So my laptop is absolutely fucked. When I press the power button, I get a screen that looks like the old Dos screen, with a flashing space bar. I recently got a virus from an email that I tried to get rid of buy couldn't. Any clues on things I can do to save my comp?
I'm in the market for a spinner (stationary bike) that I can put in my living room. I need one that can support a fatass that moves around more than he probably should while he's on the bike and has as many difficulty settings as possible. I'm normally a complete tightwad when it comes to money, but I'll be using the thing twice a day so I'm definitely willing to spend extra if the quality is there. Does anyone have any brands or models they would recommended or avoid?
I like to screw with the guy that I share an office with. One of my favorite things to do is to swap his right and left mouse button functions; he gets so frustrated and when he finally walks away, I switch them back. My question is this: is there a quicker way than going into the control panel and opening up mouse settings to do this under windows xp? Can I write a batch file or something that will make this swap? Also, if anyone has other good, harmless computer pranks I'm always open to new ideas. I also like the old "take a screenshot of the desktop, set it as the desktop and hide the icons" but that one also takes a long time to do and reverse. Is there a good way to speed that one up?
Open word, goto to tools, select Autocorrect Options. Enter common words and have it autocorrect to swear words. i.e. replace "the" with cock, "is" with fuck, etc, etc, etc. Be warned that once you make the changes any microsoft office product will autocorrect those words. When I did it to a guy I work with he sent our banker an email that ended with: Thank fucker, JR the dick
that one probably leaves the realm of harmless if he doesn't proofread. There's usually a keyboard shortcut that changes the orientation of the desktop, so you can rotate his entire screen 90 degrees. Try CTRL-ALT-Arrow keys and see what happens. Down is upside-down, up is regular, left and right are self explanatory.
Jesus. Just, please don't ever do that anymore. Holy fuck. Higher kv results in less patient dose, and a lower contrast image. I'm not sure what your background is, so please ignore the next few sentences if you already have radiology training. Think of kv as a school bus and the mA are the kids inside. The higher the kv or "speed of the bus" determines the scale of black, white and grey and, secondarily, how much is actually absorbed in the body. If the bus is driving at a brick wall at 120 mph its more likely to go through it and take the kids through as well(less absorption). At 80 mph, the bus is more likely to hit the wall and splatter the kids on it as well. The splattered kids are like radiation absorption. What this all means basically is that higher kvp is generally safer for the body but results is poorer image quality. mA is irrelevant until you apply seconds to it. Its just the amount of juice going to the cathode wire. The longer the time, the higher the dose. In the case of a ct its generally several seconds at a really high mA. (300mA x 1sec = 300 mAs. THIS IS HUGE!! 300mA x .01sec = 3mAs. Much nicer). Which is thousands of times higher than a standard xray. Not only that, but ct uses a finely collimated beam, which means its very thin and highly focused and it goes in circles bathing every inch it touches in ionizing radiation. In your case, you shot your head twice, radiating sensitive parts like the lens of the eye and the retina. Nerve tissue is highly radioresistant. Whats worse, is that I don't know where you were standing when you did all this. If you were in the room with the machine, you were hit with an astronomical amount of scatter radiation. This actually worse because your body absorbs it all. It is weak and unfocused and does the most to damage. The higher the kv, the higher the scatter and the more dangerous it is for the people around you. Since lower kv is more absorbed by the patient, people nearby aren't as in danger. What this all means is that you won't get cancer from this, but don't ever fucking do it again. Radiation is a cumulative thing. People who have multiple ct's over their whole body are at a higher risk of getting oh-so-fun diseases like leukemia and skin cancer. Its why there are people like me to make sure proper safety measures are in place to keep people safe and absorbed dose to a minimum.
