There's a more general problem here that COVID exposed. The more efficient our supply chains get, the more fragile they get. Sure, things are $0.05 cheaper per thousand units, but in the event of disaster, war, crisis, etc our supply will suddenly crater to zero. This is basically what happened with PPE, and many of our domestic manufacturers had been warning about it for years.
Here in Ontario, we've now said we're no longer going to rely on external providers for such key things as PPE, etc, because we (well, the government), fully expects this to happen again in the future and are trying to learn from the mistakes from the first time. You'd be amazed at the number of voters that are against "wasting money" like that.
Bruh we have people who don't believe in vaccines that are decades old. You think we are all signing up for a vaccine developed under the Trump administrations watchful eye? 90% effective and 30% adoption isn't great math.
Right now in Thames Valley the schools are getting so much PPE sent to them that they no longer have storage space to store it in the buildings. It is being stuffed into fan rooms and custodial closets because there is NO room. And the school board is outright refusing to accept order cancellations, they are just going to keep sending it. The schools have jugs upon jugs of hand sanitizer— so much that they could not use it up in at least five years if they tried.
If I take the vaccine, what is the likelihood it will mutate and give me super powers? And, will it help me sleep with Scarlett Johansson or Brie Larson?
The odds of those things are equally good. But if you don't take your vaccine the odds of the last two drop dramatically.
This vaccine only has two labs, one in Germany and one in the US, where it can be produced. Australia already has 10mil units bought and paid for. They think it'll be ready sometime mid next year.
And apparently it requires some pretty serious handling... has to be stored and transported at -75°C.... that's going to be interesting. Not sure I know of many drug stores that have that kind of cryo storage. (Here in Ontario, Shoppers Drug Mart is the place most people go to get things like flu shots, etc). That means that new "last mile" distribution may be needed, maybe the same way they set up the drive-thru testing stations in hockey rinks, etc.
From what I understand, standing up a cryopreservation system is pretty expensive. A friend of mine that works at Moderna said a vaccine for this virus could significantly alter how pharmaceutical distribution systems work permanently.
Don't worry - the Government is here to help! The Department of Homeland Security was born from 9/11 and airlines continue to remind you of the additional $8 'September 11 fee'. Just like your phone bill still shows a rural service tax, your pharmacy/doctor/driver's license bureau will be adding something like a Cryo/Corona Virus tax soon.
I met a new grade of "you're a shitty human being" this morning by happenstance. I try not to make extra unnecessary trips into stores but had to stop and get fuel on my way into work this morning and decided to head inside to grab a couple of Redbulls to assist with the ass dragging morning. It's a small town and the woman who runs the primary gas station knows everyone in towns coming and going. The lady in front of me walked up to buy her handful of scratch-offs when the clerk asked her why she wasn't at work already this morning and the response was, "Oh, Lisa and I both tested positive for covid this week so I'm off work... I feel really bad for them having to run without either of us." I can understand people who have gotten worn out with restrictions or who aren't personally terrified of contracting it and are more lax than they should be about what they are doing and where they are going... but the level of selfish stupidity it takes to be out and about intentionally shopping for shit you don't need in the slightest, during peak hours, when you're knowingly positive is mind-boggling.
Oof. That sounds like a pretty clear breach of containment protocols. Aren't they in violation of some sort of law by doing that? I would have lost my shit on them.
We quickly formed an agreement with several neighbors that if any of us caught it, the others would do the shopping and bring supplies back to the infected household, drop the stuff off on the porch to avoid contact. I like our home, it doesn't take much to convince me not to leave it.
Nevada just shut down for at least 2 weeks. On a related note, my job let me go today. Said my performance was sub-par. By every metric I did the work of more then 2 average employees. Cocksuckers didn't want to pay the unemployment. I have no idea how many they let go, but I'm sure it wasn't just me.
Were you able to ask for examples of subpar work? I know it wouldn’t have changed the outcome, but fuck that shit, they could be more honest than that.
If they try to deny my unemployment, I'll go fucking nuclear on them. They knew this was coming, they also knew I couldn't work from home, so they came up with some bullshit excuse to try and save themselves some money. Everything was fine when I left work yesterday, I walked in this morning and they dropped the axe.
