I took these in south Georgia in the woods near a swamp. Anybody know what did this to the tree?

    FYI
    - there were several trees in the immediate vicinity with these marks
    - the peeled barked extended well above my arm's reach, so it's something that can climb
    - there were no teeth marks; just the claw marks / peelings

By process of elimination, I think it's a bear (or bears). This is in an area where there could be Black bear - this is between the Okeefenokee Swamp and the Ocmulgee River basin, both of which support Black bear. I've just never seen this personally before.

If it is bear, why do they do this? Are they looking for grubs or something to eat? I grew up in the woods in Middle Georgia and no squat about local bear. I mean, I didn't grow up in the woods, we lived in a house - well, you know what I mean.

If you don't have much running or long distance walking experience, 13.1 miles isn't easy. The fact that you needed to run/walk the 5k is not an encouraging sign, though if you wanted to gut out a half, you may be able to given that you've done 6 miles. Just know that the risk of injury is extremely elevated. It would be much smarter to build your mileage gradually. I've gutted out events I shouldn't have done before and they were much more painful than they should have been as I was injured during the two I shouldn't have done and had to push mentally, rather than enjoy them.

I'm not a running guru or anything, but I know a few and train with several ultrarunners frequently. I'm also probably gonna be running my first 50k in November.

I figure this is the place to learn some internet stalker techniques, and my google-fu is pretty pathetic. If anyone here can help, I'd appreciate it. Here's the story:

In 1989 I toured Europe with a band, and we spent a lot of time in and around Madrid. As these things go, surprise surprise, I met a woman there, and had a lovely whirlwind romance with her. Went back to Madrid that winter to visit her for a week or 10 days or something. We traded long letters (this was before email, kiddies) and my Spanish got really good for a while there. It was hot, it was exciting, it was sexy, it was doomed. As the cliche continues, of course it just fizzled out over time, and by the next year we'd lost touch completely.

A week or so ago, I discovered that if you click on the "messages" button on Facebook, there's a folder there called "Other." I clicked on it and found dozens of messages from a several year period that I never saw because they wound up in this folder for some reason. Among them was a message from late July of this year.

It was from the girl in Madrid, asking if she'd found the right guy, and wanting to renew the friendship and be in touch. It was written in adorably broken English ("have you ever touched the battery?" in place of "do you play the drums?"), and it was very sweet, and it made me smile.

And there was no reply button.

Apparently, she's since removed her facebook page, and so there's no one to respond to - she's gone, back in the wind. I tried some basic searches with her name and Madrid, but her name is a bunch of really typical Spanish names, and she could just as easily have married anyway. So there's a pretty good chance that I'll never find her and she'll never know that she found me, and it will be a tragic film on the Lifetime channel next fall. I don't really have too many details other than her name and the section of Madrid she lived in over 20 years ago, before the internet even existed. She is still in Madrid, the note said so.

Okay all you accomplished stalkers - is there enough to go on? Any chance of it being an uplifting heartwarming film on Lifetime next fall? PM if you can help and I'll fill you in on whatever little details I can.

I saved the page with the message on it in a tab - apparently because she doesn't have a page anymore, if I close that window, it's gone forever.

So I'm going to be purchasing a new MacBook Pro 15" laptop within the next couple weeks, and I was trying to decide between the two. I'm going to be using the laptop for is some video/sound editing, 3D animation, gaming, and casual and school use. I am trying to figure out if the differences between the two justify the $200 price difference, and also wondering if the differences between the two will be greatly noticeable.

I just moved to the NYC area a few weeks ago so I'm not too familiar with the area, nor do I have too many friends here. Anyway, I'm supposed to be going on a date with this girl I met this weekend. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant, preferably in Manhattan (although I'd be willing to hear other suggestions just for future reference). She is a vegetarian and I will eat just about anything, except for seafood. I'm not looking to break the bank, but I don't want to take her to McDonald's either. Also, it's a first date. If that matters.

I remember hearing someone mention mountain biking on here.

I'm looking to get back into the sport, I'd like some good information on bikes and needs etc. My most recent bike was a Specialized rock hopper. It got stolen, and I think I want to replace it with a step up.

