At the risk of jinxing myself for today, I’m honestly floored I’ve gotten maybe 3-4, which were all worded politely, and easy enough to reply STOP with. Last election cycle when I got a ton, if it was a candidate I didn’t agree with, I would engage long enough to get a person responding, then ask them why the hell they were bothering me about a POS person and don’t they feel morally wrong for doing so, fuck off etc. Pretty sure that got me removed from a lot of lists.
I've been getting a few robo-texts a week from Greg Abbott's campaign; I've been responding with "FUCK GREG ABBOTT. "
…but why are you so fucking racist?!? I’ve been getting a lot of the typed-up letters from some rando local who gives me their life story and then explains why so-and-so would make the best clerk for the public power district. I’m not even on that grid.
Not so sure on self-checkout for liquor sales, but I plan to vote YES on this one and here's why: they're already out there driving, for work or school or just daily errands. Lack of licensing doesn't stop them from doing what's necessary to live and survive. I'd rather they have documentation than not. What they really should do is quit dicking people around and give these law abiding tax payers the Resident status they need to get their own damn license.
I mean... Not saying you're wrong but they ain't exactly abiding the law. You know the whole here illegally thing.
Yeah yeah I know. But if coming here to work, pay taxes, and contribute is the only crime they're guilty of, they get a pass from me.
Yeah. This is all just bullshit because no one wants to deal with the actual immigration issues and I’m not supporting any of it until that gets addressed.
Anytime I hear about the next "pathway to citizenship"...man fuck y'all. Playing with people's lives.
There are signs, mailers and annual fundraisers here for a mayor and councilmen who run unopposed. I’ve yet to receive a satisfactory explanation. Speaking of councilman, I was being actively recruited for the land use board after one person decided to run for councilman instead. These are all people I know fairly well and am friendly with, and I am more than qualified with the background I have. But as soon as they found out I was a registered Democrat I was dropped from consideration.
If they're here illegally, I don't think they're paying taxes. They are paying sales tax, though, not the taxes that support licensing, healthcare, half the school budgets, etc. That's one reason I was a fan of the national sales tax or flat tax to replace income tax.
They are definitely paying taxes if they work. Those loopholes were never closed. They pay into stuff like social security, and never draw from it, due to...well, their immigration status It's one of the things that fueled the early aughts boom: folks coming over, working, building houses cheap as hell, etc. And then bouncing back to their village to retire on their nest egg. The issue is those villages aren't really livable, and the folks coming over now are fleeing gang violence, climate change induced starvation, etc. They can't or won't go back.
which is why I view most of them as refugees rather than immigrants. Of those I know who came here from Mexico and Central/South America, all of them still have love for their home countries and try to go back and visit when possible. But it's just not always feasible with the violence. Want to find someone who's really patriotic and loves the US? Go ask someone who had to flee their home country because their government failed and they were worried about getting killed in the streets or at home.
That distinction is crucial for us as a host country, but irrelevant to them or their survival. Therein lies the difference: a refugee is truly in need, an immigrants needs are distinct and not usually as substantial.
I know you're saying this sarcastically, and I understand why. Both parties have been screaming this for years. But, the Republican party has a large contingent of nut jobs running for state and federal positions. If we get a red wave the oldest democracy in the world is done in a few years.
"This is the most important election" is like "this is the most important drive to not be drunk." It's always true because if you fuck it up once there might not be a next time.
You’d think the Democrats would have fielded better candidates if that were the case. You know, if democracy itself is on the ballot. But who know? They might still keep both houses.
Why can't voters ever take responsibility? The Republicans put up a mentally ill violent criminal who would lose a battle of wits to a particularly slow rock; if someone votes for him because the Democrat didn't gargle their balls while simultaneously paying off their mortgage for them, that's not the Democrat's fault, that's the voter's fault.
It’s not the voters’ fault the DNC can’t figure out that the general public cares more about crime and the economy than the abortion they’re probably never going to need.