In an effort to improve my lack of knowledge of the world around me, I'm considering subscribing to either Time Magazine and/or The Economist. I generally hear very positive things about both. I read them occasionally, like at the doctor's office, and am usually impressed and/or amused with their articles. Can anyone weigh in on one or the other. It's not an issue of money; not at 50 cents an issue and $2.50 an issue, respectively. The question is how worthy each source is of getting my news from, or if there are other better alternatives out there. I've grown to respect the opinions of you people on these sorts of things, so I'd like any input you feel like sharing. Until I'm convinced to do otherwise, I plan on subscribing to both. I've been willfully ignorant most of my life. That's mostly because I'm very skeptical of most things, particularly when it comes to the media and what I'm willing to believe from them. However, I know it doesn't do me any favors to continually know fuck-all about, say, Wikileaks or what we can learn from China's rapidly-growing economy. Sooner or later, I'd like to be able to talk with the grown-ups about shit that matters, without spewing whatever ill-conceived thought comes to my mind. But I don't want to start reading just any random magazine or website. I'm so concerned about biases in the news (far too concerned, actually) that I avoid all of it indiscriminately.
If you are into it for the pictures, go with Time. If you want to actually learn something with some very in-depth and fairly non-biased journalism, go with the Economist.
My old laptop is effectively dead. I'm considering paying to have it fixed or just buying a new one. My only concern with buying a new one is, how do I retrieve all my stuff? I had a flash drive backing up everything but it was recently stolen. And this morning, my computer malfunctioned and is now dead. I am a complete moron when it comes to computer hardware. I know how to remove the hard drive and the battery from my laptop and that is it. That's all I know about hardware. Everything I've got is on that hard drive. How do I retrieve the info without spending $100? Any help is greatly appreciated. Please PM your response. Thanks so much.
I know there's a couple of nurses on the board. I'm planning on travel nursing next year (end of January, beginning of February.) I'd appreciate any information that could help. Agencies, recruiters, facilities, etc. Thanks in advance.
A couple years ago the boss got us all cruzer flash drives that has U3 software on it, which we use to password protect the drive for whenever we telecommute (our computer files have sensitive data). My computer at home had to have some changes recently, and now has unix instead of windows. It doesn't recognize the U3 program. I've been having to plug the drive into my husband's laptop (which has Windows XP) to disable and enable the security. I also noticed that the U3 doesn't work on on husband's secondary laptop, which has Windows 7. Before I do a lot of research on a topic I know little about, I figured I'd ask here first - do y'all know of any brands of flash drives with encryption programs that unix would recognize? Or any downloadable programs I can install on my cruzer? If your recommendations would work for both unix and windows 7, I can pass that on to my boss in case he or my other coworkers ever get windows 7 and encounter the same problem I have. Thanks!
Can someone PM me a username and password to an online university database? I just found out that my University is migrating to a new system and as a result, my access has been screwed up. I was just on my university's database 3 hours ago. Thanks in advance.
The U3 software sucks. I'd just stick with an application like TrueCrypt. It's flexible, cross-platform, and well regarded. http://www.truecrypt.org/
Holiday Ham I need to send a holiday ham to a customer in Windsor, Ontario. I am in the southern U.S. and need a recommendation of a good place that will either ship from U.S. to Canada or a place in Canada that will deliver. I know this board is infested with dirty Canadians so I would appreciate any help.
I posted in the Workout thread but no one got back to me. I think I pinched a nerve in my neck this afternoon working out (I work out regularly, so I don't know what did it today). It was a sharp pain for about 2 hours and it actually made me nauseous. I took an Aleve and it has helped a bit but my neck is still really sore, and if I move sometimes there's a sharp pain that goes through my back. Any way to get better or will it just take a day or two of rest?
You should see a doctor, preferably a sports doctor. Anything in your neck/spine area, you don't play around with. Until you get in to see them, I'd suggest the following: - Take some ibuprofen for pain and inflammation; - Ice the area, 10 mins on/10 mins off for about half an hour. Repeat regularly; - Maintain proper posture so you're not putting undue pressure on any particular area; and - As long as it doesn't hurt (as in sudden, sharp pain) stretch the sore area out a tiny amount to stop it contracted and inflaming. If it feels anything more than a dull, low ache stop. And get to a doctor. Unless you know what it is, don't mess around with it. Better to be a healthy fool than a dead hero.
