This is pretty damning for the GOP credibility, right? Like...if McCarthy wins (or whomever), how would anyone believe they could corral their members to make a deal? And I don't fully understand the objections to McCarthy other than the facts (his record, relationship with Trump, history, general sliminess, etc.), but that's no different than any other GOP leader. I suppose my overarching question is why is this level of incompetence, intolerance and general embarassment the norm with the GOP these days? I get the fuckery during the Trump administration, and some of that may be lingering in terms of people elected off of the election lies or Q-tards, etc. But, are there that many hard-liners who can't see any benefit in compromise? I heard one hilarious conspiracy theory that the Q folks want to elect Trump, so he can "depose" Biden and Harris, because that's how this all works. Someone was clearly eating crayons in social studies far into high school.
I would love to know how QAnon still exists at this point. They’ve already reached laughingstock lunacy levels of Jonestown and Heaven’s Gate.
They just don't want McCarthy. He's literally given them everything they've asked for, but the people voting against him don't want him to be the speaker and they have the votes to stop it. This will go on until he either withdraws his nomination and they rally around someone else or some of them defect over to Jefferies or another Dem to end this clown show. The objections to McCarthy is exactly what is happening with the votes right now. He's not a leader of the party, he's just hungry to be seen as the Speaker. It's like being the director of a company and thinking because a VP spot is open you should be the one who gets it because you are entitled to it because of your standing currently. He doesn't stand for anything, he's seen as weak, unqualified, another person who will do whatever other people tell him to do as long as it makes him look good.
It looks EVEN WORSE to adjourn for the day then it does to just keep trying to vote. It basically is an admittance you can't and aren't willing to get anything done. Optics are very bad, even for the GOP who care almost zero about optics. They would adjourn for the entire weekend as well, basically delaying running the government from the house for a week.
Republicans are starting to go on Fox to float the idea of negotiating with Democrats to go around the 20 never-Kevins. Looks like they're softening the ground to offer things like improved committee ratios, rules around subpoenas, etc. Remains to be seen if they can make an offer sweet enough for the Democrats to accept.
Boebert went on and suggested nominating Trump as Speaker. That, I would actually love to see... because the dude would have to actually show up to work, and it would be a gong show.
And hopefully take them at their word. There is literally nothing in place that can have the gop offer nice concessions and then just take it back once they elect a speaker. There’s not an ounce of good faith left in that party that would make me think they would actually keep that promise.
This isn't funny anymore. While we all have our chuckles at the GOP snake eating itself, *Congress* as an institution has effectively ceased to be. Holy shit if some dire national crisis should pick this moment to go off.
