This is a total tangent . . . but, I found it fascinating. I was flipping channels last night, and stopped on an old episode of Shark Tank. It was 2009, and Irina Blok was pitching her idea for fashion face masks. All the sharks declined, because they didn't see any value in and didn't think people would be interested.

She just about 10 years early, is all. Also, Irina Blok used to work for Google and designed the Android logo.

Google "war reserve material" or "war reserve stock." The US Government is quite capable of keeping massive stockpiles of equipment and material on hand.

Every medical item needed for this pandemic is included in those stockpiles. Theres no reason why the US can't keep pandemic specific stockpiles as well.

I’m curious how nursing homes factored into your guys’ planning? I’ve heard various reports that 50+% of fatalities are from nursing homes. Not sure if that was local to hard hit areas or nationally. Having spent over a year visiting my grandpa in a nursing home the resources those places had was boarder line gross negligence as far as man power per patient. I’ve not heard much as far as the federal or local governments strategy, outside of the forced acceptance of covid positive patients. One of the biggest vectors for the most vulnerable and its scares me they have 1 lpn for 30+ patients if it’s anything like my experience.

Not quite sure how to answer that. We factor them into the planning, but they are not an option for anyone who wasn't already destined there (ie, if there's a 25 year old with it, we're more likely to move them to another place than put them in a nursing home if that's the last available bed). They vary in quality, and each state has different standards for care. Some are nightmarish, some are lovely...mostly depends on money.

In terms of fatalities, it's across the board. If there's an outbreak in an assisted living facility, it'll likely be responsible for a big chunk of death and cases in that county, but nationwide it's nowhere near 50%.

Florida is the biggest state we're concerned with having that problem, because to quote their governor "it's God's waiting room" in some parts, at least.

A fucking lot, apparently. And I have no doubt that just like everything else no one wants to pay for it.

Is it something going forward more protections would be built in? As far as scalpel vs axe a more comprehensive targeting of supplies, resources, and strategic plans for buildings with dozens to hundreds of critically vulnerable people seems like a no brainer. It just seems odd the protections in place, or lack thereof, for one of the larger single demographics for death is hardly mentioned or dwelled upon (at least in the media and public zeitgeist). I am being colored by the negative experience with my granpas care facility. Poor girls there were given no chance with resources (despite the eye popping per month cost per patient). I can't imagine that same situation with dealing with this pandemic on top of it.

Holy. Fuck. Ran to home depot to pick up some tomato cages, the line was around the building to get in. And even if there wasn't a line, I wouldn't have gone in given the number of people I saw in the parking lot not wearing a mask. What normally would have been a 5 minute one way trip took me half an hour due to the number of cars on the road. Apparently people forgot how to drive during quarantine as well?

I am absolutely terrified based upon what I saw. This shit is gonna spike, and it's gonna be a HUGE spike!

Home Depot around here has no contact curbside pickup. I'm not going in any store at the moment. If there isn't a huge spike in the next few weeks I'll be shocked.

We are not going anywhere because all of a sudden Louisiana opened up for 25% capacity and people are losing their minds and going to 2 and 3 different restaurants per day.

We ordered what we needed at homedepot.com and are just waiting for it to arrive.

it’s kinda a tale of two towns here. The city is handling everything properly, people are all wearing masks, they’re sanitizing carts when you walk in, people aren’t crowding etc. But the small town where I am, and a few that my mother in law passed through yesterday, are as packed as we have ever seen them. Ever. Like not just COVID crowded.

I’m going to total wine in a bit for my wife and I have zero concern because it’s in the city where people don’t act like fucking idiots. Sure, the trip will take an hour longer than it would if I stayed local, but locally they’re acting like fucking idiots.

The local hot dog wagon opened yesterday and today the wait was half an hour but well worth it. This is the perfect business for the current situation. Outdoors, only one customer or group at a time can order. Everyone also had face masks and stayed about 6 feet apart while lined up.

And this guy makes some good dogs. I got the dog on the right - that’s a stay puffed ghost pepper dog - a dog with chili, cheddar cheese, ghost pepper sauce, sour cream (dyed green) and marshmallow fluff (dyed blue). It sounds crazy, looks crazy, and tastes fantastic.

ok, I take back the part where I said people don't act like fucking idiots there. People were by and large taking the idea of 6 feet and doubling it. Waiting at the ends of aisles until you came down. Except for two groups.

One group were these two frathole looking fuckers walking around in swimsuits and tank tops seemingly on a mission to physically bump into as many people as possible. One of the shitheads was carrying a case of white claw in each hand, and had another wedged in each armpit. He was a walking advertisement for everything you hate that white claw stands for. No mask. His friend, tweedledumb was fortunately wearing a mask, but stopped and shouted loud enough for the whole store to hear "oh dude! You know what we need to be drinking during the day?!? These!!!" And holds up two 30 racks of natty ice.

Other group looked like a husband and white, late 40s-ish, saw them arguing with a store employee on my way out. Poor kid couldn't have been older than 21 and had that look in his eyes like his soul is already gone. Overheard the mask-less dipshit husband say, in a very firm and annoyed manner, "but I don't need to wear a mask, I'm NOT sick." (That county requires masks to be worn in public.) Soul-less young store employee, equally annoyed, "sir, it's the law."

Lowes was exceptional though in the way they handled everything, and I will be going an hour out of my way now to go to them over the Home Depot close by. The damn store smelled like sanitizer there was so much everywhere. Maybe it's the en vogue scent? Sure, going out always carries a certain level of risk, but I think (?) the risk can be meaningfully low if I limit the places I go to the necessities, and those places which conduct themselves in a super sanitary manner.... someone please chime in on this if you feel I'm off-base.

Gyms opened up today. My brother owns the gym I belong to and they posted a picture on their Facebook of the staff posing while wearing masks and holding sanitizer bottles. It was supposed to be funny. Except two of the three people weren’t wearing their masks properly, including one who didn’t have it over his nose.

theyre fucking idiots and I won’t be going to the gym for at least another few weeks. If you wanna catch COVID, that’s where you go to catch COVID. I’ll be fine at home for a bit with my redneck workouts. Fuck that noise.

@downndirty Do we know yet whether people without symptoms product antibodies and get rid of the virus, or are they more like Typhoid Mary where they could be infecting new people for years?

I got the blood anti body test and it came back negative. Guess my brother’s super flu in early February either wasn’t covid or it just didn’t pass to me living on top of him with bachelor male living conditions. I’m going with the former.

Man who called virus fake now has COVID, wife on ventilator

I don't wish ill on anyone, but this is a wee bit funny. As Nett is fond of saying, play stupid games win stupid prizes. If this impacted only him, it would be unequivocally hilarious. But sadly, his wife has it and who knows how many people he spread it to since the asshole wasn't wearing a mask while he was working for a rideshare company.
