Agreed, you can definitely mention that the new place wants you ASAP if you think replacing you won't be an issue, but if you've been there eleven years I assume you want them as a reference and don't want their last memory of you to be fucking them out of a common courtesy.

Obviously I have no idea how the conversation with the new place went down, but I assume they know you're currently employed, you should probably wonder why they want you to pull a dick move like leaving with no notice.

I would be very forthright with the old employer, and for the time being, let the new employer know you will try to start immediately but you can't make any promises. Conversation with current employer could be the highlights of why you're moving on, a couple of notes of all that you've learned and appreciated in the current job but again, why you're moving on, and mention that the new place wants you immediately but that you're committed to doing what's right in your current position, so if less than two weeks can't happen then it can't. Mention that even one week would be helpful, and maybe both sides can compromise.

I don't know what you do and how impactful 2 weeks is, but try and see it from your current employers perspective and whether there's any ways to mitigate you leaving early. Could you help train a coworker to ease the transition? Write out SOPs or something? Be available via phone to answer questions, or even promise to come into the old employers for an hour meeting to followup with any questions? Help in recruiting a replacement by recommending good folks?

I'm not sure if I should post this here or the tech help thread. I'd say I have about average to above average tech knowledge for someone of my generation (23 years old) and I need some recommendations/help for something I want to set up.

I want a media center/torrent/seed box type of thing that will:
    a. download seasons of tv shows and new episodes of tv shows as they are released
    b. seed said torrents to build/maintain ratio
    c. stream to my tv
    d. able to be accessed remotely (by my macbook air) so I don't need to have a monitor/keyboard/mouse attached or anything

I have an xbox 360 already hooked up to the tv in my living room (don't know if that helps), an old desktop that's not hooked up to anything and could be set up and stashed away in my closet if that's possible, and a 2TB external hard drive.

I've taken apart computers before and installed new hardware so I'm comfortable doing that, I kinda just need someone to point me in the right direction. Help please?

Here are my recommendations for the cheapest/easiest way to do this:

Get a cheap desktop. Put on Serviio, uTorrent, PeerBlock, and RealVNC. Serviio is for streaming, uTorrent is obviously for torrenting. PeerBlock could be switched out for any other service you want to pay for to prevent being sued. For RealVNC setup the server on the cheap desktop and the client software goes on your MacBook Air. You would probably want to put a pretty big internal hard drive in that desktop as well as an external to make sure you don't lose anything you want to keep. Also try and locate the desktop near the wireless router in your place so that you can plug it in via Ethernet rather than wireless. This will help a ton with streaming HD quality stuff. Good luck!

So I need a little direction. I've just graduated university with a degree in Spanish. My Spanish is good, but not good enough to be a court translator or something in that capacity (between B2 and C1 I'd say). Aside from the normal college grad sales programs, does anyone have any advice or direction they can point me in? I'm somewhat at a loss for things to do outside of the service industry, which I want to stay away from because of my past alcohol problems.

Random thoughts: first, if I were you I'd demand that my university program give me solid resources to be able to help with this issue. What do other grads of the program go onto do?? Don't they bring organizations/companies onto campus to discuss hiring?

Other random ideas from someone with little background on this: a quick search for Federal jobs needing spanish skills on USAJOBS turns up a couple of entry level positions. I imagine SW states (AZ, TX, etc) would also have these types of jobs. Could you go overseas to work somewhere Spanish speaking and use your superior English language skills for a job, while perfecting your Spanish?

Again, just talking out my butt, but it seems like if you want translation to be the core of your chosen profession, that you'd make yourself most valuable by having a competency in one field or another. Like, medical translation or court/legal translation or direct consumer communication, etc. SEems like there are jobs other than translation that can have language skills as the core competency, like teaching or hospitality, etc.

Otherwise, you're an X professional in whatever field, that happens to also speak spanish, like a nurse that speaks Spanish, or an accountant that speaks spanish, etc. If you're already an X, then I guess you're looking for places that need X's that can speak Spanish, ie places that have Spanish speaking audiences/customers.

Your search seems fairly geographically driven, ie where are there Spanish speakers/customers that need an X?

What did you intend to do with your degree? Why did you choose it? Do you have a dream job in mind?

My "Can someone help me with this?": maybe this is a strange question, but I'm kind of weirdly out of it when it comes to some things, but how do you best store data that you want access to for a long time? Specifically, I want to take all my (soft copy) photos and store them all in one place for ever and ever, basically. Right now, they're spread across 3 different laptops. Am I looking for an external hard drive? Sticking them all in a "cloud" somewhere, and btw, what the hell does that mean? I've asked around other non-IT folks, and there doesn't seem to be a common, great answer to what people are doing.

Can anyone offer solid personal finance advice? I graduated college six months ago and now it is time to start paying back my student loans.

