I know a few work colleagues who have had it, and 1 friend, but I'm not going to base my actions based on that anecdotal information. I like to think that I know very few people who have been inflicted because of the steps we're taking, so it just reinforces the need to keep doing them. It boggles my mind how some people think the opposite... "I don't know anyone with it so we don't need to wear a mask or socially distance."
These variables are incredibly important to keep in mind. And you can add to that population density variation across the country. Anecdotally - my cousin and my mother both contracted it, my mother died. While the rate isn’t high, we currently have cases here in town, including a symptomatic pair of idiots who sent their teenage daughter to school anyway, resulting in a cascade of quarantines.
People are fucking stupid. I don't trust them. Period. More and more I'm just learning to recognize that stupid early, stay clear, and not engage. I'm no longer trying to "educate" them, or try and discuss shit with them. At first it was religion, and then I started thinking, "will they be willing to change their mind based on discussion?" Resoundingly, the answer was "no", so I just stopped, disengaged, retreated, and failed to engage in the future. Then that went to politics. Now it's with flat earh, anti-vax, covid. I've ordered my Airstream and am looking forward to a time when I can just roam the country and not have to deal with the vast majority of people.
@toytoy88 is the only person I can name that has tested positive, and I don't know his last name. I certainly don't have people dropping like flies around me. There have only been 33 deaths in my current county, most of those were early when the nursing homes first got hit. The county in which I grew up, it's small and everyone knows everybody, there are only 3 deaths on record. I'm still not seeing what you people are, widespread stupidity and mask non-compliance. I don't go a lot of places, and we are in a rural area, but when I do go to the store everyone dutifully puts on there masks. This is a deep, deep red area, apparently we're supposed to be stupid, knuckle-dragging science deniers, but that's not the case.
I've seen someone defy masking up probably 1/4 of the places I've gone (Costco, etc) in the last 2 weeks. It's definitely the minority, but it's here, and I think it's because it's leaking from the US. The local news is covering it a ton, and showing how "anti-maskers want their voice to be included in the local health board decisions". There are local protests about having mandatory masking policies, where 50 or so people will show up... and usually there's a quick clip of someone driving by telling them to get their heads out of their asses. Predominately, Canadians favour and abide by the mask policies put in place, but it's not universal. https://www.guelphtoday.com/local-n...up-refuses-to-leave-local-coffee-shop-2733551 https://www.richmond-news.com/news/...t-speaks-out-after-public-backlash-1.24195063 https://www.blogto.com/city/2020/09/toronto-anti-mask-protesters-eaton-centre/
I actually don’t know anyone who’s had it. I am somewhat sheltered here and away from my former social circles in the US and infections are extremely limited here. Masking is universally accepted here and politely enforced. One of my daughters lives in Jersey and she’s serious about masking. My other daughter just moved to Boston and I’ve asked her what the status is of wearing masks at her work and generally as I’m curious about what they’re doing there.
It wouldn't take much to convince to wear a mask, at least in some public situations, long after this is done. Since March, nobody in our house has been sick, at all, except for a little self inflicted food poisoning I had a Monday. That's unusual for this household, typically you can count on the wife or kid getting something once a month. It's been nice. The wife had some kind of illness in March before testing was widely available here, but nothing since. Are those people actually endangering anyone in that setting? Are they not giving people space, close enough to breathe or spray them with droplets? I'm really asking what you're seeing at these busier places. How about the Ohio woman that was tased. She was sitting outside, not within 6 feet of anyone but perhaps her family, until the cop, who was wearing his mask incorrectly, came to drag her out. Was she such a danger?
My sister in law got it. Only person I know personally. This was probably two three weeks ago my brother has had to quarantine with her since. I gauge my worry of the situation on the fact that our mom, who a raving lunatic worrier about covid and anything health related for her boys, hasn’t had a complete mental collapse.
My son just had to get tested. He attends public school. Had a cough this morning that sounded like croup, no other symptoms.
Our school district has officially had new cases four of the past five days, both staff and students. Some businesses are going back to all take-out or are completely shutting down for a week or two because of the rise of infections in the county. 2-3 deaths. And every news article about it on the stations’ Facebook feeds are mostly about it being bullshit and people who are concerned are “sheep”. This fucking community is gonna deserve what it could end up getting.
She wasn't just sitting there minding her own business and then got tased out of nowhere. She was asked repeatedly to put her mask back on because she was at a sporting event and the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) has mandated that all spectators must wear a mask to events; indoors and outdoors. She refused to put the mask back on, so she was told she would have to leave. She refused to leave and then she was told she would be arrested for trespassing which is when the cop first came to talk to her. She resisted the police officer who then told her he was going to taser her if she didn't comply, and after repeatedly trying to get her to move, she got tased. Now imagine if she were a black woman; getting tasered would have been the nicest thing they would have done to her.
I'm not disagreeing at all in that respect. But seeing all the local response to the incident (local as in an hour away from Columbus) is quite entertaining considering the fact that the cop is a black man and she's a white woman and not the other way around.
So first Indiana and now Florida are fully opening up bars and restaurants. The shows going to get real interesting soon.
Meanwhile, here in Ontario, we're closing shit back down because people were too stupid to be trusted to do the right thing themselves. Go figure.
She was sitting there, with family according to their lawyer, not within 6 feet of anyone else... Minding her own business. Whether the asthma claim was true or not, if she was sitting with three other people, people she likely rode with in the same car to the event... You can be around your family, unmasked. I realize there was context leading up to her being tasered, none of it included violation of any law. /\ I \/ Bright side, maybe some of the back the blue folks will realize that sometimes the police actually are the dangerous ones in a situation. But the event will probably just be used by racists to argue.
Here's the thing. No one is 100% when it comes to the countermeasures. I have eaten at a sit down restaurant twice since August, and both times have been outside. In the gym here, there's a crossfit section that is empty at 4 am, and if I am alone I let my neck gaiter down. The massage I got, I didn't wear a mask (she did). Its a weird form of virtue signaling, and the fact that its still spreading is a testament that the countermeasures aren't a silver bullet. A vaccine won't be either. This will pose a threat for longer than it should. Now, if you refuse to wear a mask, stay the fuck home. Don't give excuses or argue, and if you're asked to leave and disobey, yeah shit happens to you that isn't nice. A restaurant can refuse you service for not wearing a coat and tie, so....not much difference to me. You do the best you can to reduce the risk. That's it. The hyperbole is part of the issue: not wearing a mask isn't the same as getting a dozen abortions or murdering kittens. Its shitty, and needs to be treated as such. Part of it reminds me of Jim Cantore, during Laura where it was the fucking apocalypse. It was bad, people can be smarter if you treat them as if they have intelligence you can inform, and let them make the best decisions for them. A mask is preventative, and thats what's in order right now. I keep going back to this: engage, listen and see why someone is behaving shittily. Its like traffic: 9 times out of 10, there is a really valid reason for someone performing a penile maneuver. I heard one exchange where a lady put on makeup and the mask fucked it up, and she was running in and out, and didn't want to have the mask ruin her shit. Fair, I suppose. The other person pointed out that if there's a pic of her without a mask surrounded by people with it, she looks like a Karen, and would be justifiably treated as such. Also, one of my staff lost 3 family members to it, so the sensitivity and compassion needs to come before condemnation. Something as simple as "hey, do you want a more comfortable mask?" Is a better tactic than "cover your fucking holes you plague rat"
