It is a weird situation where he can buy literally anything in Russia, but can't so much as visit the Eiffel Tower, which even our fattest and least cultured poverty-Americans can do.

Hell, even Hitler visited the Eiffel Tower.

The French did the most passive-aggressively French thing imaginable and cut the elevator cables so he couldn't go up.

    • They will actually mention that at the Eiffel Tower as if it were a badass move, and not just a pathetic footnote on a country handing itself over.

I just read the trump indictment. Holy shit. Holy fucking shit. It's written in plain English. I don't have high standards for the dude, but he was dumber than I thought possible.

This is a thing that was said, from a person who once ran an entire country:

was talking to a family member last night who is a practicing attorney for over 40 years now. We both agree 1) he's going to jail for a long time, to admittedly 20 years might as well be a life sentence for donny boy; 2) the most effective defense might actually be that he's mentally incompetent to stand trial.

He should, yeah. But this system is just so hesitant to punish one of its own.

    Plea deal, no question.

The things he knows can do tremendous damage to American interests, and there is simply no way to effectively gag him. The question is what could the deal involve for the DOJ....If he doesn't win re-election and pardon himself.

The other question is how many and to what degree does his support sour on him. He hasn't improved his base since 2020, and the crowd influenced by evidence is growing...against him.

The best case scenario is a guilty verdict results in a sort of apolitical exile, a la Napoleon, and a promise to not peek too deeply into how his family got wildly richer during his presidency. If his base continues to decline, and he begins to understand he will lose the 2024 election, this kind of deal may be palatable.

If his base isn't swayed, the plea deal for this may be subverted by the far more serious charges for the Jan 6. Shit. Garland may be content to wait until after the election on all of this, and depending on how shitty and uncooperative Trump and his team...let that influence what DOJ seeks for sentencing. Plea deal for this in exchange for leniency for Jan 6 is probably the bargain I'd aim for.

Are those pesky pool cleaners at it again? First they drain the pool into the resort’s computers, now this.

    https://slate.com/news-and-politics...uments-case-indictment-dangers-questions.html

I'm enjoying the technical aspects of the case itself. For example: "under the Classified Information Procedures Act, there is a framework that Congress set up to deal with that very tension, and it is to allow the prosecutors to protect some of the information by allowing them to do a summary of the content of the documents. That’s one version of it.

But if a judge says, “no, I’m sorry, that would not provide the defendant with proper rights, because they can’t be convicted on the basis of secret information,” you have to give up the entire document so the jury sees it and the public sees it, or something like that. It’s where [the judge] can draw the line on that [the judge] has enormous discretion."

And...yeah, plea deal: "David Petraeus, Sandy Berger, John Deutch. Guilty. Guilty, guilty. Pled guilty. And then because of that pleading, they get no jail time. John Deutch got a pardon as well. This defendant isn’t gonna plead guilty."

I could even see a Biden pardon as part of his victory lap, and the more I think about it, that's the nail in the Trump coffin: "why would Biden pardon him, unless...(gasp) THEY'RE IN CAHOOTS TOGETHER!" Trump will forever be tied to Biden anyway, might as well let that connection drag them both to hell.

If you've seen the latest Grand Tour where they "liberated" the Nigel Mansel wax figure from Poland, I can only wish someone would do something similar with Trump's figure.
