Fuck me for making a joke, I guess. And don't you crackers forget it. Seriously though, Trump's main PAC is practically broke. You just know someone is cashing out their retirement or selling their possessions just to pay his legal fees and I feel almost bad for them.
He amassed a $250m war chest and hasn't stop fundraising. Also, I'd assume some of the friends he made rich as fuck during COVID have some slabs of cash they will put down if he asks nicely. His main PAC isn't his only one, nor is it the only source of funding...it's just the darkest, and I'd burn through that on the lawyers first. Gotta start that "statute of limitations" clock as soon as possible! The point is he has access to a LOT more capital than anyone he's running against. Even if Trump has to leverage his actual real estate holdings, the fuck is he gonna do? He loses, he goes to jail or it all goes up in smoke anyway. He will burn through his own money if he has to, and thus far....I don't think he has.
Im ignorant of how PACs work but I thought there were super strict rules on how the money was handled? Never figured he could just use it as a lawyer slush fund.
Lol. Hell no there's not. Dark money PAC's are how companies can fund politicians without being seen as the equivalent of a NASCAR sponsor. Who's telling you they are super strict? Also...Trump can raise money for his legal defense fund and doesn't have to put it through any sort of political campaign scrutiny. I remember seeing mailers that would seem like he did exactly that. That's the thing: ALL of his money can be poured into this, the tiny sliver that has to conform to campaign finance laws is the piece I'd spend first, to see if you have to spend your own or if the donors will come onboard when they see you're the candidate.
Speaking of campaign funding, pretty impressive how DeSantis has blown his substantial fundraising. He's shit with small dollar donors, but he got a lot of big money donations back when people thought he was the Trump successor. He's gotten nothing for it, cause he's such a shit campaigner.
My understanding is that PACs can spend any money they want for a candidate in any way they want, but the only restriction is that it can't be at the direction of the candidate, or in collusion with the candidate. Colbert did a great bit where he created one.
I think that John Oliver made one as part of a segment on Last Week Tonight. The last I heard about it was that Oliver said that the money was spent. And then he said nothing else because he didn't have to.
Am I the only one disappointed to see Desantis bombing so bady? I was really hoping to see a Trump/ Desantis shit-fight, but unless Trump drops dead some time soon, Meatball Ron doesn't stand a chance.
I was here for the fight as well. Though I don't think Desantis's ego is going away anytime soon so there will still be some monkey shit being thrown around
Maybe Im confusing it with campaign violations. Seems like everyone ends up getting busted for using campaign funds for personal expenses. AoC had like 20k used for this, Ilhan Omar paid her brother 12k that, etc.
DeSantis might be done for good. He's termed out of the Florida Governorship, he's pissed off the Trump folks by daring to challenge their creepy god, and he's made a thorough enemy of anyone even remotely liberal leaning. What's his move? Senator from Florida? Over Rubio or Scott?
They probably don't have the giant PACs presidents get. I bet the lower folk are more likely to use it and not have as many ways to hide it.
Just saw the most non-breaking news headline ever. "BREAKING NEWS- PRES TRUMP PLEADS NOT GUILTY" Well no shit.
that’s the fun part right? He’s run out of moves so he’s gonna go nuclear, scorched earth, nothing to lose. I’m stocking up on popcorn right now
I think he ends on a whimper. Like, he is already saying stupid shit like "my first day as president, I'll start slitting throats" or whatever, but who's paying attention? He's increasingly sounding like a middle school edge lord, with all the probability of becoming president that entails. DeSantis will keep talking, but the listeners will simply stop.