So, any information on mountain bikes, and road bikes, would be appreciated.

Does anyone have a Spotify code they're willing to give up? I just can't see coughing up 10 bucks a month for it.

I haven't burned a DVD for use in a DVD player for maybe 7 years - back in the day I encoded with Nero, but I no longer own it.

Is there a good free utility to publish AVIs and MP4s (and maybe mkvs) to DVD thats playable in a DVD player without native support for those formats?

This is a tattoo post but I demand it is ok in the general post.

I have a tattoo in mind. It will, in fake names, involve my mother Tracy, stepfather Mike, and grandfather Buddy. How do I go with this? I'm a big guy, 6' 3" and 260lbs. I guess I'd like in on an arm area, somewhat visible. Maybe with their career backgrounds involved, Tracy was a paper mill supervisor, Mike was a mine shaft rescuer, and Buddy was an engineer for a railroad. First tattoo.

Looking at buying a house with some land, 8.5 acres to be exact. It sits on top of a hill and is 5 years old.

We noticed some cracks in the drywall and the deck isnt level. According to the inspector I hired, he said the house was just settling. But I'm a little weary if the foundation is involved.

My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I want to hire a structural engineer or the equivalent of, to come out and assess the foundation.

    Am I being overly paranoid?

I know little about real estate, but I don't necessarily trust inspectors.

    A few things:

    1. Stand back and look at the roof lines. Does everything, from a distance of about 30ft, appear straight, true and plumb? Are there sags? Does it tilt in one direction or the other?

    2. What kind of foundation is it? Continuous pour, block, ICF...? If it's a block foundation, stay the fuck away.

    3. A structural engineer may be able to provide you with some insight; keep in mind, there's no way he can pull anything away to see what's going on behind stuff. If the inspector couldn't see it (like, physically lay eyes on it), then neither will the engineer.

    4. Is it recently finished? Brand new drywall, fresh paint on everything, etc? If so, I'd be very leery of a quick flip or a coverup. Lipstick on a pig, and all.

As I might have mentioned in a previous post at some point, I am currently in my first semester of law school. I was wondering if any of the lawyers on this board had any advice/study tips/things I should avoid about law school in general(other than "run like hell")? Thanks in advance.

Just buy a $40 DVD player from Costco that supports those codecs. The savings in blank DVD's alone will more than pay for it. (Fit 3-4 movies in .mp4/.avi codec on a DVD instead of one in standard DVD format) If you rip the DVD's at a high enough bit rate, it's practically indistinguishable from the original.

Got a recommendation for a program to rip (copy) DVDs on a Mac? Preferably in the free price range?

    Handbrake

    <a class="postlink" href="http://handbrake.fr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://handbrake.fr</a>

Can't speak highly enough about it. (I do all my ripping/etc on Macs).

    It's what I use for all non-protected DVD's.

For those disks that are protected with some BS DRM of some sort (usually about 1 in 100 disks I rip, I find), run it through MacTheRipper first to de-scramble it, and then run the output of that through Handbrake. Basically if Handbrake fails to read/rip the disc, try using MacTheRipper on it and see if that works.

Does anyone here have any experience dealing with hamstring tendonitis? I developed some pain during a 25 mile run, the tendon that runs behind the knee towards the inside. I've been doing some rest, icing, elevation, NSAIDS, foam rolling the surrounding muscles, and applying an arnica cream. Anyone know how long I may need to recover? Should I be good to go for a long race in 9 days?

For anyone who has a decent understanding of statistics, I'm having trouble with a case for grad school. I have 5 years of monthly time series data for a manufacturing business. The data includes the amount of natural gas used per month from the power company (response variable). The output of machine Y, which uses natural gas as fuel (predictor variable) and the number of heating days per month (predictor). The case wants me to estimate the amount of natural gas consumption that is due to the machine.

The RMSE is high enough for the heating days variable to be an above average predictor of gas consumption. However, the RMSE is significantly lower for the machine variable. Is creating a new variable that expresses gas consumption divided by machine output, then doing a regression with the new variable and the heating days variable a plausible way to solve this? Or am I misunderstanding how this shit works and going in the wrong direction?

    Thanks in advance.
