    Blew up a whole lot of pyrotechnics last night, it took four of us half an hour to light them all with no pauses. Probably the best "homeade" show I've seen in these parts.

    However, you guys in the U-S-of-A know how to party with fireworks. As in "declare war on a small country"-style personal arsenals. Like when I went through Indiana. JESUS. Just plain warehouse-sized places full of these things that could punch a hole through a pick-up. They're EVERYWHERE, and CHEAP in America. Up here they suck and they're expensive. Maybe they're afraid we'll set all our wilderness on fire.

    This is something I have thought about way too often, so I am finally going to ask: Am I seriously the only person on here who lives in New York City? That just seems statistically impossible. I know Mr. Cowbell is moving here, but besides that I cant think of anyone.

    Just curious.

    Yeah, I just moved from there, so I'm there pretty often too. However, unlike Ballsack, I almost never take my helicoptor.

    Our county really is too dry too, but you can get "safe and sane" (ground fountain and snakes) in one town that has a large population of Mexicans. They figured out years ago that there would be massive amounts of mortars and bottle rockets anyway, so they would just provide safer alternatives.

    Doesn't work.

    They now inspect anyone going to the beach in the county for fireworks and booze too.

    So people go at night, and bury their fireworks and kegs, and mark them and then they have them the next day. I saw one person who had the keg buried, but the tap was sticking out of the sand that they covered when the police went by.

    I like that they still launch their fireworks, as I face the beach and can see them.

    This may sound like a really fucking silly question, but I have to ask...

    Is Canada really THAT fucking awesome? I want to check out (oot?) Toronto really bad. I'm trying to see where I should put it on my "list of cities I really need to check out." Someone told me about hot girls and laid back attitudes, but I seem skeptical. Someone told me the same shit about Rome and all I found was shit on the streets and hairy gypsies.

    Canada - Yea or Nay?

    Decidedly yea, but I'm biased. My entire paternal family are from western Canada, and my brother has lived in T.O. his whole life. Technically speaking, I'm a citizen, albeit one who exercises that fairly rarely.

    I've been just about everywhere in Canada, and I think Canada is great if you don't expect too much from it. It would be a mistake to look at Canada similarly to Rome. While it's a different country, it's only a different culture to a very limited extent. Sure, it's a bit different from the US in some ways (milk in bags), but no more so than different regions in the U.S. are from one another. The culture shock from Chicago to Toronto is a great deal less than from Chicago to New Orleans, for example.

    Also, Public Service Announcement: the women's beach volleyball world championships are on NBC this afternoon. Booty booty booty booty rockin' errywhere.

    I have a similar question about New York City. Is it really that great? Everything I hear about the place sounds terrible (absurdly high cost of living, traffic, crime, filth, bums, it snows there, etc.). It seems like it would a great place to visit, but I would never want to live there.

    EDIT: Just to piss of Nettdata, I'll give y'all the report on my brother-in-law's rear brakes: Sure enough, the calipers were stuck, but he didn't have enough money for them right now, so we just replaced the pads and rotors. I told him that this was most assuredly NOT the best way to go, and warned him to keep his driving to a minimum, and at best, eliminate it entirely until proper repairs can be done.
    The job itself wasn't that bad; everything was rusted up pretty bad because he lived in Buffalo (see what I said about New York?). One of the caliper bolts broke off and I had to heat it up with a torch to get it out, but that was about it.

    ... 'the fuck is this shit?

    Uh uh, we ain't having this. THIS FOREIGN OPPRESSION WILL. NOT. STAND.

    But on that note, The Wife is about to make me what sounds like the greatest Mexican sandwich ever: Tortas! Beaten thin and italian breadcrumb battered panfried pork cutlets, grilled butterflied hotdogs and ham and chorizo, melted havarti cheese, avocado and tomatoes, and topped with a fried egg, served on a soft toasted Mexican roll.

    Its small things like Mexican food that makes 'Merica great, and you abominable snow-people up north can't have any! God Bless America! (cooking thread pictures to come)

    Yes, it is.

    The cost of living actually isn't that high, though the rents are. Restaurants and such are significantly cheaper than a city like London.

    Don't drive.

    Crime isn't as big of an issue as you might think. Just lock your door and try to be relatively aware of your surroundings.

    Filth = character!

    Bums = double character!!

    Some people like snow. I happen not to much care for it, plus the snow gets dirty within 5 hours. Point to the Bandit.

    In the end though, New York has something for everyone. It has good, cheap restaurants in every genre. It has every type of show and museum. Every kind of store and club. It has all the downsides of millions of people living in super close proximity -- but it also has all of the upsides.

    Imho, it's the best city for walking in the United States, and it's not even close.

    So we are over in Stanford baby sitting my father in law and making sure he is taking all his meds. He is in a hotel near the transplant center, and apparently they require that the room be kept very cold to make sure to make it harder for bacteria, viruses and fungi spores to survive. It is cold as fucking balls in here. There are two window AC units keeping the place cold as hell.

    Nom's right on the cost of living. The rent too damn high, but other costs aren't likewise inflated. You can always find deals (happy hours, food discounts, etc) if you want to do things on the cheap, but there's also so much entertainment, it's easy to spend money.

    Crime is incredibly low over the vast majority of the city. Basically, there's witnesses everywhere. Someone is more likely to try to con you than try to rob you.

    Well, I think salaries are generally a little higher to compensate. Your best bet is moving to an outer borough, or JC, or Hoboken or something, all of which are pretty close. You can also get a roommate or something.

    You're not going to get as much bang for your buck, but you can find somewhere to live.

    I ask this partly in jest, but guys like carrymehome can vouch: are the rents as bad in New York as they are in Fort McMurray?

    Fort Mac, for all you yanks not in the know, is a northern Alberta wasteland that has nothing going for it except one small thing: oil. Google "rental property Fort McMurray." The cheapest property you'll get is a single bedroom apartment going for around $2600/mo (before utilities). If you'd like to purchase a house, not a thing in the city lists for under $400,000. And needless to say...these are the cheapest things on the block, so you can imagine the quality.

    I can't imagine NY being much worse.
