We're dramatically off topic, so I'll just say that we aren't discussing with enough detail to know how far apart our organizations are; you're taking this too specifically and projecting particulars into my statement that I didn't provide. Of course we have a variety of regularly-reported budgets and strive for accuracy.

My underlying point remains the same, and it's simply that it's not that uncommon for large organizations to factor in previous underruns when structuring new budgets. In most cases, it won't be the only factor, but when allocating money it's relevant to consider that some people tend to over- or under-budget.

Florida has over 10% of USA’s total COVID cases. Even though it’s dropped in the past two weeks they are having more deaths per day than Ontario has reported cases.

Texas is even worse, and unlike Florida does not look like they are trying hard to stop it. They will soon have 600,000 cases of it alone. That’s one in every 15 Texans. Do you guys know anybody who has contact with less than fifteen people in their life?

And don't forget that Florida has totally changed the way they are reporting COVID to make it look better than it actually is.

I just don't understand how anyone thought that was going to work. A bunch of horny 17 - 21 year olds are given their first bit of freedom to live out from under adult supervision and someone thought they were going to all stay 6' apart?

A friend of mine is a teacher at a small university. They planned to go online-only, and then a bunch of the parents said they were going to sue the university if their kids couldn't go to a classroom. So rather than face the lawsuits, they opened up the campus and are going to wait for the county health department to shut them down once infections spike.

So basically thousands of students and teachers get exposed to COVID because the idiot parents think it's appropriate to threaten the school, and the school is too frightened to stand up to the idiot parents. It's horrendous.

I just saw a thing on our local news that PA state colleges may start in-person classes and then revert to remote learning two weeks later. Seems like it'd be a lot easier and smarter to just go remote and be done with it.

Our kid is doing the first semester of his college freshman year online, here at home. Then we'll see what things look like in January.

If you contrast the price of an online education with the on-campus one, yeah...I'd be pissed too.

Part of the problem when a "student" is paying upwards of $30k/year: they are a customer, and the customer is always right.

It blows my mind when parents get involved in their kids' higher ed, though. Like...by default they are adults. The loans are in their names. The fuck you want me to do, lady? Talk to your kid and tell them to call.

I'm not exactly arguing that there should be a difference in price. But threatening the school into opening the campus and exposing everyone to COVID seems like the wrong way to go about it.

Oh I absolutely agree. However, the colleges and universities should have the budget for PPE and cleaning, whereas the local public schools do not. The public schools going online is fine, because...well, they are free. The places that charge tuition are in a bind, and from what I understand, few are taking the high road and saying "we'll stay closed, do our shit online and reduce the costs accordingly." Most of them simply can't afford to do that, and we will see bubble schools start to shut programs down or close entirely. My friend in academia was telling me the schools were already struggling, and the estimates for online-only education from places like Kennesaw State is pretty small. Fighting to stay open is going to bite them hard if there's an outbreak, and the football schools are blowing my mind.

One of my coworkers who's spent time there told me "they'd cancel Jesus, oxygen and eating meat in Alabama before they cancelled football." So, we have that to look forward to, I guess.

We're going through training on how we do sheltering in a COVID-19 environment. Jesus Christ, this is going to be bad. 6ft spacing between cots in a congregate shelter means...you'd need a stadium for quite a few people, in addition to the dramatically increased costs for cleaning and PPE.

Filter that through the whole "if they don't wear masks, why do we think they will evacuate" and we're in for a fuckstorm of stupid meets lack of resources getting railed by "we can't keep you safe".

    Yep, agreed on all counts.

My friend's school says they'll go bankrupt if they have to reduce tuition. I get that it puts them in an ugly spot, but it's sociopathic to say, "we can't afford this, so we'll just open, wait until the infections spike, and let the state close us down so we're blameless."

I don't see how they can have football seasons. It's sketchy enough that paid professional players are going to risk it. You're going to ask kids who are already volunteers to do this? It's impossible that this will result in zero deaths and/or significant lifelong health problems, just because it's impossible to prevent exposure across the board. These kids are already surrounded by the cloud of school profits massively from their presence, but they are not allowed to participate in the profit. And sure, everyone can opt-out, but we've already seen the smart decision-making that college students have, let alone the ones who may be from poor backgrounds and are under the pressure of seeing football as the one path out of poverty.

Yeah, the CFL (cue "I said professional players" jokes now) just cancelled their season.

Several NCAA football programs are making the argument that the players are actually SAFER playing football (football!!), where at least there is testing, great doctors, plenty of PPE etc. then going home and being left to their own devices in their local communities.

I’m not sure I agree with the argument because of course they’re gonna make it since those schools need football and unpaid labor to survive, but I’m not completely ready to write it off as illogical either. Maybe it’s not true of all students, but it’s certainly true of some that they are safer on campus than they are back home

Oh, sure. You joke about CFL athletes, not knowing to most people that legendary players Peyton Manning, Joe Montana and Walter Peyton have all watched or flown over CFL games while they’re being played.

And Warren Moon played for the Eskimos.

Flutie was born in Maryland, grew up in Florida/Massachusetts, played college ball in Massachusetts, and both started and finished his pro career in the United States. He played more years in the NFL than he did in the CFL. We loaned you Flutie.

The main reason colleges are staying open for the first two weeks, MONEY.
Most of the colleges have tuition "locks" where if you don't cancel all your classes and ask for your money back by a certain date, you are required to pay tuition for the semester.
The whole UNC debacle....the deadline for tuition cancellation was about 2 hours after the letter was sent out saying there was not going to be in person classes.
    It's always about the money.
