When everyone gets it at once, healthcare runs out of beds and ventilators and supplies and people die. When they “flatten the curve” by reducing the rate of infection, the healthcare system can keep up and save more lives over time.
We’re arguing two different metrics here. For lack of a better metaphor- It’s more effective to build a wall around China than a wall around their enemies.
You're base assumption put in that metaphor is that nobody can climb the wall. Quarantine (self-imposed) does not work. Self isolation measures do.
Just so you know, you're not the only one with that idea.. a version of it was floated by the UK's Minister of Public Health. The world's leading pandemic experts didn't initially respond because they thought it was a joke.
A lot of places are pulling the plug everywhere. I’m in Saskatchewan and while we’ve hardly just begun to see the worst of things, businesses are closing at a pretty rapid rate already. Service industry is taking it right in the dick. Filing for EI and hunkering down is all I can do.
If this belongs in the politics thread, feel free to move/delete. In light of Clutch's post, seems like it's like a matter of time before the government will put a UBI in place to help people affected by this. Mnuchin has already said it's a matter of when not if.
I have little practical economical input on UBI, but it would bail out a lot of service industry folk. I have a bit of cash on hand, as well as considerate food stores, but I am largely ahead of the game compared to most of my contemporaries. And that is largely due to my wife’s forethought and attention.
Make sure you file reports online the correct day they are due. They are date sensitive, time sensitive, and it’s easy to forget so set reminder(s) for yourself. However reporting it online is super-easy.
My wife and I work in the same company, but in different areas: she’s in the customer service (call center) side of it, and I’m in e-commerce fulfillment. She’ll be working from home while I get two weeks off. My area is gonna have a skeleton crew of a certain rank and higher, which I don’t fall into. But they’re going to pay us our full 40-hour pay. Not sure what this adds to the conversation, but hell, who doesn’t like updates these days?
They sell the disposable plastic valve for $11,000 each. Sure, I get the whole concept of medical R&D and certification costs, and recouping said costs, but they ran out of inventory and couldn't make them fast enough. the volunteers make them for about $1 each, and the original article had 10 people being on ventilators only because of the $1 option. Yeah, I'm not sure that lawsuit is going to work out well for them.
Well not a lawsuit yet, just threatening it. Regardless, I don't think the negative PR even from those actions is gonna gain them many customers in the future. Might even lose a few of them. Or all.
Now recommending to not take ibuprofen if you have symptoms. https://www.sciencealert.com/who-recommends-to-avoid-taking-ibuprofen-for-covid-19-symptoms
Nevada just closed all the casinos. All gaming machines state wide shut off at midnight. My entire office is now working from home. Except me. I have the office to myself. Predictably, Crazy is freaking out...I have to quit my job or move. I'm pretty sure there's a law somewhere that says you can't do that.
Makes sense because the receptors it uses to infect lung cells are also in the kidneys. Take acetaminophen instead.