I have a full time job making $35k a year and four massive, life crippling, student loans to pay off. My first loan is from Citi for a total of $36, 625.00 (8.75% interest) and a minimum monthly payment for $267.28

I had two other loans through Citi that have been purchased by Discover ($26,649.00 and $30,860.00) for a monthly payment of $691.87 (8.75% interest)

My last loan is also through Discover for $33,300 and $322.26 a month. (8.75%)

That's $1282.01 per month of just minimum payments.

Now, what I really came to ask is what is the best idea to pay this down as fast as I can?
Should I consolidate through another company? Should I pay the minimum and throw in extra towards interest?

I've heard that consolidating is the way to go, but it extends the term of the repayment and that the interest rate will jump higher. I called Discover and he assured me this was not the case, but I honestly am not sure I should trust them. I was told my monthly payments were as low as they could be and that I should consider consolidating with Wells Fargo.

I've combed through Reddit and search engine queries but all the advice can be pretty skewed towards an individuals situation. Consolidation may work for one but not for all. Luckily, I am living at home and see myself here for at least another 1.5 years. And paying off these loans for the next 50....

Can any of you financially savvy Idiots point me in the right direction?

Anyone working in the IT field (NOT programming because oh God I would go mad) please PM me if you wouldn't mind answering a few questions. I'm looking at several different schools and programs, preferably something that varies a bit day to day, and I could really use some insight and answers from people with inside perspective.

Two and a half years ago my heart broke, literally. I was fortunate to live and even more fortunate to emerge with very little permanent damage to my heart, etc. It was a freak situation that shouldn't have happened and as my Cardiologist keeps telling me, shouldn't happen again. I'm off most of the meds and will be off the last major one this May with only a baby aspirin to take daily. Very good prognosis.

This still hasn't alleviated the occasional bout of anxiety. It was really bad early on and I've dealt with it the best I could. The last couple weeks, for some reason, have been rough. I've had two anxiety issues and I hadn't had one in over a year. I've realized that I may be physically ok, I need mental assistance dealing with the long term effects of this life changing event.

I've never done this before and I'm not sure how to go about finding somebody, what qualifications they should have. I have a list from my insurance of what is in network and what they'll pay partly for. I'm still going to shell out a bit out of pocket, but it's time. I should have done this awhile ago.

Any advice, experiences etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone have any experience with acting?

I've never really done it before and I have no idea where to start. I'm more or less looking at how to be a good actor, what to do, what not to do or just anything that I would absolutely need to know.

Any help is appreciated, even just pointing me in the direction of a good book would be nice.

    Thanks guys.

Has anybody had experience driving from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon?

I'm going to Las Vegas later this year for a week and would love to rent a car and drive out there. I heard it can take anywhere from two to five hours. Is there a route anyone here has had experience with that doesn't take too long but is relatively scenic?

Any advice on this at all would be helpful, it's my second time in the USA (first time in the West), and I've never drove there before (I'm from the UK).

    Thanks.

I would suggest using both an external hard drive and a cloud storage solution.

I use a 1TB external hard drive as a physical backup and i also use Dropbox (<a class="postlink" href="https://www.dropbox.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">https://www.dropbox.com/</a>) which is a cloud solution. The hard drive just sits in a drawer until i need to backup, which i do every month or so.

Cloud storage is just remote servers where you can store your data, which is awesome but i still like to have my own backup copies just in case (hence the external hard drive). I haven't heard any horror stories about people losing all their data from the cloud but i still don't fully trust a virtual storage solution managed by a third party... shit happens so always have a physical backup in your possession.

photo backups - backblaze.com or carbonite.com keyed to the computer you consolidate all your stuff on. Plus the external harddrive as mentioned.

Acting - That's kind of a big question really. Stage or screen? Scripted or improv? And so on. For example, the degree you emote on stage is much greater than on TV because your audience is much farther away. But for general advice I'd say look for some community theater, maybe an acting class at a local place. Basically, dip into the theatrical community near you and that should open the doors to learning what you need to know. Just be warned, actors are, shockingly, melodramatic.

I'm no finance guru, but some questions: out of curiosity, what are the lengths of your loans? Do you have any collateral? No? Do your parents have collateral (yes, the house, if they own it) that they'd be willing to stake against your debt? Have you considered Federal loan consolidation (vs the same private banks you've used)?

Unless I read incorrectly, you owe roughly $100k at 8.75%. If your parents could help you get a secured loan, to pay off the ones you currently hold, that may be a more favorable route than trying to turn your current loans into a consolidated loan on your own.

In general, if you have cash to spare, pay down towards the principal.

Edit: consolidating your loans into a secured loan should hopefully result in a lower interest rate, BUT the term may be longer. This doesn't HAVE to translate to more debt over the term of the loan IF you pay it off early (check to make sure there aren't penalties against doing so, with any loan).

Thanks for all the feedback, via PMs as well. When I have time, I'll try and put those responses up, in case anyone had the same question. I think the above response is the route I"m going to go, for all my data backup (don't have much really).
