.html
I'm trying to find the version of the song "You Can't Fail Me Now" that's on the Knocked Up DVD. It's the one with Joe Henry and Loudon Wainwright performing it live. So far all I've been able to turn up is one or the other doing it separately. No luck on itunes, Youtube, or Amazon. Help!
